Comment #37 of Saturday, November 7, 2009, Lazesoft Recover My Password

Apparently the mod don't know how exactly the wrapper system work. Since it's out there already, I'll explain (someone can delete this once that comment is deleted).

The post explains exactly where to find the file that the wrapper extracts to start the installation process. This greatly undermines the whole GAOTD system, as if someone wants to break away from the 24-hour activation limit, they can follow the instructions and change the file extension to the most common Windows extension ever. This kills the whole GAOTD system as the user can back up the installer and install it an unlimited amount of times, share it, do whatever with it. They will most likely not pay the developer because they have the software for free. Updates, maybe. But most programs' license keys work fine on future versions.

There you have it. A huge gaping hole is right under their nose. Of course, considering today's giveaway, it doesn't matter as the installer's contents are extracted anyways. But this will be a problem in future giveaways.

(I bet the guy knew this a long time ago...)

EDIT: Made link into something less obvious.

P. S.: I know the guy was trying to be helpful, but the mod really shouldn't have let this slip.

Installation & Introduction

This is the third in the Mysterious City series, and was released on the 31st July 09; so it’s a relatively new game. However in terms of Hidden Object games it’s already fairly old, with new ones being released almost every day. (Check out Big Fish Games HERE for a list of Hidden Object Games that is over 300 games long, that have been released over the last year). The download size is 50Mb, and once it’s installed the game is 53.6Mb in size.

Pack your bags and head for the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip in Mysterious City Vegas.

Your VIP suite awaits, but with unsolved crimes around every corner, you're here with a mission: Use your detective skills to uncover over 1000 hidden objects and apprehend a casino thief!

Clues abound as you stake out casino tables and opulent Vegas locations. Casino mini-games including cards, slots and bingo take you to the heart of the action...and help you earn extra points! Just be careful who you trust - the thief could be closer than you think in Mysterious City Vegas.

The Game:

When you first enter the game you can set it up by going into the options menu; here you can adjust the sound effects and music levels as well as change the aspect ratio to wide screen and windowed mode. There’s also a toggle to change the mouse cursor and turn the hints on or off. The main menu also has a gallery button where you can check to see what wallpapers you’ve unlocked, though at the start of the game this is inaccessible due to the lack of any wallpapers.

You can create multiple profiles in this game making it an ideal family game, though I wouldn't recommend it to the younger kids due to the Casino games. (Though that depends upon how you feel about your children playing games that could be considered gambling games). Once your profile is accepted you are asked if you want to play the game in relaxed mode. Accepting this doesn’t mean the game isn’t timed; on the contrary, the game is still timed, but you get three times the amount of time that you get if you decide to play the timed game. The relaxed mode gives you 134 minutes to complete the section and the timed mode 45 minutes.

If you select the relaxed mode you have plenty of time to complete all the levels within the first stage, the non seek and find puzzles are relatively easy to complete and leave you plenty of time to peruse the main hidden object puzzles. Even if you used the hint button to find all of the hidden objects, you still wouldn't run out of time because using a hint takes away only 2 minutes of your allocated time and if you make repeated attempts at clicking for objects but fail, you are supposed to lose 30 seconds, but I tried this several times and didn’t appear to lose any time.

There are 8 jigsaw puzzles (the sliding boxes type), 7 spot the difference puzzles, plus three types of casino games that includes Jacks or Better Poker, Slots Machine and Pingo. The game is split up into several sections; each section separated by a storyboard cartoon that tells you a very basic story about Dr Ellis and her visit to Vegas to apprehend some thieves who are ripping off the casino. Which I’m not going to elaborate on here – you can either discover the story as it unfolds in the game or check out my screen captures as I’ve taken screenshots of all the cartoon storyboards - see above. The game includes 16 wallpapers of scenes in and around Vegas (I've posted several below). These are awarded throughout the game once you've achieved specific targets; the first being awarded after completing the first two hidden object levels.

Each section of the game consists of a couple of the casino games mentioned above plus at least one jigsaw and one spot the difference level, the rest of the levels are hidden object levels which come in two forms; find the named object and find the shape. You may find you have to use a torch on some of the harder levels, which makes it much harder to spot the objects; also, if you use a hint, you'll have to look very carefully for the indicator as it doesn't stay for long.

Once you’ve played one of the casino levels you’ll see that it has been unlocked on the main menu page. This allows you to play that particular casino game whenever you want to. All three casino games are unlocked by stage 2 of the games.

Casino Games Help:

Jacks or Better:

Conclusion

My preparation for writing this review included reading the user reviews from gamers that had already played this game. I found that there was an overriding feeling that the game wasn’t very challenging and in some cases very boring. Playing it myself I'd partially agree with this, though I wouldn't call it boring. It really depends upon how much of a challenge you want from a game. Making it too hard can create frustration and leave a game unfinished, whereas being too easy enables you to complete the game in record time. Thankfully replaying already completed levels on a second re-run, you'll find the hidden objects are different ones, making this game replayable for at least a couple of times. The Casino games are easy to play and are also replayable because they rely upon a random generator There's no skill involved and are really just based on luck. I played them with little thought and actually finished most of the casino levels with lots of credits. The other mini games (spot the difference and jigsaws) were also too easy(IMO) The graphics are okay and the music works with this game * see below for information about changing the music.

Personally I think this game is okay for newcomers to this genre; those with lots of experience will find it too easy. I completed nearly 20 levels within the space of 2 half hour demos. The amazing thing was when I installed today's giveaway over the demo's I used to play this game, all my progress was saved which would lead me to believe that there is some record kept in the registry. This was confirmed when I copied the installed game onto one of my memory sticks and transferred it over to another computer. The profiles were gone, but the game worked perfectly as a full version, so this is a free standing game. If you are looking for a more challenging game, there are many recently released H.O.G’s that are superior to this game and which can be purchased cheaper (e.g. Big Fish Games); however, that said it is free for today and it does work okay.

The same formula has been uses in the preceding two games (Cairo and Prague), so those who downloaded them will be familiar with the layout and mini games from today’s game giveaway, (apart from the Casino games)

There’s really nothing wrong with this game apart from it being a little too easy, but that was based upon playing the relaxed mode. I didn’t have any time left after playing two separate demo’s of the game to play the timed mode, which probably would make this game more interesting. I’d score it the same as the previous HOG games that we’d been given, i.e. 7 out of 10. That includes points for the gorgeous wallpapers (some of them at least), and the re-playability of the game.

Other Information

Hidden Object games are still all the rage at the moment, evidenced by the fact that most game houses seem to be adding new HOG's almost daily, whereas there are hardly any free versions available (unless you're lucky enough to catch the game giveaway of the day). However I have found one free HOG, called Great Secrets Da Vinci which you can download from HERE . The following are screen captures from the game courtesy of Gametop:

N.B.:

Please note that Gametop are now rated yellow by McAfee Site Advisor, they do include checked tick boxes during installation, which if not unchecked will install toolbars into your browser an change your home page to Gametop. all this can be avoided by making sure you uncheck the appropriate boxes. also they do have pop ups so make sure your pop up blocker is turned on. Once you've done this the installed game is absolutely safe., though your browser will still be opened when you shut the game down; however, this is rectified by closing the browser down.

* You can change the games music by going into the music folder located within the main folder – there are six files, one for the menu one for the map and four for the levels. You’ll need to convert the files you are going to use (If you plan to change the music) into the .ogg format as well as change the names to the ones you are replacing. I'd advise backing up the ones your replacing just in case you wish to revert to the original game . There are several audio conversion tools available free from the freeware library which you can find HERE :)

Hope this helps some of you.

When you run this the initial install screen with question marks everywhere (??????) is actually a self extracting rar – just choose the directory that you want to extract to (or leave it to go to C: drive – Path by default: C:\PasswordRecovery as stated in the readme file) Then hit the bottom button on the left to extract the actual setup files, then navigate to that directory to install the real exe.

I guess the rar is somehow corrupted or some language pack issue.

Regards – Damian

P.S. BTW the download size is actually 32.1 MB (not 22.1).

Installation:

This is a first time giveaway thanks to Rake in Grass. Who’ve given us some excellent games in the past. Today’s download is a 24Mb zipped file which installs to about 26.7Mb. There is no shortcut installed so make a note of where the game is installed to. By default it installs to

C:\Games\CrystalCaveClassic

But if your cache hasn’t been cleared you may find it installing into the last game you installed from the giveaway project. You can clear you internet cache easily by right clicking on your internet icon (Internet explorer) and selecting Internet Properties. For firefox users you need to go to the toolbar within your internet browser.

Introduction:

Crystal Cave Classic is a quest for long-lost treasures buried in pitch black caves, pyramids and temples of ancient civilizations. Huge gemstones were sheltered from the sunshine for eons of time waiting for explorers brave enough to unearth them. You - as an intrepid treasure hunter - will need all your ingenuity to pass the traps and dangers of the underground and collect the treasure in more than 170 levels.

The Game:

Crystal Cave Classic is a very good remake of the original Crystal Caves by Apogee (which is still available for sale for around $5. It’s basically a very good boulder dash clone. The first video I’ve linked to below shows you a multitude od levels from the 170 strong level game, though if you’ve got the time and patience you can create many more levels of your own design by using the levels editor that’s packaged with the game. The graphics are nicely rendered, with colourful levels that allow you to use boulders, teleports, lifts, dynamite and other types of rock to solve the puzzle from each level. If you don’t like the music , which was specially made for this game you can use your own favourite music files. I’ve added more details about this at the end of the review.

The game is divided into seven chapters which include a tutorial chapter that contains 15 very useful levels, especially if you’ve never played a boulder dash style game before. The next six chapters include a first steps chapter then chapters dealing with specific regions of the world such as India, Egypt Japan and South America (the Aztecs). When you first boot up the game you are led through several cut scenes, which are basically layers images that are given the feeling of animation by selective zooming - a quick and easy way of giving the appearance of real animation. The intro sets the scene well IMO. You can select any of the chapters from the seven available, and any level from any of the chapters in any order you wish. you can also re-play any already played levels.

You can use either the keyboard cursor keys or the mouse to move your character. Boulders can only be pushed if there is nothing behind them. Arrows will sometimes point the way for you. You can zoom in or out of the playing arena if you wish. Access to the zoom controls is via the toolbar to the bottom left of the screen. To the bottom right is a quick load and quick save feature.

You can travel through sand but beware of boulders above you. If they are directly above you, you are safe as they will sit on your head, but if they drop from a greater height they can kill you. Breakable walls can be smashed by throwing something onto them for example a boulder or a beaker of acid. The aim of the game is to collect all the gemstones within a level; some gems may be found within walls, so will require smashing, others are found inside monsters, so you’ll need to use movable parts of the level to kill them before you can get the crystals. Monsters also explode and can be used to solve puzzles using this property. You can use dynamite when available to destroy pieces of breakable wall or to kill monsters. Dynamite will explode if you throw something onto it. You can also move dynamite.

To break iron walls you need to break the beakers containing acid. These are also moveable and can be broken by jumping on them. To overcome obstacles there are several tiles that you can use which include glass tiles which can be pushed into place then used to move other objects before smashing them by jumping on them. They will also break if you push them onto a wall. You can also use joker tiles which are movable in any direction and do not drop if you leave them suspended in air, but once they are placed against a wall you cannot move them away from it only up and down or left and right (depending upon whether it’s a side wall or a top or bottom wall) Joker tiles are especially useful for clogging up gaps in floors that would otherwise trap boulders. The elevator tiles are there to help you transport any movable object to a higher level in order to overcome obstacles. You just have to push the object onto the elevator. Other special tiles include the eight ball tile and the flip tile (which flips the whole level upside down), which is very useful for breaking walls that have boulders beneath them.

You can see all of the above tiles in action via the first ‘tutorial’ chapter which has 15 levels. If you’ve never played boulder dash before these tutorials will give you a good grounding in the mechanics of the game.

Video & Images:

Pictures and more so video are better than thousands of words. Here are some You Tube videos of the game plus images from in game:

You can see the introduction to the game plus a cameo of many levels HERE

plus four more videos that include an Egyptian level HERE , an Indian level HERE an Aztec level HERE and a Japanese level HERE.

There’s actually over 8 pages full of Crystal Cave Classic videos covering just about every level available, so if you get stuck you’ve got access to video walkthroughs of most of the levels HERE . You can also access all the video walkthroughs over at Rake in grass. They have created a page specially for the walkthroughs. There’s only one level missing a video which is level 27 in the second Japanese chapter. You can find them HERE.

You can see all the images of the game on one page HERE or as a slide show HERE. I have posted images in the game discussion forums, which give a better idea as to what the game looks like while you are reading the review.

Conclusion:

Overall this is a very enjoyable and good looking puzzle game. There’s lots of variety and to cap it off there’s a levels editor that will enable you to create your own levels. There’s no tutorial on how to use the editor, but I found it easy to use. If you’ve never played boulder dash games of which this is one (not sure which came first any more boulder dash or crystal caves) the first chapter gives you a very good tutorial. Definitely worth an 8 out of 10 for family fun and puzzle solving.

Other information:

Alternative Games for free:

You can download 28 different full version Boulder Dash games for free
HERE , and include such titles as Crypt Raider, Rockfall 2, Boulder Rush, Hamster Jam and Rocks ‘n’ Diamonds. We’ve posted several of these games in the free games for the weekend project over the last year. I don’t think any of them approach the quality of Rake in Grass’s game, but they are well worth downloading if you like this genre of game.

You’ll also find a few related games in the Maze section, for example, The Nameless, Ultimate Burger Hunt, The Dungeons of Grimlor 2 series, Ghost Boy and Push-Push Penguin.

HERE.

Changing In game Music:

You can change the in game music by replacing the ogg file . There are several music files that you can swap for music that you really like. By default it should be installed along the following path for both XP and vista (I’ve not purchased Win 7 yet – not going to until the first service pack has been released)

C:\Program files\ Crystal Cave Classic\data\music

You’ll find several audio converters in the giveaway freeware library HEREthese will enable you to convert any MP3's (or other formats) you would like to exchange for the present in game music. IMO, music that you like can enhance the gaming experience.

I was unable to log back into my admin account earlier this afternoon. It kept saying my password was incorrect, so I applied for a new password. That was two hours ago and there's no sign of it in my email box. Until I do get a password I will be unable to moderate the game comments section.

If you do have prblems please post them in the thread I started earlier today. Hopefullyt his problem will be resolved at some point today. There is another moderator who does moderate every several hours or so, so hopefully if you've already posted a comment that's not showing, it will do so sometime later today.

I'm sorry for the bother. I think it was an error on my part that led to me losing my access.

Hopefully I'll be back soon. (Dependent upon me getting the email with the new password)

I see comments over and over complaining about games that don't work under Vista (and now 7). Most of the complaints refer to the games offered here. I have a few observations to make.

1) I have had Vista for over 2.5 years. In that time, over 95% of the games I had before worked with no trouble. A few need DOSBox (now that I have that), a few need a compatibility mode and a few need to run as administrator. VERY few were actually lost.

2) Just about all games that are developed now ARE designed to run with Vista (and now 7).

3) Everybody's system is configured differently. Even if two people got IDENTICAL systems at the same time, within a few weeks, they would be different (if not sooner). Settings for various software as well as levels of the software and even hardware drivers will affect what works and doesn't work in any given way. There are very few games offered here that universally fail for any given operating system. Most work for some but not for others.

4) I mentioned that new games are compatible with Visa and 7. That being said, we cannot expect NEW games for free. Except in rare cases like TellTale (and those games don't work right for me), new games are NOT free. We cannot expect the majority of the games offered here or elsewhere for free to be Vista compatibility. Most are simply too old.

Conclusion - Any game you find may require a bit of work to get to run and even may require working with the developer. However, there is a very very good chance that it will work. No guarantee, but a very good probability.

Now, having said all this - the games we are being offered are free. Accept and work with what we have and quit griping!

Just as a final note - I was one of the lucky ones. Today's game, Trick Ball, worked like a charm from the starting gate. No compatibility settings or changes at all. I just have to move the shortcut group it made (it didn't ask me where to put it).

Generally it received a lot of complaints mainly due to problems with getting the game to work. It should work on Vista even though the recommended system specifications don’t mention it. (The game was released pre Vista) Fixes included changing the screen resolution and selecting Open GL instead of D3D, (or maybe the other way around) You can find the appropriate buttons to change the video mode in the options menu as well as the ability to change the screen mode and color quality (i.e. 16 or 32 bit), the latter appears to be set on the lowest color quality which most computers today should easily cope with the higher 32 bit rate. It works in both settings for me. You will definitely have Direct X installed, but you may need to install a free copy of OpenGL if the game won’t work.

If neither of the fixes work that I mention above, try updating your DirectX files. You can do so HERE

If you are running XP choose DX9.0c, Vista use DX10 and for Win 7 use DX11.

Introduction:

The following is what the distributor/developer says on their website about the game:

Did you enjoy pool, bowling, pinball and arkanoid? Play Trick Ball and have it all!

You strike the balls and marbles of all colors with your player's disk to match them and to remove them from the board! Different levels have different physics - different tiles and backgrounds move the balls and marbles in special ways - make them speed up, slow down, explode.

Each action you do costs you the points - such as move of your player's disk - or brings you the bonus points - such as destroying the ball or marble.

The Game

The aim of this game is to remove all the colored marbles from the playing arena either by pushing two of the same colored marbles together, or to push single marbles out of the playing arena through a black and white checked grid or by breaking through the wall of bricks that surround the playing arena; though some marbles are fixed so can only be eliminated by making another marble of the same color collide with it. The marble used to move the colored marbles looks different and can be made to move at speed or slower by adjusting the power rating. This can be seen when you keep the left mouse button depressed; (white with an arrow). To hit a marble with the players ‘cue’ ball move the mouse cursor in the direction you wish the ball to move. There are several types of tiles that can affect the outcome of your shot:

Tiles & Holes:

Turbo……………….…....Kicks the ball faster (speed up)
Plasma……………….…..Glues the ball on the spot (slow down)
Bomb Wall………………Explodes when hit hard
Strong bomb……………..Explodes when hit even harder (lol)
Moving Wall…………….Moves when hit by the cue ball or marbles
Random Accelerator…….Kicks the marble in random directions
Black hole……………….Holds and destroys any marble
One color hole…………...Holds and destroys all marbles of the same color
Mysterious hole………….Holds nd destroys only one marble then disappears

Controls:

Mouse ………………...…Moves the cursor
Left Mouse Button……….Controls the power of the Strike
Esc……………………….Main Menu

The shooter bounces off some of the tiles on the side, others have to broken. There’s arrows that direct either the balls or the shooter in the direction they point and can trap the shooter if you don’t eliminate balls in the correct order.

A secondary aim of this game is to score points. You can score points by kicking marbles from the playing arena or eliminating a marble by hitting it with another marble of the same color. Your score can be decreased by every strike you make, so it is important to try and remove the colored marbles from the playing arena in as few strikes as possible. You can also lose points if the cue ball flies off the playing arena. You can upload your scores to an online table if you wish or just keep the scores to your computer.

Apart from accessing the main menu via the escape key the game is controlled fully by the mouse. The first eight levels are tutorial levels and the rest which number more than 50 levels can be played in any order you wish. You can find the rules and other useful information via the help button found in the main menu. There you'll find details of the different bricks you will find in game as well as how to play the game and how to score points. The game is free standing which means you can play it from a flash drive (memory stick) or transfer it between your computers.

• OpenGL

You can download OpenGL HERE

Conclusion:

Overall this is an excellent 'time waster'. It’s one of those games you can pick up and play for just a few moments or play till you drop. It’s easy to play, with only a few simple rules to follow and (IMO) has quite a lot of re-playability. I like the ability to select any of the levels you have. The graphics are okay. The only thing I think this game is lacking is a levels editor.

I think it’s worth a reasonable 7 out of 10 for an all round game for the family.

Other information:

Alternative Games for free:

The game is related to pool and very loosely related to breakout games so if you’re looking for these types of games you can find at least 10 excellent free arkanoids that includes Nuclear Ball (A-Ball) and Twixoid (Geometry Ball) as well as Gem Ball (which was made by the same developer as Nuclear Ball) at Gametop The names in Brackets are the names Gametop have changed the original names to for licensing purposes. You can also find a free pool game . Rather than link to each game I’ve just posted the home page. You can easily find the games you want HERE. You'll also find related games within the giveaway forums either via the free games synopsis or arkanoid threads HERE and HERE

Please be aware that during installation of most of the games from Gametop you need to uncheck the boxes for the installation of toolbars and changing your home page. It’s a simple matter. Once installed you get the full version game with no adverts. Your browser will open to Gametop when the game is closed down, but once you close the window; that’s it.

Changing the 'in game' Music:

You can change the in game music by replacing the ogg file (called Music1) which is found within the installed games folder. By default it should be installed along the following path in XP:

C:\Program files\Trick Ball\game\client\music

You’ll find several audio converters in the giveaway freeware library HERE; these will enable you to convert any MP3's you would like to exchange for the present in game music. IMO, music that you like can enhance the gaming experience.

I happen to live in Arizona,we don't change to daylight savings time. So everytime I vist the website, I must wait an extra hour or two before it will let me test the software. Not a hugh problem, but I do like to download before I go to sleep. This way I can properly test the next day and provide my feedback.

Seems this was working correctly last year.

Just thought you would want to know and thanks for all of the great opportunities you provide.

Bollen is a fun but difficult platformer. The goal is to reach the red flag at the end of each level. The problem is that you can't jump unless you touch either the green ghost creature or a jumppad. You can also switch to fullscreen from the settings menu.

The latest game from the swedish indie-developer Monokey. Bollen (means 'the ball' in swedish) is a cute puzzle/platformer with nice pixeled graphics and very nice oldskool-type music. The goal of the game is to lead Bollen to the red flag. There're enemies (and friends too) on the way however. Bollen can only move left and right and must use the green ghosts or the jumpblocks in order to get to higher places. Collect 25 coins for an extra life and collect the golden cup on all levels to unlock the secret extra stages. Try it out!
