OK, folks, here's another free offering from Ashampoo. Ashampoo Office 2006 is a great office suite, and if you've found Open Office to be lacking, why not try this collection from Ashampoo? Runs on WinXP and Vista! Can't beat the price, just follow the instructions on the following page:

With all the free shampoo you've been getting lately, you're gonna need some conditioner, don't you think? :-)

UPDATE: The more I use this Program, the more I really do like it! It loads about 4 times faster than OpenOffice, has more functions, and has a smaller footprint. I really do suggest that members give it a try, you just might like it too!

I should mention that after you get the free serial number for installation, you then need to actually register the program with Ashampoo, and then they send you another Reg Code, free of charge, that you enter within the actual program.

The Excel replacement program uses the same Reg Code, so you only have to register once.

Did I mention that I really, really like this program?

  5. FreewareFan, how does it cope reading and saving to Microsoft Office File Formats? (eg. Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

One of the reasons so many of the "alternative" Office suites have problems being accepted as a practical alternative is the users often cannot open and work with their existing MS documents or documents that are sent to them. Also the MS programs cannot work with (or retain features and formatting) with the "alternative Office programs".

From memory "powerpoint" has been the one program in office suites that developers claim is the most difficult to accurately copy the final presentation output. Word and Excel IIRC have been successfully "emulated".

    Hello, BuBBY!

The MS Word formats it reads and saves to include .doc (all versions from MS Word 6.0 through MS Word XP/2003), .rtf, .psw, .pwd, .htm, and it's native formats of .tmd and .tmv ...

The MS Excel formats it reads and saves to include .xls, .xlt, .slk, .rtf, .dbf, and .dif ...

The suite also has a built in utility to install the suite onto a USB stick, that can be run from any computer. Neat feature.

Alas, the suite does not do Powerpoint, so if that is a necessary feature for someone, then this won't cut the mustard. I don't do PP, so I didn't even think of that feature as being missing.

All in all, if one doesn't rely upon PowerPoint all that much, then this suite is the way to go, imho, as far as speed, compatibility, and ease of use.

I bought this version a couple of months ago, mainly because of the included dictonaries since I needed a spellcheck for German, which my MS office did not have included.
Integration with Word and Excel documents is flawless, they all open up perfectly in both directions. (Original Excel, opened and modified, re-opened in Excel).
    Pura vida!

  8. Thanks for that info - I'm sure others will appreciate this, if they are at all worried about compatibility.

If you are more interested in being able to look at powerpoint presentations (and not as interested in creating them) - like when friends send 'joke emails' which arrive as a *.ppt file - this might also prove useful to have installed.

    Download details: PowerPoint Viewer 2007

Thanks, BuBBy, I got a copy of PowerPoint Viewer 2007, and will archive it for any possible future use I might have.

Like I said, I don't do PP, but one never knows. Just because I haven't had a need for it in the last 10 years, doesn't mean I won't need it tomorrow!
