I downloaded this last night, but I've just tried to convert a DVD to avi, and it tells me I don't have the necessary mpeg plug-in. Have I downloaded from the wrong link, or is it necessary to buy the plug-in separately to use the conversion program?

  6. The DivX Converter requires an optional $9.99 MPEG-2/DVD Plug-in to convert MPG, VOB, TS and SVCD files to the DivX format.

    BuBBy,
Many thanks for the info. Does the Divx format give good results? I confess that I've found that Xvid tends to give a better quality conversion for me, but if this is an improved Divx codec, that difference may have disappeared now.

  8. I actually prefer Xvid myself.

Lee and Bubby .. doesn't DivX have a long and colorful (well, the vocabulary lessons are colorful) history of crashing Windows Explorer? Seems to me I remember making regedits to repair my last go-round with DivX. Perhaps it was just older versions?

  10. Yes it did have some problems back in 5.1 or 5.2 (rough guess) there were a few issues - one was an incompatibility when you had xVid and DivX both installed - you had to install xVid turning off an option to decode all FourCCs.

There was also a problem with DivX's ability to preview / thumbnail files and if you tried to bring up the context menu (right click) on a file or folder - explorer would keel over.

I think these happened shortly after the release of XP Service Pack 2 - and thanks to lots of user "feedback" the DivX developers fixed the problems in their code.

Luckily - I avoided it all because I only use Xvid. :)
