I was impressed by the list of ‘non’ awards that someone claims to be the truth with respect to Almeza’s claims to have received quite a few awards. Which was presented in the comments section of the Captain Trays giveaway. There were over 12 sites quoted as being false with respect to the claims that Almeza has made on it’s home page, where if you follow a discreetly placed link you will find 20 or so awards listed. The poster of these comments lambasts Almeza as well as indicates that giving away products from such a company as this will only taint the giveaway projects name.

I have the time to check things out when I’m in the mood and thought I’d do some simple research myself. I checked out six of the claimed awards:

Download2you.com which I found gave this product 5 stars, which was indicated as false by the commenter, who I may add has received over 100 positive votes for his in depth and well researched post. Then I checked Hotlib which the poster claims “shows no evidence of the 5-Star award advertised by the developer” (which also implied that there was none) well he was partially right as it was actually awarded 3 stars. I also checked BrotherSoft which the commenter said the “award is notable only for its complete absence”, which again is totally not true as I found immediately that Brothersoft had awarded it 5 stars as claimed by Almeza.
Shareup.com also gave it 5 stars and global software 4 stars. The only one I didn't find was Geekinfo.com, but it was a legitimate site until it closed down, evidenced by the fact that the page I was taken to said the www.geekinfo.com domain was for sale. At this point I decided to stop, partly because I realized it was getting really late (3am) and I also felt that what I’d found just proved that what has been said has no real foundation. And in my opinion should be deleted from the comments section, or at least the parts that are propagating the badly researched and mainly totally wrong evidence. I believe that the sort of accusation that has been thrown against a company who seem to me to be absolutly squeeky clean would be called libel and could possibly lead to some sort of leagal action by the denigrated party, ie Almeza.

I do hope that the comment hasn’t done too much damage. I wouldn’t be surprised though if Almeza decided to pull out of the project, which would be a great shame. Looking at the scoring with only 4 hours to go it looks like the damage has already been done. 68% of 191 votes were thumbs down to what I can only say is a nice piece of software.

What I did find was that using different search engines to research something such as this was definitely important because using only one would give a negative, whereas trying the same query on another one would yield a positive result.

It wasn’t my intention to try to rip apart what was a really well written and seemingly well researched piece of work; my intention was just one of confirmation and curiosity. It shocked me to find such negativity when there was really no cause for it. . It seems to me that he purposely wanted to make Almeza look dishonest.

What set me off on this was my own experience with the software which was a positive one and also The Bladed Thoths excellent and impartial review.

I can easily post evidence to support my findings in the form of screenshots. (but it would just be as easy for anyone to check what I say is true by going to these sites yourself and searching for Captain Tray Pro) I didn’t think to take them while actually doing the research, but as it only took me about five minutes to search for six positive hits and only one negative it would only take me 10 to 15 minutes to take some captures and post them to my photobucket account. Unfortunately as I’ve already said, the damage seems to have already been done.

I have only been a member of gaotd for a few months and am a newbiee to boot but have posted several times about how much I rely upon your posts as well as those of Blade tooth before downloading and trying most products. I am a 56 year old female just getting into computers. And the fun side of computing. I love the games, and am learning to do things I never knew possible before.
That said...I agree with you that the comments made should have been checked out before the moderators allowed that message to be public.. No software made is PERFECT for everyone. I like cream in my coffee but don't demand that everyone should have it!. As you so stated a little research is all it takes and evidently our "friend" either used a sorry search engine or just really had a bad day... but he blasted a company that was really trying to help us by giving us a try at their product.
The harm he did that company reflects on all of us....Especially us newbeeies....If I had not read your comments I would have shied away from this company without even appraising their other software.
Thank you for reminding me to do a little more research on my own. I hope the moderators of our site take this lesson to heart and check such negative reviews for accuracy in the future.
I wish you had a wider forum...or a home page like bladed tooth so I could access your opinions more readily.
Perhaps... when I hit the lottery.... I shall endow you with one...lol..Then us newwbeeies will have less trouble finding you.
Until then I shall always be grateful for the knowledge I have gleamed from your writings.
I pray for your health and well being....Gratefully yours qb7894

  3. I think it is important that I point out that the moderators of the forums are not the moderators of the comments section. We do not have direct access to approve or reject comments but we can certainly intervene and request that comments are edited or removed entirely if necessary.

For the most part I don't have a lot of confidence in many of the comments made in the comments area. The are made completely anonymously (not linked to a logged in user id) and (from past experiences) many are obviously not individually read.

I like to refer to the comments section as "the peanut gallery" - the comparison is in my belief for the most part entirely appropriate.

If there are comments which you feel are definitely inappropriate (as opposed to comments you merely disagree with) then you can PM myself, or one of the other moderators who can review the posts to determine if further action is warranted - we can anonymously ask the GOTD team on your behalf.

Obvious examples are posts that may be abusive or personal attacks, inappropriate website links, posting personal contact information (such as email addresses), posting information that abuses the rights of others (including copyright).

Naturally we cannot be in all places at all times - but if others are aware of options to keep the site "friendly" and "clean" - we can address problems when they occur.

Also just in case anyone was wondering - the other forum moderators and myself are all volunteer users (like everyone else) - we aren't "employed" by GOTD, we just have agreed to work together to make these forums a possibility. We appreciate anything you can do to help us keep everything running smoothly.

Whiterabbit, GMTA! I planned to search/verify all the awards listed this weekend but it looks like you beat me to it. I saw the slam against Almeza on what Bubby politely calls the peanut gallery thread, and IMHO it read like someone who either carries a personal or perhaps competitive grude/agenda against the company. Anyone familiar with web design knows how difficult it is to maintain continuity on a multi-tiered site, especially as a company diversifies. If it's a public company, badmouthing shorts and ex-employees will often lay in wait and pounce if they catch an error, then blow it out of proportion to try and scare off investors. Off-site links are outside a web designer's control. Links can break. Awards originally credited to a product don't necessarily carry over when a new version's released. Bots can be slow to spider a site so Google results may be out of date. Even stupid typos and other erratum can slip into uploaded text blocks or templates and if not expunged promptly, they mutate and leak into other pages. It's enough to drive web masters batty.

Hi BuBBy, I realise that you don't moderate the 'peanut gallery' and also appreciate the hard work you have put into moderating the forums section of the giveaway project. I've only been using the forums regularly for just over a week and have seen the number of posts you've commented on and moderated since the forums were opened. I just never had the time (or so I thought) to be bothered with the forums previously, and as you have already mentioned in another post somewhere, we always seem to be busy not only here but on several forums elsewhere with different responsibilities on each. (e.g. on one particular forum I visit I've poster around 1300+ posts over the last 17 months)

As I also said above. I'm not one for flaming any poster as we are all entitled to our own opinion;. (and in this case as always, apart from some of my first ever comments, I have tried to keep the poster anonymous); However when I see blatant misrepresentations I do feel it is my duty (as I have much more time than most) to mention these incidents.

Personally I don’t often check the giveaway section out as most of the software I don't need or want, but when I do occasionally browse the comments and see one such as I saw yesterday, which in the first instance really impressed me. It caught my interest and as I had time I thought I'd just check a few of the facts. It was disturbing (and believe it or not, upsetting) to discover how wrong someone can be.

By the way, thanks for the support qb7894. As for setting up a separate site, it’s an okay idea, and I’d love to do it, but in some ways it seems self effacing to create such a site unless you have ulterior motives, such as earning cash on the side, which in some cases can be to the detriment of those visiting your site, as often this involves having loads of adverts trying to vie for attention, i.e. click me for this bargain, or that bargain. :) maybe I’m being a little too serious over this, lol etc. But I still think it in some ways doing this can fragment the whole thing.

Something I’ve seen with one of the games that has a big fan base that I play. Just the one mod at one point had several different web sites run by different enthusiasts. Most of them died, simply because it became too much bother to visit them, although there are still a few running, I only make cursory visits to then simply because I appreciate the efforts they have made to improve the experience. I was once seriously involved in what are generally termed clan sites. Both myself and the other admin put a lot of effort into the site, but because there were loads of sites doing the same thing we gave up after what amounts to thousands of man hours with very few people visiting the site.
    Edit:

Well said Runesage Magi, your post wasn't visible when I posted this comment. I agree with you 100% in what you say.
