For those grumbling about wanting Half Life 2 AND you have an ATI video card, go get the latest driver update and you will get two Half Life 2 games FREE.
(Half Life 2: Deathmatch and Lost Coast)
You can also get other Half Life 2 games at 50% off once registered with Steam.

I followed their update process, but saw nothing about Half Life 2... Do you have a specific URL as an example?

You don't get the full game, but only one level, to tease you into buying it..

eaLazerBeam: Don't know why you didn't see it unless you bypassed the option to get them when installing the drivers.

Paali: Not true. I do not have HL2 on my system, but when I launch Deathmatch I can get into many different servers to play against others. When I launch Lost Coast, I am able to play single user of I guess what is one particular area of the game.

All I wanted to do was update my drivers to stop the flickering during some games (Snowy Lunch Rush as an example, but it didn't help) and now I can play a really violent shoot 'em up! LOL!

Okay, got Steam installed... Got the offer, accepted the license agreement, then:

This offer has already been activated using a different Steam account.

    Support site says:

The offer which you are attempting to register has already been activated on your machine.

I am absolutely sure that Steam has never been installed on my computer before, and that I have never claimed this offer before...

    Can anyone help?

eaLaserBeam: Is is possible someone else in our household created a Steam account? Does the "ea" in your name stand for "Electronics Arts" perhaps, and you created an account with Steam online at some time? (They have a lot of EA games in their list, so that is a wild guess!)

I would email the Steam (Valve) support guys and find out. Or maybe there is a "password forgotten" thingy where they will email your password to the email address registered?

Sorry not to be of any real help.

  7. Steam accounts are registered using an email address, steam account name and a password.

If you have a steam account already you should be able to retrieve your password using your email address.

If you know the account (but not the password) This Page should be of assistance to you.

    Steam General Support is Here

  10. Lost coast isn't actually a part of HL2 but a free (to HL2 owners) level Valve released later to demonstrate a few new features including the new (at the time) HDR graphics. wikipedia

Thanks for all the help - I am completely sure no Steam accounts have been registered on my computer before, and this is the first time I have used Steam. I emailed Tech Support earlier, and an waiting for a response.

Thanks for the forum link, BuBBy, I'll try the forums now.

I just want to play against my computer - not play on-line. I signed-up with Steam this past summer and I found a way to avoid the on-line game play. I have not been able to do the same recently.

I could not find directions for Half-Live and I went several months without checking on the games. Now that I found my old Half-Life game CD and have the instructions I can not get back to single player mode.

Any suggestions? Possibly I just played "Lost Coast" with its one level.

If THIS doesn't work - I suggest you post your question in the steam forums to take advantage of the more focused expertise found there.

    Steam support:

"The ATI registration is based on your Mac Address and MachineGUID."

Hmm, that's odd. The chances of someone having the same data is incredibly low, unless they use some encryption technique that generates non-unique hashes (even then the chances are low).

I wonder if some software on my PC could be blocking the process of obtaining the data or transmitting it (e.g. Comodo firewall, Vista itself...)
