I'd say that Directory Opus, in one incarnation or another, just might be the oldest of major computer programs around that is still available today.

Can anyone think of another program that's been around as long, and still in use?

Well apart from all of the stuff that has its origins from Unix and Linux... one program some may remember (in one variation or another) was the file manager Xtree (Gold/Pro etc) from Xtree Software - there is Ztree http://www.ztree.com which is still actively developed and supported.

I'm not too sure if I would call Ztree a major program, BuBBy.... It is a program, true enough, but a major program, that is well known? Don't know....

But I should have specified that I did mean programs that developed into Windows environment usage..

  4. Caligari trueSpace... I had it on my Amigas, and it is still being used by game makers. I still have it for PC, but I think you can get a free download (v. 3.2)here:

    Home page of (v.5.2)

still using the same trike after all these years! :))))
I'm going to have to check this out closer as it is being used with Dogwaffle and 3D Paint.

Well I don't think you will find many people of that vintage who would deny that XTree wasn't "a major computer program" - and inspiration of many tree based file managers that followed - it (Ztree) is still used today, completely rewritten, updated and supported (very active forums) but definitely a 100% Win32 program (doesn't run under DOS, but can handle Vista).

Arguably XTree is the granddaddy of Directory Opus & Total Commander, and perhaps the evil twin of Norton Commander. Even Windows Explorer has aspects that were introduced back with the first release of Xtree for DOS.

(Thinking ZTree could be a candidate for GOTD) ;)

  6. Some would say this defacement shouldn't be allowed - But secretly I think it is just so cool. Mod an old CBM 3032 (complete with dead spiders) into a working (reasonably modern) PC. At least if your house ever got burgled, they would never think to steal that "old heavy piece of junk".

(They definitely don't make keyboards like that anymore)

@ Mr. B Well I don't think you will find many people of that vintage who would deny that XTree wasn't "a major computer program"

Well, again, my meaning was not clear. What I originally meant to ask was what program, today is still around, and is a major program.

I agree that XTree was great in it's day, but I believe it's time of being ranked a major program in use now, is past....

Then again, it's probably my own bias, I never really liked it even back then... :-)

  9. Now THAT is art - no doubt somebody has already seen this and is planning some cheap knockoff to sell in furniture shops. I know too often my computer area just looks like a messy eyesore - but with a setup like that - it could be messy antique eyesore. (I need a computer station similar to the beds on "the Goodies" - just flip everything up into the wall.

Have a look at the custom keyboards at http://www.datamancer.net/keyboards/keyboards.htm

Look at the 'The von Slatt Original'. I was watching the prototype that was auctioned on eBay about 2 months ago. It was a 9 day auction, and the final price was.............. $4,300.00 !!

You've got to have more money than {fill in the blank} to spend that much for a keyboard!

That wouldn't really be modding it. You'd be using it to mod a PC.

  13. Oh, we have a favorite blog in common then... yep, saw the mouse, but the keyboards are so awesome...yes, first heard about them ages ago, but guess who just found an old unwanted Remington typewriter today? That would be me, and Bubbys' post sounded like an omen, so who knows, I may attempt my first mod project. I have lots of found objects, gears and assorted stuff. Also learning about brass etching. The problem is, I need clones to get all that interests me done:)))
