Hi, guys, as promised, I culled these links from several folders. Some dated back about six years, so I needed to make sure they were still live. I know I have more but they must be on another hard drive. Apologies for any duplicates, but I've been dealing with a mean migraine, a fatcat banker who expects me to read three 12-page PDF's of microfine print legalese just a transfer some filthy lucre, an understandably frustrated Aussie (second time in a couple of weeks I've unintentionally ticked off a Sheila!), and I just got chewed out by Bubby for violating a cotton picking rule. (Rules are made to be bent, spindled and mutilated.) I'm going fishing.

Thank you so much for all those links RunesageMagi; Wow what a lot, (as he gleefully wrings his hands) ....sorry I didn't reply earlier. It's been an exhausting week and I've spent an inordinate amount of time catching up on Emails, my testing duties with a particular BF2 mod (Mercenaries), trying to write the perfect game giveaway review (lol) as well as play all the games I have; in between everything else. I wish there was at least 48 hours in every day and that I only needed my pre- accident amount of sleep which was around 4 to 6 hours (it’s now 14 to 18 hours).

I seem to have extended myself between too many forums over the net and am going to have to decide where my priorities lie. (for example I’m supposed too be taking over the administration of the map data base over on the Battlefield 2’s single player forums, but that alone would demand virtually all my time) I’ve actually made some potentially good friends since I started coming to the giveaway project on the 2nd December last year, so this has got to be one I keep visiting. Especially as there is so much to explore (‘scuse me; I’m in one of my waffling moods which are usually brought on by the buzz I get following my morphine dose).

Getting back on track --- [he forces himself to concentrate {as he glances over to one of the other computers, where he’s uninstalling all his wireless software as the d**ned thing wont connect to the internet via the router, so is having to uninstall and start afresh}] -----

Yeah, really, thank you so much. I’m sorry to be so lazy at not searching myself. It’s great that people on this forum are sharing all their treasured links with the community as I’m sure some of the links took a lot of time and effort to find. (I’m still reeling over the discovery of a treasure trove of Grateful Dead live concert tracks thanks to links on this site – man I can’t believe what can be found on the net for free and legal).

I’ll report back on what I feel about the stuff you’ve posted just as soon as I can. :)

    Regards

    WhiteRabbit

    p.s.

My names derived from Jefferson Airplanes song, sung by Grace Slick. I use SlickWhiteRabbit for my address for such things as Skype and AIM lol. Although Jefferson is not my most favourite band from that period, some of their songs remind me of the period so strongly. Also while I was at university 'White Rabbit' as well as a few other Jefferson tracks such as 'Volunteers' and 'Somebody to Love' were regular records to freeform dance under the influence of whatever. Nostalgia, where would we be without it… :)

    What a wonderful list!

Fractals are really thrilling. If I only could understand them - Ooooooh... maths !

    I made some nice graphics.

    Hi, graylox gramma,

Please consider "Hi guys" an asecular/asexual salutation of the good-natured kind. I'm math-challenged, too; proved it by flubbing counting on my fingers the other day.

Thanks for your additions! I skipped posting that census link, couldn't quickly figure out why I had it in my folder. The german site you found looked familiar, so I'll scan my other folders with that as a search term to see if I can ferret out more links. This thread didn't garner near as much interest as I anticipated. :-( Guess I won't spend time now posting links to 3-D/CAD galleries. That's a whole different genre of eyecandy, IMHO more enjoyable and less risky than screensaver sites.

    Off Topic to FreewareFan:

Thanks for posting that free mobile game link. Almost didn't load those games as I have nothing portable/pda/mobile/cellular/ipodish and thus didn't initially catch the significance of the "Windows PC" button. In case others opted not to download for similar reasons, the games do indeed work on my WinXP PC. whoo hah Now I've another good alternative to MSFT's Solitaire, and my vicarious thrill meter always enjoys interactive/soar through space type games. The concentration/focusing exercise of that Mah-jong mimic should help quell anyone's ADHD while they're downloading all the good stuff on GAOTD.

Sorry to miss a chance to spoof you for posting the free MSVista offer. I see where a few of the regulars took you out to the woodshed. You coulda provided a link to a russian mail order bride site with built-in malware generators and gotten less flack. :-)

Bill Gates has jumped the shark so many times, Sea World offered him a full time headliner gig after Vista's debut. However, the GWSU (Great White Shark Union) lodged a protest, fearing he'd force their members to use his autoupdater validation software to prove they weren't open source knockoffs.

Hi, RunesageMagik (sorry I amputated your name in my last post),

speaking about 3D - do you mean this :

    http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/phy11733/index_e.html

    or perhaps that :

    http://www.computerarts.co.uk/downloads/3d__and__animation/tale_of_rock

3D is just another sore point of mine; I don't even understand the GUI (is that the right word?) of Blender.
But enough headache for today - now it's 2 o'clock in the morning here - time to turn on my 3D.scr - good old sheep counting.

Have a nice day or night - graylox

    White Wabbit -
Sorry about your accident, but I'll pit my dysfunctional biorhythm against yours anyday and give you a head start to compensate for the morphine drip. Been on 28+ hour days since the college years.

Regards Deadheads, looks like you've a few sites to listen to - http://tinyurl.com/ytqaml

FYI- I downloaded SKYPE last year, but never found anyone else who admitted to using it or expressed any desire to use it. Seems everyone but me has fallen under the spell of the telco's expensive unlimited phone service offers that commit them to a $1200 a year bill for combined services, not including Fed. taxes, user fees, local corrupt govt bleedings, etc. Your handle won't be one easily forgotten, so keep an eye out for a kindly old wizard. Well, first I have to check for any upgrades and reread the fine print about transoceanic PC to PC chitchats.

You must have missed the URL I captioned - "Fractal Taffy" that lead to the same Stuttgart site. FWIW, there are several peculiar galleries there, and all remind me of taffy, or what bubble gum looks like when a bored secretary twirls it around her finger, or like a lump of playdoh the kids dropped into granny's KitchenAid mixer when she wasn't looking. I get the impression Blender is oriented more towards the "poser" end of modeling, and while it's all greek to me, the results seem kinda "flat" compared to Bryce & POVRayTrace. http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/features/

Personally, I'd be happy to master a few advanced Photoshop techniques before I die, but I still take pregnant pauses to bang my head against the monitor in order to remember where the bloody Show Brushes command is hiding. Software goodies such as Twisted Brush are gathering dust. When it comes to creating art, this is more my speed - http://www.becomeanmm.com/

Just ran across this. Thought it might interest you fractal fans.

    Download here: http://software.techrepublic.com.com/download.aspx?docid=213470&tag=nl.e072

"Overview: Fractal Wallpaper is a program that creates fractals in real time and sets them as your wallpaper. You can run the program and let it create pictures in time intervals you define. All the fractals that the program creates are made in real time. Version 1.1 optimized fractal creation, changed color palette, and fixed the LoadonStartup bug.

    Format: Software | Size: 427KB | Date: Oct 2005 | Version: 1.1 | System Requirements: Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 Server | License: Free "

Wow, Vamp, thanks very much. I've been a member of techrepub for a while, but had to disable their email push service, couldn't keep up reading their security and programming articles. Never thought to use [fractals] as a search term there. Will definitely try that download ... but fear it could spell disaster. I'm likely to spend way too much time hitting SHOW DESKTOP just to see the latest eyecandy it's created.

There are some other links on that page that look promising, too. I seem to recall coming across a fractal wallpaper appl a long time ago, but it isn't in my compendium. Guess it either wasn't freeware or my old PC wasn't up to the challenge of cranking out mandlebrots AND running Photoshop and Dragon simultaneously.

If you and hamstergirl ever combine forces, we're going to be in deep pellet!

Well, I dug out what I could see by email address changes, my over 10 year old Tech Republic sign on info (and now had to give them my phone number!!) so I was able to d/l Fractal Wallpaper. Really cool! I was tempted to set it to change the wallpaper every minute, but that may cause my system to cough so left it at 60 minutes. Til I get antsy and want to see all the artwork, anyway.
    Thanks for ALL the links!

    Hello,

The Fractint link given above seems dead.

I found one here that seems to be the latest and that is for Win32. I remember this one from way back.
I must confess that fractals and chaos were responsible for changing Molecular Biology undergrad to Applied Math graduate studies back in 93.

Keeping a thread alive... or hijacking it? You be the judge. This isn't a fractals link, it's digital art wallpaper.

    I'd caption this sample -
"Sigh, people are getting so lazy, I gotta come up with ideas myself!"
    or perhaps -
"The Lightbulb Faerie... where bright ideas really come from."

OMG! I downloaded BOMB today and have been playing with it for hours. Not exactly fractals, but a great eye-candy toy. Read the manual for keyboard controls or start any music source then start bomb and let the show begin.

Bomb is a visual-musical instrument. It uses alife, and is alife. It runs on your PC and produces animated organic graphics in response to the keyboard, audio music, or on its own. You can download it from this web site, and run it on your PC.

Has anyone tried BOMB yet? It is a really old program but I got it to work on Windows XP. Today, I turned on some music, started it in auto mode then started playing with the simple controls. I found that adjusting the audio levels (up & down arrows) made quite a difference to the display. I'm going to load some of my own gif files to the image library to see what that will produce. Just to give you an idea of what it can do, I've attached a review and screen shots from the site. It's much more interesting than the screen shots because the images are constantly evolving while it's running.

I played around with Bomb some more the other day. I loaded a few of my own gif files into the image library, turned on some old instrumental surf music and let the bomb run. I experimented with some of the keyboard inputs to see what would develop. The program allows screen shots to be dumped into a directory named "Dribble" by pressing the "=" key. It's a bit hit or miss as to what you will get because of ever-changing display. The screen shots are saved with a .ppm file extension. I uses the freeware IfanView to do a batch conversion to .jpg format.

BTW - I guess this is a fractal program, as it unzips into a directory named "Fractal Bomb".

Here is the slideshow of my Bomb screenshots. I did not have a chance to cull these to get rid of the really ugly pics.

    _______________________________________________________
Note: If you decide to download Bomb be aware that it took a long time to unzip the files. I thought Windows Extraction Wizard had froze the first time I installed it, so I aborted. I had the program unzipped and was running it. But upon further investigation, I realized that I didn't have all of the files in the image library. I unzipped it again, rewriting the prior files and allowing it to finish the unzipping of the remaining files.
