Came across new site in my wanderings...and a great new free app for looking at stars....Probably not right way to post, but I can take lessons if someone wants to teach me...lol...At least I'm trying and at my age that's a lot of trying!!

http://www.freedownloadaday.com/ Most of their files are still available with no time limit....
    And for whiterabbit's son... http://stellarium.sourceforge.net/
I tried it and really works well.
I printed out a few screen captures and went out back and sat back in old recliner and was able to see groups of stars I had never noticed before....Made me go to attic and dig out old telescope....lol....Hope this makes it to you....as I said most of this is new to me...posting and such so if I should be doing something wrong ...don't blast me just tell me and I will endeavor to learn better..

Hello, qb. Thanks very much for the information, and the links. You did fine, just fine for your first post! The only suggestion I would have for you is to post links to software sites in the sub-forum named Software Talks. You'll find it down at the bottom of the main forum page. The reason is, that the forum likes to keep subjects in the General Discussion section related to GAOTD projects.

Great first post. Now, about the other things you mentioned.... I'm in a guessing mood today, so I'll try to guess something about you, and you have to be completely honest with how close I come to being right, yes? OK, here I go...

You are close to 14 years old, you like sports, in fact you are or were a Quarterback recently. Hey, why stop there, I'll even guess that your jersey number is/was 78 .

Well, how good, or how bad did I do? :-)

  3. Great to see another pair of eyes looking for software, qb7894. Keep up the good work. A couple more helpful suggestions (not criticism!)...

Before I post links, I try to remember to run a quick search of the forums to see if my link's been recently offered by someone else. That way, redundancy is reduced, AND you can save some typing time. (someone recently pointed wabbit towards stellarium, which, btw, IS a great appl!) Of course, some are likely always either overlooking or forgetting about software posted here, so occasional reminders about the really great ones isn't a bad thing at all.

Something I wish more people would do is provide some color when posting a link. Doesn't have to be much, just a couple notes or observations. For instance, say someone refers others to that freedownload's site, specifically linking to their newest addition - JING. That's a nifty piece of software, but it requires Net 3.0. Thus, mentioning that as an aside when posting the link would save all those who don't have Net 3.0 from traipsing over to the site.

Hmmm, Bubby's gotta lot of free time... maybe along with eventually creating a list of software GAOTD members would like to see offered for free, maybe he could create a list of the Greatest Freeware on the Net, distilled from all the forum suggestions: Subject, Name and link. Links would have to be periodically updated if they change or disappear. Yeah, he's got time for that.

    Greatest Freeware on the Net

Hey, what's the big idea? I was saving that list for New Year's Eve, for my year's end finale.

Now I've got to spend another year finding 'em, make another list, and wait till New Year's Eve, 2008 to post it.

Such is the life of a freewarefan.... :-)

  7. Hello Guys! - that means gals too ;)
qb7894 - hello, welcome, and thank you! Your links will be put to good use, and the stellarium is a great find. I think whiterabbit takes the blame/credit (depending how you look at it, heh, heh) for many of us looking at the night skies again, from a whole new point of view.

Let me share a secret about posting - like many other things, the more you do it, the easier it becomes! So, hope we'll see some more from you in the near future.......
    Cheers,
    hamstergirl
