Why complain (every day) ?

(61 posts)

  1. “To all those complaining:
Stop complaining already. If you don’t like the games offered here, wait until the next day’s offer or go somewhere else.”

How many days have “all those complaining” had to wait for something besides, as vilulf put it, “lame brick busters, match three’s, and 25 year old game concepts”? Well over a month and a half.

“So what if these games are not the type you like, they are given away for FREE. You didn’t pay for anything. You don’t really expect to get any major, name-brand, hard-core games here do you?”

No, but we’d like to see some shooters for a change. “Complainers” don’t care that they’re not paying for what they get - they don’t like that there hasn’t been anything but “games [that] are not the type [that they] like”.

This is an "argument" or "point of view" that seems to resurface on a fairly regular basis.

Usually it is in relation to the "game giveaways".

While I agree it is fair to express disappointment - perhaps the game giveaways are not meeting personal expectations of what some feel SHOULD be offered.

Rarely does anyone suggest titles or alternatives that they would enjoy (and that the developers would likely be willing to make available to the site).

If there are more of one game type - it is probably due to the game developers saying "yes" more often. If the developers for "other game types" say "no" then GGOTD cannot put them on the site.

Surely shooting GGOTD is shooting the messenger? People say it's not the GOTD team they are "upset" at... well who are the complaints targeted towards, then? Perhaps they are upset at the game companies (brick busters, match threes etc) that keep saying "yes". That makes sense?!?!

Next time you go grocery shopping - and that lady in the produce department with the free samples of apple slices to try, offers you some - hold back on complaining to her.

Sure, you have been shopping there for months, and it is always healthy stuff - but you feel it is about time she started handing out free chocolate and ice cream. Sure if she had it to hand out - I'm sure she would be happy to.

While you don't approve of the apples - remember she isn't a vending machine. If you don't like it - that's bad luck. You're not paying for the healthy freebies - and passing them by and going without - isn't costing you anything either.

And it's not like she has a freezer full of ice cream - but only handing out apples, because she knows everyone wants the ice cream.

One day you will find she does have ice cream. And then back to the apples. And people will complain that the free ice cream was only for one day (should be several times a week).

Sure, everyone wants something cheaper... and then they want it for free. Once it's free... they want it bigger, better and faster. And then they want more of them.

So if a giveaway isn't "for you"... you don't need it, want it, understand it - then forget it. There are no promises or guarantees, except another will be offered tomorrow... and it will be free.

Feel free to comment - but some thought would be appreciated in the answers.

I understand. At least I'm not degrading games based on their genres. I wish that people would complain more about quality and content than about genre. Read some of the comments for the last few DoubleGames "games" - they're exactly what I'm talking about.

Bear in mind that I, as the one who wrote the quoted comment, actually have made a list of "titles or alternatives that [I] would enjoy". Enjoy:

  3. Hi there. .My understanding of what you are doing here is pretty much for testing
new programs and giving usable feedback. The program developers use the comments
to understand how new users react and to find out what they like and do not like
as well as looking for positive suggestions on how they might improve their program.
As we have actually seen in the past, some of them are right on top of it and have
actually updated with improvements while the program was here being tested.
I see all kinds of comments that are not useful to the program developers or the
members and most of the time they have apparently not even tried the programs.
I think some members think that you are to try and please them, but that is not
easy to do when you can not just pick what you want us to test as you have stated.
I think it is really cool that you give people a chance to test new programs if they
are interested in the program and see no problem with them suggesting ones that they
would like to test. But it is sad that we all are subjected to the whiners here.
Too bad you couldn't have a vote count for the rest of us to remove unwanted and
unproductive comments...Where is the trap door lol

  4. @ Lockett - Yes, I read your list - and I thank you for that. It's only armed with such a list that there is any possibility that the Giveaway team can contact the people who can make different games on this site a possibility. It seems everyone can produce a list of what they dislike - but are unable to produce examples they have tried and consider to be "good".

There was one phrase that was mentioned about giveaway software and whether it was likely. The project has to be able to "afford" a game too - remember the Giveawayoftheday project team does pay for the software. This is one reason we do not see premiere release titles from the likes of Adobe, Microsoft, Electronic Arts or Activision. The other obvious reason is the huge (1GB+) download sizes.

  5. Hi hooty & welcome to the forums :)

Feedback (of whatever type) is something developers appreciate, because it lets you know where you are hitting and where you are missing. Also new ideas, features and improvements often come from user feedback.

Some of the feedback is pointless (ie. "I don't like this car because it isn't a truck" - when there was never any intent or claim to be "a truck").

So the nature of feedback is not really "beta testing" - in fact if there are any major bugs, it can be a major scandal (but obviously showcasing software that actually works without crashing, is a big plus for the developer).

The point as I see it is much like the "free sample person" in the shops. You get a taste, some things you like and add to your shopping list next week. You might even tell some friends about it. You don't go there for a lifetime supply of apple slices (I hate apples but you don't hear me complain - because they're free).

The software giveaway is a "free install" of a program. If you like it - you can choose to purchase the software. Then you always have the latest and greatest - all the new features and bug fixes. If you don't use it as much and don't see it as important - you might just hang onto the giveaway version. If you lose or remove it, then it's gone. You don't get any support or updates so the people who pay for it get the newer/better/fixed version.

So while it all seems a big plus on the users side of the equation - from the developers point of view - they would also like lots of (good) word-of-mouth, maybe some rave blogging, new customers, all users buying their software, and an early retirement somewhere nice.

Telling people about freeware alternatives (hopefully alternatives that are good... not just free) is useful and people appreciate this, especially if they come back a month later and want a program to do the same thing - but don't fancy running feature or time limited shareware. Hopefully commercial developers should be able to use best of breed freeware as their starting quality benchmark. (as a rule - software I purchase - should be better than "the free stuff")

As far as being "subjected to the whiners" - if we got rid of them, new whiners would appear claiming some evil censorship conspiracy. (I love the confusion in users heads when they read their post - "Why do my comments always get deleted and never appear on the site". From the same breed of stock as "Commenter #31" who began with "First Post!! YAY YIPPEE Look at Me... No pants!"

I did suggest the voting (re: the trapdoor) and if the comment useful vote dropped to maybe -30, we could release poison gas from that persons keyboard, but GOTD don't have enough staff to make it practical to implement.

I loved your grocery store analogy it is very appropriate when applied to both GOTD sites.
I’ve been logging onto both sites and do get a bit tired of the same complaints, many times from the same users, over and over again, but I have to admit that many of them make me smile.
I’m not sure what people expect form these sites, some great games and programs have been given away here yet people quickly forget that fact as soon as something is posted that they don’t personally like.
I guess it’s just human nature that once you’re given something for free you automatically think that you should be given something bigger and better the next time.

I've noticed the "is this comment helpful" vote is missing lately. I don't even look at the comments unless they are there. I scroll until I see whiterabbit's review or click the link to bladed thoth. Whiners just waste my time. Voting wastes my time, too, but it helps others skip the big no comments so they don't waste their time.

Why do the whiners waste time to comment anyway? I don't understand this. If it is a genre you don't like, there will be another game tomorrow.

I love games. I was a member of RealArcade for 3 years, so I racked up plenty of games. Now I've found GGAoTD and MostFun games and now I'm needing a new hard drive ;) Not to mention the MMORPG's I love that are so massive I know they will never make it to GGAoTD. One that is possible if it can find a permanent server is Mythic's original called MageStorm. That one is small enough and hasn't been updated in years anyway. It was so enjoyable, I would stop my subscription for a month or two and always come back. My kids even played it when they were old enough to read "help, I'm being slaughtered" lol. They still ask me to do a search for it every once in a while to see if it's come back. (It has done that at least 3 times that I know of.)

Well, here's to hoping and waiting.

couldn't have said it better myself Bubby. Thank you for finally saying what I think every day. And especially thanks to GAOTD for offering this service. If I don't like the game, I just delete it. Why can't the whiners just try that instead of wasting our time with their kvetchin!

therosey1: I'm with you; if I don't like the game or software, it goes. But I think a lot of the whiners merely look at the description and maybe the screenshots then they post their tiresome complaints. I really doubt that they even download and try the software or games. That is doing nothing for the rest of us who want to read what the software/game will do or how it plays. Instead we have to scan through their comments looking for the ones that really mean something. That is the most annoying part of my day!
I'll stop my complaining now. ;>

BuBBy, thanks for posting that. Hopefully some of them will actually read it.

    Happy New Year to All!

I just had an idea. What if GGAOTD & GAOTD started a subscription fee with a paid member only sign on -- a small annual fee that is. If the nay-sayers won't pay, we won't have to read all their garbage! Just a passing thought. Don't shoot me.

  11. I made myself a bet yesterday when I saw the new SS being offered, it was based on the word "crap". Of course I won my bet. Sad. To be honest, I'm not a huge SS fan, but now that I've tried a few, I sure have appreciated the ones that I've kept. The Santa's home SS was an enormous hit at Christmas with my whole family. It was wonderful to have running in the background while I wrapped the last of the packages. This last one was very nice with the snow as the star. Up until GAOTD, I was very distrustful of game sites and screen saver sites. Now I know more about them, I feel better about trying a few demos at a few trusted sites(such as Alawar). I feel like I've got an embarrassment of riches with all the games I can share with my grandkids. I don't mind at all that there are a preponderance of family games being offered here. For years there has been plenty of FPS/RPG's and the like being offered to the teen and young adult (male) audience, it is so cool to have a nice selection of games for the rest of the family.
I had to laugh when I read the comments about "Gamers".....my sons are Gamers, they buy the newest big games and are alpha and beta testers for online games... they've been playing since they were babies and they are very good. Here is why I had to laugh, they are true gamers but they appreciate the games here, they sit down and play with their kids on my computer(which they built and has handled everything offered except Snake Time(which I tore apart and got working)), Ozzy Bubble was a big hit, Turtix and Magic Ball3 were too. Granted they could get to the levels that took me hours to get to in 20 minutes or so, but they weren't putting the games down at all. They were just genuinely pleased that I had found games I like to play, and thought the games themselves to be fun. These are the same guys that bought Halo3 and ripped through it in one sitting, in a matter of hours.
To me, it would just make sense that if a person didn't like what they were finding here, they would just move along and find a place that was giving away the kind of games or software that they did like,(Good Luck!)instead of making fools of themselves by being rude and hateful to the people that offer them and the people that are happy to accept what is being offered. Better still, go learn to program, fine tune those art, writing and music skills, put together a team that can work together well, get that dream game of yours developed and bring your baby here and let us have a go at it:))))
I'm not offended by people that have something negative to say in a positive way. If a game doesn't play well, I like to know it just isn't me that is having trouble with it, if an app is buggy as all get out, I really want to know before I put something on my machine that is going to cause me a lot of grief. If there is something that does better, great, I'm happy to take a look at it too. If you are trying to warn people who might not be very experienced with computers about software use that can destroy an operating system, I applaud your efforts. If you are trying to tell the developers what would make their game/app more appealing to you, great. (I am doubly impressed when developers try to implement those suggestions) But...I don't care if you think this offering is stupid and you are going to pass, (well duh!!!)
For the most part I do really like reading the comments, it is half of the appeal of coming here every day, there is always something to learn.

The grocery store analogy is great, but incomplete.

The lady is there every day, for certain. She is giving away ... SOMETHING ... every day. Some days apple slices, some days raisins.

Unfortunately, on way too many days, she stands there with the exact same smile she uses when she has apple slices while she hands out ... rancid pig fat disguised as apple slices.

Unsuspecting people bite into the mock fruit, expecting sweet juiciness and a refreshing moment. But on way too many days (in fact more days than not) the consumer who has come to her enticed by her sweet smile and the apple slice appearance are met with the foul taste of rancid pig fat. They get indigestion, sometimes really badly.

But, the lady's smile doesn't change. When people begin asking why she's handing out rancid pig fat disguised as apple slices, she starts bitching that the pig fat is, after all, free. She goes on to make ridiculous arguments that if you don't like rancid pig fat disguised as apple slices, then don't eat them. She keeps trying to chase away the people who tried the fake fruit and found rancid pig fat with ridiculous statements about them being "free", and "can you do better". Like it is the customer's job to cut the apple slices up for her.

Her arguments are stupid, on the face of it, because they are all actually lies.

The real problem is not the people who found rancid pig fat instead of apple slices, it is her insistence on handing out the rancid pig fat while she pretends that it is really apple slices.

She needs to stop pretending that people will somehow know that she is actually handing out rancid pig fat and avoid eating the diguised garbage. She needs to stop telling those who've discovered rancid pig fat that they can't call them as they see them, or try to warn others not to try the apple slices that are actually bits of disgusting rancid pig fat in disguise.

Perhaps her real goal is actually distributing rancid pig fat, she's probably in cahoots with the rancid pig fat makers and it is part of her plan to trick people into taking the rancid pig fat so they WILL get indigestion from it. Maybe part of the plan is to not only get innocent people to take the rancid pig fat, but even take enough of it so that thier arteries clog and thier systems become unstable and maybe even shut down, or burn out.

    Hmm....

That WOULD explain the inordinate amount of effort expended on making those who've been warning others about the rancid pig fat seem like they are whining. It would explain why she makes so much effort trying to get people to buy into the nonsense that somehow, despite her attempts at packaging and presenting the rancid pig fat as apple slices that somehow innocent people should simply know that so much of the time she is not handing out actual apple slices, or even mere raisins, and should simply know to avoid the cleverly disguised rancid pig fat.

Until she stops handing out rancid pig fat (some of the disguised bits even have pieces of glass embeded in them) using the stale rubrik, "don't complain, it is FREE rancid pig fat disguised as apple slices, after all.", it is important that those who know the difference between actual pices of fruit and disguised rancid pig fat continue to warn others that they are about to bite into, not apple slices or raisins, but rancid pig fat that sometimes have bits of broken glass.

Then at least the people standing around waiting for fruit slices will not be tricked into swallowing rancid pig fat or little shards of broken glass.

NOW the grocery store analogy is complete ... AND way more accurate.

Hempman, that is a faulty analogy. The lady is indeed handing out apple slices. They are merely different varieties for you to try and then decide whether or not you like a particular flavor. There is no pretense of being something else.
I find about 1 game a week I like. Right on, GGOTD!!

  15. I say: a HUGE BIG ENORMOUS THANKS to GOTD!!!! I am often happy with what is offered, and ALWAYS very happy with the CHANCE to see if there is something I like here for FREE! I could otherwise never afford all these good programs.
I am always a little ashamed of being human, when I read all the complaints...
I hope you guys at GOTD will let it slide. The people who complain are just very short of love or something...
and 90% of your visitors wouldn't like to go without you for a day!

    Happy New Year Folks!

Freebird31, you are right. I check my email first thing every day for the letter from GGOTD hoping there is a game I will like. If there isn't, I wait until the next day. 1 good free game a week is great. I check the comments before downloading, esp whiterabbit.

  17. Well Hempman, it is my analogy and it is not about the deception of a cruel old lady who is knowingly trying to trick her customers into swallowing broken glass or rancid fat by making her offerings appear to be something else.

It is about people who repeatedly complain because they don't like what is being offered because they have no need for what is being offered, and want something else. They are not complaining about the program being a poor specimen or dangerous if swallowed on an empty stomach. They are complaining because the Giveaway team has already given them one of these before, they have the whole set, they don't even like these games/programs and it's about time the Giveaway team gave them what they want. ie "It's been three weeks and I still haven't got what I want."

Some Examples - video rippers/converters, screen savers, arkanoid and 3 in a row games.

Take a screen saver for example - nobody is going die from looking at a screen saver. Some users like them. Some do not. Some users feel the need to remind people each week that screen savers don't save screens anymore, or that you won't see the screen saver if you aren't in the room (brilliant logic there). It is like they are either justifying their dislike for the software or trying to convince other people that screen savers are really broken glass.

Translation: "GOTD, stop offering software I don't need. I want something else". (I am sick of apples. You should feed me ice cream instead)

Without a doubt there are many programs that are anything but "best of breed" examples of their genre. But there isn't some malicious intent to poison customers. No developer would put their software up for very public scrutiny to risk "traces of broken glass" - who would ever want to buy their software once the word got out?

I have seen some "powerful" - I hate that word ;) programs that even before the giveaway begins - I know it's going to be "one of those days" - with users toasting or breaking something. We have had everything from registry cleaners to anti-spyware and sandboxes, and I just know, with 100% certainty it's like handing a loaded gun to some users - and sure as heck - they are going to shoot themselves 6 times in each foot (stopping to reload between feet). Still, it's all a character building, learning experience.

Not all giveaways are intended/suited for all users. For the users who have no use for a giveaway - some are likely to complain that the software is "poor". The special purpose software could actually be very good, but either a lack of (the users) understanding, need, or effort - will have the software labeled a failure.

Personally I cringe a little - when people don't know what it does, don't really have a need for it - but will download and "have a play" anyway (it's free). It's at that point they should start checking for bullet holes in their feet. If there is any doubt - spent 15 minutes and do some research (the program descriptions rarely say enough). Most people expect some instructions when assembling a piece of furniture, or a new electrical appliance - BUT expect to be able to use any piece of software without any reading. And when it doesn't do what they think it should (15 minutes later) it gets uninstalled and posted as "terrible software".

It is possible to not like a program or have no requirement for it, and still consider the software to be good\high quality\well designed\easy to use\error free - but to comment on many of those criteria (which can be very helpful to developers), you may need to do some reading yourself.

Finally, I am not doing this speaking on the behalf of the "Giveaway Project Team". The moderators (such as myself) in this forum are volunteers. Users like yourself, except perhaps committing a few extra hours to this site (moderating comments and these forums), because we like what the GPT PTB (Giveaway Project Team, Powers That Be) are doing - and we really want to help see it succeed.

I DID NOT make this post because I heard GOTD was going to close because of complaints from users or because not enough people are saying "Thank You" (Have you ever sent an email to the support of a giveaway program you like, just to say thanks for the giveaway?). I am just concerned and tired that too often it seems some users are in a complaint rut and don't understand what the project is doing. Also if the quality of constructive criticism, suggestions, user testimonials is replaced with whinging about the GOTD software selection then that aspect which could be a drawcard for developers to offer software here, may become completely pointless.

  18. (Have you ever sent an email to the support of a giveaway program you like, just to say thanks for the giveaway?)

Yes, a number of times...and the emails I got back were super nice.
Cheer up Bubby, you do a great job, some of the crankiness is just par for the course this time of year. Though I have to admit there is a comment in the games section today that really makes my teeth hurt...Someone forgot that it's the WWW and even if it wasn't, it is just one of the most hideous remarks made in the comments, ever. I hope others understand that he speaks for himself and NOT for others from the same country.

    - and sure as heck - they are going to shoot themselves 6 times in each foot (stopping to reload between feet)*giggle*
Ok, you've got me laughing again!! Sorry, but the minute I see powerful and registry together in the same paragraph I know the Gods of Computers are going to send some of their kind to the Pearly Bill Gates in the Sky!

If commenter would say 'the apple slice has pig fat and glass shards today', I would give the commenter much more respect than if the commenter just said “more of the same apple slices”. Then, at least, I can decide for myself if I want pig fat and glass shards with my apple slices.
Help me to understand…is GGOTD there for our pleasure or our critique?
I love the anticipation of GGOTD email! If I don’t like the offer, I have been known to stay up late just to see what the next game is.
I do know of a ‘pleasure seeker’ that sez “if you go to Sam’s at the right time of day, you can get a whole lunch for free.” I know ur out there.

    VERY WELL said Mr. B
Thank you for taking the time to say out loud what most of us are thinking.
It is indeed very tiring to always have to go through all the posts from the whiners/complainers.
    It just wastes everybody's time!
By all means, give us feedback, if the game or s/w is not good, under performs, is poorly written, doesn't do what it's suppose to do, I want to know about it!!
That someone has no use for it or doesn't like it because it was given before, it's NOT constructive criticism and is of no use to anybody!!!

    I do agree w the "Trap-Door" concept. :-) HeeHeeHee...
And I also agree w haalam!
A small annual subscription fee would help clear up some of the mindless complaining!

This is by FAR!! the best website around, by FAR!! the nicest most friendly website around, by FAR!! the most helpful website around. And everything is free.
How can people find stuff to complain about, is beyond me.

Even if the GPT gives the same Apple Slices/Soup/Rancid Pig fat/Ice Cream/..., it's still better than anything around.

Gee, I hardly dwld either games or s/w (if I did, my HDs would be even fuller), and still I come everyday, and everyday I learn stuff, everyday someone gives us a list of nice or superior freeware, everyday I get an answer to a problem, everyday someone makes me laugh!
    Peace, Manu

I have a really big thing that I object to ... and as the posts are moderated it should not be the problem that it is ... and that is the profanity and crude talk. If one has to object to the game or program, can't you do it without using language that I do not want to be subjected to - let alone have the younger ones in my family exposed to.

Thanks GAOTD for all you do ... it is not my intention to make your job harder.

"I just had an idea. What if GGAOTD & GAOTD started a subscription fee with a paid member only sign on -- a small annual fee that is."

Well, that would completely destroy the concept of the site. Duh. If you have to pay for free software, then how is it free?

    >LeKanaw

"And everything is free. How can people find stuff to complain about, is beyond me."

Guess what - if something is free it changes nothing about it. People found plenty to complain about with the DoubleGames and Magnussoft...erm...applications("game" is too good a word).

    >JWartist

Ditto. How are they moderated, anyway? I see the "f word" and "s word" once in a while, and it makes me wonder why my comments take so long to get through if the standards are that low.

    Posted 11 months ago #
  23. I agree about the bad language or personal attacks appearing in the daily comments. It is quite possible that some might slip through. I try to proof read every single unmoderated comment. If you see something that shouldn't be there or maybe a broken or improper link - you can contact the GOTD team via the Contact Form on the front page, or send me a PM - with a link to the post, explaining why you feel it shouldn't be there.

If you have a problem with comments that are taking so long to appear - it's because we are also moderating the questions, the responses, discussions, the complaints etc.

If the comments section was just for comments on the giveaway software - it would be a lot easier to get an idea on what was good or bad about the software.

Perhaps everyone needs to adhere to the instruction:
Please comment only on the software here. If you have technical problems or suggestions on our project, please leave us a note in our forums.

Questions, Answers, Discussions, Tips and even complaints really belong here in these forums. And as a bonus - posting questions or responses is instantaneous - there is no hour long (or whatever) delay before your comments might appear on the site. With the additional people now in these forums - it is likely you may get a response to a question in a matter of minutes.

The daily giveaway comments section isn't the most efficient way to hold a discussion. That's why we have the discussion forums. :)

"Perhaps everyone needs to adhere to the instruction: Please comment only on the software here...complaints really belong here in these forums."

Why complain about software in the forums as opposed to the comments section?

"Just remember...one man's pig fat is another man's cracklin's. And one man's glass shards is another man's stained glass window."

Well said, but this site seems to be pandering to the "other man". I can't remember the last time that we had an action or strategy game here, for that matter. Oh, and the top five games on the top 10 list were...action/strategy games.

  26. Why complain about software in the forums as opposed to the comments section?

Because complaints (about program/game selection) are rarely about the giveaway program, and usually "suggestions on our project". The developer of a match-3 game or someone curious about the game is not helped by "not another xxxxx".

The complaint is as useful as "I don't like this car because it isn't a truck. I already have lots of free cars, start giving me trucks."

There is a section in the forums specifically for comments about the Giveaway project.

I can't remember the last time that we had an action or strategy game here, for that matter. Oh, and the top five games on the top 10 list were...action/strategy games.

The top 10 list should serve as a reminder of at least 5 popular action/strategy games - if you are having trouble remembering ;)

So more match-3 type game are offered by the developers here than action/strategy games. Is it possible this is because more action/strategy games aren't interested in using this style of promotion? As I said earlier, you are assuming that GOTD is sitting on a whole freezer of ice cream while only offering slices of apple - because they can see how much some people would like ice creams. Doesn't make sense.

What if 9 out of 10 "apple slice" suppliers said yes to GOTD, and only 1 out of 50 "ice cream" suppliers said yes. Does it make sense to expect "ice cream" every second day - because you prefer it to "apple" ?

  27. We had Christmas dinner at my mothers house where she and my sister had prepared a very large dinner (mom has 5 children and 14 grandchildren).

This year there was no coleslaw. So if I was to complain should I tell mother that because she always had coleslaw, we should always have it or should I complain about the 7-layer salad that was prepared instead?

  28. Was there any apple in the salad?

    Archangel:

I don't know the answer to yer question, but I bet I know what you actually did: You bowed your head for grace when she did, and you lapped up the 7-layer salad when she scooped it on yer plate, finishing with a polite "Thank you, Ma. Slaw or salad--It was wonderful because you are so wonderful." Or something kinda like that.

You got me there. I've got a few connections on some forums, I'll see if I can get us some action games.
