I would greatly appreciate a decent or "better" dvd ripper. The ones given recently have bad ratings and i've even tried a few myself. One of the most recent dvd ripper giveaways only provided the option of being able to rip at 1000 kbps for video. That is mediocre quality and I have also noticed that the dvd rippers given away in the past have better ratings and the ones given away more recently received lower and lower ratings as time progressed. Please giveaway a better quality dvd ripper. Thanks in advance!!!

  4. I would *love* to see Minions of Mirth(http://www.prairiegames.com/) as a game give away. Its the closest thing to free old school Everquest I've found. And it can be played off line, thats right the game world of an MMORPG all to your self! Or run a personal server for you and your friends, maybe just GOTD'ers.

Anyways, put up for consideration. Thanks for the awesome sites GOTD team, keep up the kickass work. =D

There are quite a few good games that have a version 2 that just came out, so to promote them, how about the version 1's like Chocolatier, Dream Chronicles, Build-a-Lot, Virtual Villagers, etc. It could be a natural win-win for developers and GOTD patrons alike. Also, there are some older games like Capitalism 1 & 2 and Settlers 3 & 4 that are still on the market and could use a little marketing because they are still fantastic games. Two more personal favorites that are different and could use some promotion are Fate and Jo Jo's Fashion Show.

    Thanks for listening!

We all need a good truly-functional utility, for XP (for sure, and possibly for Vista), that would allow the moving/"transporting"/"migrating" (and possibly "archiving") of entire software applications to another XP (and/or possibly Vista) computer, or to another disk drive (changed drive letter).

If moving to another computer, or to be stored as an "archive", it would be via a stand-alone single EXE re-installer file (so that no similar "transport" application would need to pre-exist on the "target" computer).

This would include gathering things like related Registry entries (with any user registration info); DLL or other shared or non-shared file dependencies; Start Menu, Send To, right-click context menu, etc. shortcuts; possibly related plug-ins that permit "integration" into such things as MS Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc.

I would think that this would be an extremely popular utility. There's definitely a huge market for a successfully-implemented up-to-date version that is stable, easy-to-use, straightforward, and uncluttered.

There are enough "pure" uninstallers these days, so I'm not really referring to THAT function. But I think in order to be a good mover/"transporter" the same ability as an uninstaller is needed (to analyze what files and entries are involved), so perhaps it's a 2-for-1 deal anyway. Apparently the best success at uninstalling/transporting programs comes when they are "monitored" by the uninstaller/transporter utility before and after their initial installation or any updates so that all file and Registry changes can be "tracked".

The original/best/most successful version of such an application at one time was MicroHelp's Uninstaller, later known as CyberMedia Uninstaller, then (unfortunately) sold to Computer Associates/McAfee who pretty much quit supporting it years ago and have now buried it. In its heyday millions of copies were sold. I think the same potential exists today.

Under Windows 95, 98, and to some extent ME and NT, Uninstaller was one of the best at not only uninstalling most all traces of a program, but more importantly (for me) it had the handy "transport" feature which allowed registered software to be moved from one machine to another (or to another drive on the same PC).

For folks like me with software needed for clients that goes back over a decade (some of the companies are now gone!) this was a god-send when I moved to newer computers.

I last checked on it a few months ago at the McAfee web site, but today I noticed that I can no longer find references to this product.

In any event, after McAfee got a hold of it and released a supposedly XP-compatible version 6 (the final was 6.51) they pretty much totally messed up the previously straight-forward user interface, and it became very slow and unstable when running.

Unfortunately McAfee apparently didn't invest any effort into debugging/updating it and it died fairly quickly afterwards -- perhaps it was intentional?...

There are a few currently existing products with this feature that claim to do this, such as Laplink's PCmover (which apparently charges per machine "migration") and Ashampoo UnInstaller (I think), but from the reviews I've read they aren't universally successful in this regard.

I have the retail install EXE file for the final version 6.51 if a genuine developer needed it to try and see how it works. I suppose they could leave a comment in this thread that I would eventually see.

I would appreciate a startup manager which allows you to select an autorun profile on startup e.g. gaming profile with few applications auto-running and a full profile which ran everything on startup.

    I know of two programs that do this;

    Chameleon Startup Manager http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm

    Ultimate Startup Manager http://www.gigabest.com/

    Thanks :)

Something that would be extremely useful for me would be UnJPEG, which reduces the effects of JPEG compression on images and photos. I would love to see this on GOTD, if it could be done. Thanks.

USB Safely Remove - I believe 3.3 now

This is a utility that runs in the lower right and replaces the safely remove hardware feature. It can use hot keys and each item can be custom labeled to avoid confusion. It is a great utility and normally goes for $20. Very good ratings on d@wnl@ad.c@m. I love it and would like to see it here

You know what would make a great game giveaway? One of those "bridge building" games. There are a number of versions, but I'm sure that the author could be convinced to give one of them away for the exposure.

One of my students brought his in a few days ago during free time, and we had a ball trying to cross the river.

(More thoughts about wanting a utility that could "migrate" an already-installed application from one machine to another.

Unfortunately an ongoing discussion of this with "white wabbit" (same as "whiterabbit" aka Stephen?) and a couple of others which was started as a separate topic apparently got removed by the moderators. Funny, they allow topics on just about everything else (weird stuff, just for men, etc.))

Anyway here's a hopefully-simplified repeat of what I'm hoping some enterprising developer can provide, or perhaps someone knows of an already-existing product (commercial, shareware, freeware/open-source) that would do the same thing:

***** I'd like to see a utility that could "bundle up" a registered/installed software applicaton into some form (with all it's related/required DLL, INI, INF, etc. files or needed keys/records, Windows Registry entries with user registration license info, driver files if needed, etc.) that would allow the bundle to be re-installed on another machine, completely working again. *****

I had suggested that earlier versions of the now-obsolete MicroHelp/CyberMedia/McAfee "Uninstaller" might be used as a model (the later McAfee versions were terrible and unsupported). Among other functions, it could correctly create a "transport" file (named <app-name>.EXE) that would function as a stand-alone re-installer once copied to the target machine.

In this way it easily "migrated" software to new/replacement machines complete with all their updates, tweaks, etc. The versions that worked right were extremely popular back then.

However, I don't care what technology is used as long as a utility with the "migration" function can be identified or created.

I had suggested that perhaps a newer product might avoid the objections of multiple installed copies of software by some kind of "handshake" between the locally-connected machines, so that only one copy could be installed and running at a time, while the other copy is "archived" and dormant.

Using a local-only connections (LAN or USB) to activate/install a copy from the original to the target machine would help prevent widespread P2P file sharing from being an issue.

The archive copy could be used to re-install on the original machine in case, say, the target machine copy did not work right (sort of like using Windows "System Restore") or was only temporarily installed on, say, a traveling laptop user that was "borrowing" his own software from his desktop machine.

(Perhaps the GiveAwayOfTheDay team could lend its own activation technology scheme to a programmer to use to develop this product!?)

  29. Anyone remember those cut-out cardboard models we used to have as kids, that you'ld glue together into something like a house or a car (or nowadays, a Ms Pacman cabinet :-) )

A couple of professionally designed models might make a cool game giveaway for people looking to spend some time with the kids away from the computer.

There are a lot of free ones out there of course, but also a few sold commercially. I think there's a guy who does some pretty cool Disney designs for example (like the haunted house etc)
