is it just me, or do people complain about getting FREE STUFF?
am I the only one who thinks it is annoying?

    1. people who rate negative rating, the rating system is for the program, not if you like it or not. you give a negative rating IF the program itself is bad, not if you have no use for it

    2. people who complain that software is useless, this website is for companies to get comments, not for you to get what YOU want for free.

    3. don't like screen savers? DON"T DOWNLOAD THEM (I personally, don't like them too,but I don't give a bad rating just because it is a screen saver.

    4. People who hate double games, don't download them (I am curious however, why does double games keep coming up, I think that it is clear to them that A LOT of people hate double games for poor quality, unstable, too childish, .....ect)

    5. How can you be negative about free stuff? I agree with most people that the software and games lately have been......worthless even thought they are free, but don't download them! wait for tomorrow (although I have waited for a week :)

    6. for people how keep saying that they want adobe cs2, age of empires,......
    WAKE UP!
do you really expect a company like adobe and Microsoft giving out free programs here? this site is for companies to be known, I think that a lot of people if not everyone knows about Microsoft here. there is no way that Microsoft is going to give out Halo, Vista, Age of Empires 2, or EA GAMES giving out need for speed hot pursuit 2, battlefield 2.

    7. If you want programs/games, BUY THEM!
most people don't want to buy stuff including me, but if no one buys the stuff, why would companies make them?

Sorry if I offended a lot of people, but I'm just tired of people complaining about stuff they should not even get in the first place

Too true, I download both the program/game from giveawayoftheday no matter if it's a screensaver or doublegames, I don't complain until I checked out the app... who cares if it's not suited for you/me/the monkey in the corner, other people will find the app/game/screensaver useful/enjoyable and I use quite a few apps from giveawayoftheday :D

  3. Glad you started a thread Kevin. I think weve all stated it over in the comments when listening to the many cry about what was being offered.

I don't download much. Only what catches my attention. Oh if others are having problems, I'll download, decompile on occasion and try it to give them a hand or validate a claim there making which 99 times out of 100 its actually on them and not the software.

Both of you are absolutely right. I have to admit though, it is funny sometimes to read the comments.

thanks for the support people :)

    Hadeda,
    I do the same too
I don't like screen savers, but once in a while, there is one that does not take too much memory, and has very good graphics
yet, look at the comments, about 1/3 are "I hate screen savers" or "who uses screen savers?"
    sigh....
people take too much for granted
but still, I have to admit
so far double games has not done a good job.....

    Posted 1 year ago #
  5. Actually I don't use either but then again, who cares. And thats the whole point. Just because I don't have a need for games or screensavers doesn't mean I have to comment about it.

I don't think to many that download from this site come to the forum. I didn't notice it until a few weeks ago myself. Maybe if more did, they'd understand the purpose for the giveaways and at least talk about it here.

  6. Yes I was in the grocery store today, and there was a lady standing behind a display. She had an electric frypan cooking up some sausage and giving away small samples to other shoppers to taste. I just stood next to her for a few hours and told everyone (and her) who came over to sample, just how much I hate sausage. In fact I made sure to tell everyone so they all knew that I don't even like the smell of sausage. It makes me feel sick... and it is so fatty. I can't believe anyone would like eating sausage. She is there on the same day every week. I am sick of people giving away sausage samples. Why don't they give away lobster or swiss chocolate. In fact I think unless they start giving away food I like - I'm not going to shop there anymore (except to complain about those sausage samples).

    Sound familiar?

    lol
people think that this site is made for them, but it is not
it is made for companies to get suggestions for "customers"

    Posted 1 year ago #
  8. Now if anyone can't understand that.................. hehehehe

  9. Actually I think the "comments" or reviews are nice, but not expected or the reason the site exists (I don't think the site would shut down if the number or quality of comments dropped) - I think it is mainly exposure (kind of like advertising) - and people come back for the adverts because there is something in it for them (a freebie). If a user likes the software, some may purchase or upgrade the giveaways. The website and publishers/developers appear to have a symbiotic relationship.

As for people who complain - I agree there is definitely a sense of entitlement many of these users demonstrate. No amount of complaining about the complainers will make these people understand.

If the giveaway lady in the supermarket was cooking fishfinger samples - these people would complain that she wasn't offering lobster. If you want lobster and nobody is giving it away for free... you spend some money and buy the lobster yourself.

If someone is not willing to spend their own money to get what they want - they shouldn't complain when the company isn't prepared to sacrifice the sales revenue by giving it away for free. Remember many companies probably won't see a giveaway as a charity - in any business transaction they are expecting some sort of return on their investment.

  10. Sorry people but I just read a thread about how my posts are taken. And I couldn't help myself. LOL

Your right, people will complain over anything. I don't think I would complain if BuBBy gave me 10 bucks and I wanted 20! Try it dude and lets see.

In a nutshell, this is advertisement. I wouldn't give away my "top of the line" software. I'd give away just a taste and they could upgrade.

  11. I don't think I would complain if BuBBy gave me 10 bucks and I wanted 20!

What if I gave you $10 every day for two weeks, and then one day I gave you $5. How many people would protest wanting to know what happened to their $10 they are supposed to get? How many users would feel like I am being tight or cheap - and that they are getting ripped off $5 ??

    Think about that one!!

when people get free programs, they assume that they can get what they want EVERY day.
the other side of human nature, greedy!!!!!

  14. Its like they are on a warz site. Now that would be a funny situation when this forum filled up with people needing help getting rid of unwanted (stuff) coded into software they downloaded from such a site.

Maybe some more options are needed, eg.
    Like it
    Hate it
    Can't be bothered with it

After all, there are few programs that would appeal to all... Give away Windows Vista, and those who would rather have XP would complain.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  16. Good idea leecher. The votes in on BuBBy, he's to tight with his money.

Seeing as how Archangel mentioned Warez. I've noticed that a number of products that appear on this site turn up hours later on Warez sites, usually using the same license codes as GAOTD.

Now, it could be that all these software products are getting cracked in rapid time, but it seems far more likely to me that Activate.exe, and its license/registry insertion code is the one that has been cracked.

An unwanted side effect of GAOTD perhaps...

  18. They think they are clever, but they are only biting the hand that feeds them. If someone gave them $50 they would probably try to pickpocket their wallet as well. Perhaps we will see more giveaways where the registration code is verified online during install (by the giveaway setup program at the developers website) - and the code then made invalid after 24 hours.

  19. hehehe Hey Bill, whats a Warez site? LOL (I misspelled it too but you didn't LOL) rotflmao

That's to be expected when you have god knows how many people downloading whats posted here. Most of what I've seen here isn't worth the time to crack so I'd say its simply being taken from here and posted on a "Warez Site" (thanks again for the correct spelling Bill LOL) The crap posted today sure would be a waste of time!

It would be so simple for them to do a registration code that way. Plus they'd know exactly how many installed there software too.

    Hello guys,

I see myself as having two choices each day - wade through all the trashy comments (seeking the good ones,) or don't read any of them (to save my sanity!) and just hope the software is ok.

I can only imagine what the developers must think. I'd be so p*****d if I were them, to think that I was giving out all those full, free licenses, only to receive the jarring comments like the daily garbage we see everyday.

Bubby: Can I please have (only) $5 a day please? I'm not greedy. :)

Don't laugh at me guys, :) (ok, so I'm laughing at myself here,) but I honestly don't know what a warez site is! Is it like a crack site?

I don't like the voting system in the comments section either. TOO OFTEN, the votes are done by people who haven't even downloaded the software to give an informed opinion! Look what happens with Double Games - and in all honesty, there are two or three of DG games that I just happen to enjoy.

The voting system needs to change - someone (I can't remember who now,) suggested elsewhere in the forums that the choices should change. I've expanded on his choices and ideas as follows:

    * Don't need it;

    * Downloaded but haven't tested yet;

    * Tested and reviewed;

    * Downloaded - no review.

AND ONLY THEN vote for thumbs up or down! At least each vote would make more sense then. The little pop-up box that appears when you vote thumbs down, should appear with these choices for when either vote is made - before the vote.

Sometimes I think GOTD should just hand over the website to us - we'd know how to run it huh? (1/2 joking!)

    Have a great day guys!

Actually, I just had another idea!

Regarding the voting system; if you were to vote 'don't need it;' or 'downloaded but haven't tested;' should have their vote button greyed out, so that they can't vote at all.

    I love it! ;)

  22. A warez site supplies pirated software and sometimes movies. Warez is just slang for that kind of stuff.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  23. They also often "supply" spyware, viruses, and trojans.

Warez should be discussed elsewhere. It is not a topic appropriate for these forums.

I agree with Swan, the voting needs to change
Warez is illegal programs, software, games, movies...ect
you could get caught for it
it is the same as stealing software, games,......ect
warez sometimes "supply" spyware, viruses...ect, but the main reason why you should not download them is because it is illegal and because why would a company make software if they don't get paid for it?
    WAREZ= BAD

I'm not trying to play Devil's Advocate here, but I think some of you may be mistaken. I don't know the details of the relationships between GaOTD and the software developers, but from what I can tell, GaOTD does in fact pay the developers for the right to distribute their software. Even if that payment is at a greatly reduced rate, the software companies are still making money and are therefore not giving away free software.
Next point: Given that GaOTD are spending money on the software they are providing to visitors of this site, Kevin is probably wrong in saying that the point of GaOTD is for visitors to provide feedback to the developers. My guess is that GaOTD's main objective is to attract advertising revenue from other developers. Free giveaways attract large numbers of visitors. Large numbers of visitors attract advertising dollars. Seems logical enough to me.
Plus, I really don't think the comments section or the up/down voting is for the developers at all. I'm sure those companies have done their own market research (unless the developer is just some kid in his parents' basement) and know pretty well how their software compares with the competition. They're probably there for no other reason than to provide some interactivity for the visitors of this site. Again, it's all about attracting large numbers of visitors. Typically, the more interactive a site is, the more popular it is.
I think you're right about all the worthless comments in the comments section though. The typical "This is awesome!!!" or "This is crap!!!" are a complete waste of space. But those people just like to see their words in print. Don't let it bother you that much. It's also interesting to note that the number of "anti-complainers" almost equals the number of "complainers" on any given day. I'd be happy to see both types of posts disappear.
Anyway, I'm rambling. As always, I'll be back tomorrow.

Oh yeah, one more thing. The reason that I find most of the anti-compainer comments so annoying is that they tend to be personal attacks against other GaOTD visitors. Just my opinion, though.
    Take care.

    5. And the last but not least - our Giveaway of the day.

    also, yes
giveaway does pay for the software, seems like they wasted some money on some companies
i agree with you jermiah "personal attacks against other GaOTD visitors"
"Kevin is probably wrong " lol :)
yeah, I'm probably am (next time, say Kevin IS wrong :), but you have to admit, a lot of people have been asking about how giveaway make money or get even, and so far I have no heard of a reasonable answer
What I don't get is since giveaway is paying for the games/software why can't they pick "better" companies? I understand that everyone has a different idea of a better company, but if the giveaway people look at the game and don't even want to play it, then they should not put it online

    Kevin,
Sorry. I really wasn't trying to offend(there was no name calling;) ). Just saying you shouln't be that concerned about the negativity. Honestly, I completely agree with your assertion that people shouldn't be posting worthless complaints. I do however appreciate the informed critisism that some people offer. A lot of times those posts help me decide if I'm going to dl something or not.
And I've been looking for a good explanation as to how GaOTD pays for itself also. One day I'll actually send an e-mail asking them "point blank". Who knows? Maybe I'll get an answer.
As for your question about why GaOTD can't secure better software, it could just be that they aren't generating enough advertising revenue to spend more money on reputable software. Just a guess.
Either way, I've been checking in here every day for at least 6 or 7 months, so they must be doing something right. And I've gotten a few goodies for free. What could be better?
    Take care.

Some people just don't know how to rate some stuff. If the program is in the HIPS category and that person doesn't like HIPS and wants to rant, then he/she is stupid. The comments should be on the same category, for example on the HIPS, does this one protect this? does this one detect this? Now for the screenies, they should put what is in the category, not a "my world, my word" junk.
