Hi All,

Could anyone recommend a good e-mail recovery program that is preferably free. I have found this one http://undelete-all.com/related/english/email/?gclid=CI2C__jyxJUCFQEq1AodmD_xig&hit=1&adurl=39 it can find deleted e-mails but to recover them, you have to upgrade to the Pro version at a cost of $65.95 although untill 05/09 it's $49.95

Thanks,
Carol.

Johnny Appleseed nearly dropped his seed pouch when he stumbled across this late breaking news...

According to MegaLeecher, starting 09/07/2008, GoDaddy's offering all you wannabe webmeisters a very limited time promo chance to register a custom domain for the remarkably low price of $1.19 for a whole year.

Granted, GoDaddy's toll call only customer service can be a costly pain for novices, and they do try to sell you everything but the kitchen sink when you're visiting their site, but if you keep your eyes on the prize, it ain't a bad deal. Now, you'll be able to use all the nifty freeware GAOTD offers to create your own homepage and become famous like every other one of the 14.7 billion web site owners out there. Think of it as a cheap lottery ticket... pick the right domain name and some rich and powerful conglomerate might offer to buy it from you. You wouldn't believe what some lucky stiffs have gotten for their domains.

Introduction:

Most community members will be fully aware of what’s involved and how to play a match three or more game, so I’m not going to go into great detail about the mechanics of this game. The download is quite large for an arcade game at just over 38Mb (though it’s miniscule compared too many DVD based games that are available now). Once installed it is just over 55Mb in size.

Quote:

You only have 80 days to circumnavigate the globe. Think that sounds easy? Travel back in time to the late 19th century and get ready for spectacular adventures on land, sea and air together with the English daredevil Phileas Fogg and his loyal French servant Passepourtout. Use the unique chance to visit four continents and complete the inconceivable journey in this outstanding puzzler based on the classic adventure novel by Jules Verne.

.

Reference: http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/2758/around-the-world-in-80-days/index.html?afcode=aff2fe81434f Accessed 6th Sept 08

The Game:

Apparently (I’ve read somewhere) this is an upgrade (from Playrix) of The Rise of Atlantis, another game that we have been given previously via the giveaway project. After playing several levels, I do agree that the game is very similar, and that it does have some improvements over its predecessor; though you’ll need to play both to be able to see the differences (apart from the obvious graphical differences).

I much prefer the way this games storyline unfolds. It sticks to the original by Jules Verne apart from the American leg of the journey which isn’t true to the original story. The graphics are gorgeous and the music okay. It’s classical in nature and works well with the overall feel of the game. Overall, I think the majority are going to be pleased with the game play despite it being a match three game. (check out the list of freebies at the end of the review)

You can access the options menu as well as the help menu and high scores from the games main menu. The options menu enables you to adjust the music as well as toggle between full screen and windowed mode. There’s also a toggle to switch between your default mouse pointer and a custom pointer and another to turn on or off the in game tips.

The game is fully mouse controlled, with only the keyboard required to input your profile name.

The game play follows closely that of Rise of Atlantis, including having to move broken artifacts to the bottom of the playing field (most o the time) to complete the level; though the storyline (as is obvious from the title of the game) is based around Jules Verne’s story as opposed to Atlantis. You earn power ups by creating matches of four or more. You can see what power ups are available from the help menu, and include (Amongst others) bombs, extra lives, time and points. Some of the power ups are upgradeable as well. The first one to become available when you’ve created enough matches of four or more is the hammer which you can use to knock out either one tile, unlock a lock or unfreeze a tile. As you create more matches this is upgraded to a super hammer which destroys all tiles of the same color; further upgrades include a bomb and a super bomb. This ability to upgrade power ups reminds me of Treasures of Montezuma and Sky bubbles Deluxe a little, though it’s in a much more limited way than those two games. As you progress some of the more advanced levels require specific power ups to survive the level; (unfortunately I haven’t got that far yet, so can’t elaborate). There are also bonus levels at the end of each country, where you have to uncover a stamp by clearing away the Golden tiles (which is proof that Fogg has visited that particular country) . An additional bonus with this game is the free screensaver, which is the very same screensaver that was given away back in June called Around the World: London. It appears that there are another six to unlock, but after reading other reviews, it maybe that only the first one, which is unlocked when you first open the game, is a screensaver. I think the rest may be wall papers. I hope I’m wrong though, because I like the Around the World screensavers that Astro Gemini sell for around $20 each :)

System Requirements:

The first link is my video, which covers the introductory story and the initial dialogue between Phileas Fogg and his valet Passepourtout as well as the first level of the game, though because I had problems capturing any video using the commercial version, I used the online version which although the same game does have a couple of slight differences to the menu buttons. The second and third links takes you to Reflexive and Big Fish Games (BFG) respectively. Both these video’s are worth watching, especially the Reflexive video. You’ll need to click on the video button once you’ve been taken to either of Reflexive’s or BFG’s web pages. The third video, posted on You Tube is very poor quality, but still conveys a reasonable impression of the game. I’ve also taken over 50 screen captures of the early stages of this dialogue and log book, as well as of the initial stages of the game:

Conclusion:

Despite a preponderance of match three puzzles that abound these days, this is definitely one of the better ones (IMO). It’s got all the ingredients to make it a pleasure to play, including the storyline, which doesn’t interfere with game play because you can easily click on a button to pass it by quickly. I’m not a big fan of match three puzzles, (apart from Treasures of Montezuma and Sky Bubbles Deluxe), but I do think this is one of those you’ll find hard to put down once you’ve started to play. So I think it’s worth a good 8 out of 10 despite not being an original idea. The latter levels are very hard, especially the last ones where you have to move objects sideways rather than downwards. I would have preferred the power ups to be cumulative from level to level, but instead, you have to recharge them each time you start a new level.

Other Stuff:

The following link takes you to a free online version of Around the World in 80 Days; so if you missed today’s giveaway you can still play the game.

Free Online Version:

http://games.skunkstudios.com/games/show_web_game/1080

Free ‘commercial’ Games:

Also if you like this genre there’s two or three similar games available for free from both the Game top and Freegamepick sites. As always I should remind you that games from these two sites do open up your browser when you close the game down, though it isn’t redirected. You just have to click on the x to close it down. I’ve checked all the games from both sites with F-Secure and PCGuard and found no viri or malware attached to any of the files. Gametop have recently introduced more advertising which kicks in whenever you click on a game (while on the website); though you can bypass the advert. It just means a few more mouse clicks and an extra 10 or so seconds wasted before you can download your totally free commercially available game. There are a growing number of match three games now available from these sites. I’ve starred the ones I think are the better ones. You can find the following free commercial match three or more games:

Music:

All the music is in the ogg format, so you will need to convert any music you wish to use into that format before exchanging the files found in the following folder. You can download a free audio converter from the freeware section of the giveaway project. There are two or three in the audio converters section. You must rename any track you change to the one you’re exchanging. I’d keep a back up of the ones you are removing just in case there’s any problems.

C:\........\Around the World in 80 Days\Base\Sound\Music

While searching for a You Tube video of the game (so as to save me some time preparing one myself I came across an interesting Google Earth video called Around the World in 8 minutes (though it’s actually 8 mins 58 sec). It’s nothing to do with the game, but as it’s sort of related, I thought I’d post it with the review.

My observations and thoughts on helping keep the Giveawayoftheday website a pleasant place to do business.

I was peering at the comments page made for this past week on the day that there was no Giveawayoftheday offer. Several thing struck me while I was reading the comments. First off, it appeared that those posting comments were on the whole nicer than the ones that post comments on the day-to-day comment page. I have noticed this friendlier approach when we have had circumstances that for one reason or another, have lead to no offer being made available on a given day. Are there ways it is peace and goodwill toward men, attitude be captured and woven in to other parts of the website? I think so and I have a few ideas on how to do that. I am not going to list those ideas tonight. I hope that everyone that reads this will give some thought to that question and observation - how to establish a friendlier atmosphere!

I see no particular reason to be a stickler for rules when it comes to the offers on this website. No one pays much attention to the rules when to do otherwise better suits what they want to do and say. So let us come up with a list of circumstances that will permit suspending the rules temporarily - a list generally acceptable to reasonable men and women. Again, I am not going to propose a list tonight. I will mention though, one suggested instance for rule suspension in the paragraphs immediately below. I would ask the others of you to consider what circumstances you would like to see on such a list. Also I would ask you to comment on the advisability of requesting additional moderators with or without a rotational schedule so that no one gets burned out or rises in power to become a tyrant. You know, as I think back to that part about becoming a tyrant - I doubt anyone that we would choose to become a moderator would ever think of abusing his power. I would like to quickly add that editing a comment in part or in whole is not tyrannical behavior. .

Concerning extending a giveaway time period beyond the normal one day limit, it seems quite reasonable if no new offer is going to be made available for that day. There are other circumstances that should justify suspending the 24 hour time limit on downloading Givawayoftheday promotions. Perhaps not all software authors would agree to this, but I bet many would and some might even add a bonus giveaway to go along with the original promotion.

I hope I do not come across as being "holier than thou" because that is not at all like I feel. I enjoy reading the comments that many of the regular Giveawayoftheday website visitors make. I would like there to be a place where others y'all for I do can go and enjoy ourselves as we experience a feeling of community.

I really do not expect those responsible for the Giveawayoftheday website to go out of their way to set up anything special. We the community can do that. I would ask that the Giveawayoftheday folks make some effort to respond occasionally, in some outward way, to the comments and suggestions made by responsible website visitors.

What say you?

Bigun

I can use only one hand to type. Because of that I use a dictation program, Dragon Naturally Speaking. The program often continues to scan a document, and may make changes on its own in the text after it has been finalized by me.

The message has come from the top and is beginning to percolate. "Windows Vista is great, just misunderstood," Redmond

says. "Apple has twisted the facts and mislead gullible users, and analysts that criticize Windows Vista are either crazy

or unreliable. Who can you trust? Microsoft."

The latest manifestation in this unfolding campaign is the Mojave Experiment, where Microsoft tricked ordinary people into

liking Windows Vista, caught their reactions on "secret" camera and then posted them online.

Strong warning from AVG 8 concerning a program file mentioned in today's comment section (download offer today is "ShellLess Explorer" - for 06 Sep - 07 Sep 2008). AVG identified a virus in my Internet Temporary File and blocked any type of operation on the file when I attempted to download this file (VideoCat).

AVG 8 gave me an "I-Worm" warning when I started to download. When I said ignore the warning" (I was running a virtual partition using Returnil) I was not allowed to download the program - no matter what I said or did.

I hated to post an unsubstantiated alarm but I have little choice on this file. It may not seem fair to the author but I would be negligent if I said nothing and it turned out that a virus was being introduced. I have a limited amount of time on the computer tonight. I wanted to submit the program to a multi anti-virus scan website but I could not download or copy the program file.

The program file is called "VideoCat" ( http://www.gtoal.com/src/videocat/ ). It was mentioned by commenter #115, "G", who claims authorship.

I don't know if the AVG warning is correct or not. If someone has some time and wants to chase this down, go to it. I can't fool with this tonight.\

i DL'd Golden Prague last week, played it & finished it. as i am trying to save space on my computer until i can get a new one i am deleting all games i have finished & probably won't play again. HOWEVER when i went to uninstall this game it wasn't in my add/remove programs or my Crap Cleaner uninstaller. SO i tried just going in & deleting the folder. it takes about 3 mins of thinking & then decides that i am not allowed to delete the folder. it says i don't have permission.

any tips on how to get rid of this game? it was fun while it lasted but now....lol

I'm about to show my age here, but this one brought back memories. EA is offering a free download of Command and Conquer: Red Alert. Even after 13 years it is still a great game. I love playing these old games I used to play many moons ago.

http://www.ea.com/redalert/news-detail.jsp?id=62

Each Disk is a 500MB download so it will take a while. You only really need one or the other to play, but if you can why not get both? You will also need a CD burner to create the CDs for play.

Hello All,

I was wondering if any of you knew of a way to take slides (like the kind you use in a slide projector) and convert them to digital pictures? Just scanning them does not seem to be doing it for me. The images are dark and quite pixely. I have thought about getting a slide projector and shining them on a wall and then using our digital camera to then take a picture of them. I was just hoping of an easier way of doing it. So any help would be appreciated.

Quick Review:

Introduction:

The download size is only 6.98Mb and once installed will take up only 8.63Mb of disc space. There were no problems installing the game. You’ll find the usual ‘separate’ activation and setup modules.

The Game

This is a very simple game where you have to create stable towers by shuffling numbered blocks around. You are competing against the computer. There are simple instructions provided which are accessible via the main menu; these instructions are animated so tke some time to read and watch each page. You can play any level by selecting the practice mode or go straight into the game proper and select Quest.

The options menu is found at the top right hand part of the screen. In the form of buttons. These are self explanatory. You can adjust the music

You select from a given number or one that’s unknown. You can replace any of the tiles on your pile with the one that’s presented, or, if it’s not suitable choose the unknown one. If neither of the numbers are useful you can opt to miss your turn and hope to get a better number, or use the ones provided initially. If the number you can see is larger than the one on top of the pile go for the unknown number. If this is shown to be higher as well you can either discard your turn and try again or use the number provided. The aim is to build as stable a tower as possible. The one who creates the most stable tower that starts with a high number at the bottom and successively lower numbers above wins the game.

The game is fully mouse controlled.

Images

As a slideshow:

http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/Monkeys%20Tower/?albumview=slideshow

Googled:

http://images.google.co.uk/images?um=1&hl=en&q=monkey%27s+tower+game&btnG=Search+Images

Conclusion:

A very simple game, that’s nicely rendered in a cartoon style with 25 levels of Monkey mayhem (lol). Not my type of game, but comparing it to similar games ( we got one similar from double games last summer, but I can’t remember the name of the game) it’s well made. I can’t really score today’s game because I’m biased against it. It’s a great game for teaching your children number sequences.

Thank you Gambana games and the game giveaway team for another new game. :)

p.s.

I’ve made a video, but can’t find the video converter I used last week to convert my Camtasia file to FLV, so that I can upload it to You tube. I’ll post it later if I can.

I'm not sure whether there a specific thread for Wallpapers, though I'm sure I’ve seen links to the odd download site. With today’s game giveaway having the ability to add more images I thought it would be a great idea to create this thread so that you can all post your favorite links to wallpaper sites. My first one is called Digital Blasphemy. You have to pay for most of the images from this site, but there is a free section that has some excellent fantasy imagery based on real life settings (well almost). I do have links to several other sites, but not on this computer, so when I get the opportunity I will be posting them here. If you go to Google Earth you’ll find loads of links to individuals own libraries of images; for example, I found a site while looking at images people had posted of the Grand Canyon region. (I love geology, so the Grand Canyon is on my list of places to visit before I die)

If you don’t have MacAfee’s site advisor installed do be careful though as I clicked on one site called Desktopia which kept redirecting me to other sites, and others to risqué sites. Another way to find good images is to use the image search engines. You can specify a particular size so that it filters out the smaller images. Most images can either be copied to the computer or captured using a screen capture tool (there’s a freeware one in the freeware library)

Digital Blasphemy:

I've been looking for a really superb aquarium screensaver for a long time. In previous years I have seen some that were excellent - but they all seem to have disappeared. One screensaver that I saw approximately year ago allowed you to feed the fish, change the time of day for various scenes, control the number of and types of fish and other sea creatures and make a number of changes to the sea floor itself.

I mainly want to use the screensaver for my own quiet thoughts and meditation. It is irrelevant if it saves anything or not. In fact, I don't care if it uses more CPU cycles than it saves - its effect on pixel lifetime is of no consequence.

Can't think of anything else that might apply.

Just to let anyone know who is a Saqqarah fan....the SaqPak was released today and is available for $9.95 (US), at www.saqqarahthegame.com and www.gameclubcafe.com. I don't know whether Big Fish will be offering the SaqPak, but I downloaded it from the Saqqarah the game site and it downloaded into the game with no problem. You have to create a new profile to activate the Pak, so be careful or you could lose all of your levels completed under your own name on the original game...oh no! Enjoy ;)

Whiterabbit-uk on "Mercenaries 2"

I took delivery of a new game called Mercenaries 2 yesterday after pre-ordering it a few weeks ago. I'd actually totally forgotten about it because I only ordered it on a whim due to being involved with a Battlefield 2 mod called Mercenaries.

Anyway, it's turned out to be one of the most fun games I've bought in ages. The nearest I can compare the game to is a cross between Battlefield and Grand Theft Auto. With a destructible environment, the ability to call in air strikes, drive any vehicle that’s available including civilian and military vehicles. Take on contracts that pay you cash or in equipment. Steal cash and equipment, collect parts to build custom vehicles as well as loads of other stuff, for example if you hit a civilian, either by gunfire or by hitting them with a vehicle you have to pay recompense to their family for killing them. Something I've never seen in a game of this type before. It's a really fun game to play and it looks good as well. You start the game with a choice of several characters, each one with it's own foibles. The dialogue is funny at times and so far I've not come across any bad language. The following are some screen captures of the first few stages of the game:

http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/forums/mercenaries%202/?albumview=slideshow

I've played it for several hours and have only completed 1% of the game. The way it's set up there seems to be many ways to play the game and therefore it's got almost unlimited game play. When the demo is available I'd definitely check it out if you are into any sort of shooting or driving game. The game doesn't come up to the standards of Crysis or COD4, but then it's considered a budget title at least 20% cheaper than the ones I just mentioned above.

Okay, it's not a free game, but then, you'll not get a game of this quality for free unless you play America's Army and possible the online element to F.E.A.R. The former is at least a 2Gb download and you can only play online with both games. Mercenaries has an online option that works seamlessly with the single player option. You can set up a coop server and allow someone to join you to help in your campaign, or you can join someone else’s server. It's not like your usual online games where you can have upwards of 64 players online playing in the same battlefield (and apparently thousands in one of the strategy games called Warhammer). What you earn in the online campaign is carried through to the single player campaign.

Oh yeah I nearly forgot. The game is in the third person perspective.

The following is the introduction that EA give to the game:

Quote:

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames™ is an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world. When a power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply he sparks an invasion that turns the country into a warzone. But for you, international crisis is all upside: You are a mercenary, and you profit from chaos. Mercenaries 2™ features a slew of potential clients, all willing to pay you to do their dirty work. These are world powers with deep pockets, deep grudges, and enough arms and ammo to start World War III. This is your kind of environment. Mercenaries 2 features the latest and most dangerous in civilian and military tech, everything from shiny new sports cars, to the future-tech satellite-guided bunker-busting mini-nuke. Tanks, APCs, boats, luxury automobiles - you name it, you can have it delivered to you in real time. And if you run out of cash you can always 'acquire' the gear you need in the field. If you see it, you can buy it, steal it, or obliterate it. Play your own way, or play with the help of a friend in the new co-op multiplayer mode. You are not a soldier. You don't have to play by anyone's rules. You have your own code: you will fulfill the terms of the contract, no matter what. Not everyone in the world of Mercenaries is as honorable. Everyone will try and screw you, given the chance. They think they can get away with it, but they don't know rule #1 for mercenaries: EVERYBODY PAYS.

Looks like I didn't register my copy of Tray Commander properly because a reminder to register popped up today, 6 days after it was given away. Has anyone else had this problem. I could have sworn I checked to see that it was registered as I usually do with any software I decide to try out.

I was wondering if any of you know of a free program that allows you to write down your own music? I have a few songs that I have come up with and I would like to be able to write them down and print them out.

Allez !

>>> http://www.latribune.fr/info/USA--une-femme-reste-assise-sur-ses-toilettes-pendant-deux-ans-592-~-AP-USA-KANSAS-FEMME-TOILETTES-$Db=News/News.nsf-$RSS=1

>>> http://www.dhnet.be/infos/faits-divers/article/201629/assise-deux-ans-sur-la-cuvette-de-ses-toilettes.html

Amicalement.

Je tire la "chasse" .... de Champagne... Au suivant ?

Stef.
