Tell me about it ladies. With respect to Reflexive arcade, I always though my purchases would be safe I purchased over 800 games from Reflexive. Amazon no longer supports registration of any of those games. Unfortunately the registration process only allows you to install to a particular set-up, which meant after a specific time I could no longer register any of those games (I purchased all of them at what was then the normal price for arcade games $19.99, so you can see how much i stood to lose. I was determined to do something about it so started searching for illegal registration generators. I don't particularity agree with such things but because Amazon wasn't willing to support all purchases from Reflexive after a certain time (I think it was about a year after the buy out) I was forced into a corner. After much searching I finally found a generator that worked on around 99% of my games. Now I can reinstall them whenever I want. It's just fortunate that I'd backed up copies of the executables otherwise over $16 thousand dollars worth of games (value at purchase) would have been lost.
Now it's happened again. Direct 2 Drive, formally part of the Fileplanet franchise sold Direct 2 Drive to Gamefly at the beginning of this year. We were forewarned and told to ensure we'd backed up all of our games because some of the earlier ones may not be held by Gamefly. That has certainly turned out to be true, with around 10 decent games (for example Marine Park empire, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 plus expansion, Thief 2, plus some Action games and R.T.S. games all disappeared. with no recompense.
This is what worries me about purchasing games digitally. If I was to lose my steam games sometime in the not too distant future due maybe to a shift in the way the community purchase games I'd stand to lose a good $30 thousand do9llars worth of games. It really scares me. I used to only buy hard copies, but started to run out of space, especially as I started to purchase movies as well. My study is choc full of game DVDs and movies with cupboards full to overflowing; which is why i didn't mind going digital. I always thought that if a company was bought out by another they also purchased the other companies responsibilities; in this case ensuring user who'd purchased games can still download when needed and register their games. at least get rid of the DRM when such things happen, but no, that's never considered. As always it's the honest gamer who spends a fortune on games that gets stung.
Sorry for the rant ladies. Just the mention of Reflexive made my blood boil, lol.
p.s. some may think I'm mad for spending so much money on games but those who are familiar with me know how much games help with pain management. Those of you who are in constant pain will understand why I'm willing to spend so much money on such things. Even a few hours of relief a day is worth the expense. :)
