A good system would be to make people register before they're able to download anything, and then e-mail whenever this person downloads a giveaway. This would enable them to reactivate after a system reinstall, but it wouldn't change anything about the giveaway policy. Registration would simplify the e-mailing process (so they just have to log in).

I got Reg code only with the 1st I downloaded & installed. Nothing after wards except the pop-up "Activated".

Ifeared that it will be for 1 time free. as I restored my system to a previous date the SW after that date had gone & I could not get those except "Trial for .. days"

Some arrangements be made for a permanent GIFT to the downloader; register each time he downloads, he should get it by mail or on Activation.

Just a note:
>7. fill in YOUR NAME in the correct dialog box
Most of the time we ask vendors to use common Giveawayoftheday regname for reginfo. Of course, that's program-dependent, sometimes you can use your own.

I agree with cpedley, I haven't been at computers for 30 years as cp, but over 10 and have enough know how to install I would think. The same fact remains for me, I don't always get an activation code, correct files, instructions, etc...and not to drudge anything up but I ranted about TRIALWARE because if this is FREE, like any other FREEWARE, I should be able to reinstall\uninstall at my disposal, not a 1 time install. This is not the case with this FREEWARE as previously discussed. The age old argument, "it's free, what are you complaining about?" Well, very simply put, if you are told something is FREE, it should be so and not waste peoples time.

I have quite a collection of free and bought software, if it's good enough, I buy it and never have I had such issues with attempting to keep my FREEWARE, FREE. I have never had to backup my drive, registry, just to keep a freeware free. Which didn't work for Notables anyway since it must access the internet FIRST before the installer will run. So even though I backed up the registry, did a restore, etc...after uninstalling, still couldn't install it again. Is that truly FREE?

And I agree, this method is going to make many mad. Activation only works for some, games only work for some, installs only work for some. I think it will ultimately turn many people away as they will get tired of going through this. Another argument I hear, "well, you wouldn't normally get to try it" yes, true but even some new programs offer trials, almost any offer trials so where is the difference if you can't re-use\uninstall\reinstall the Giveaway?

That said, I do appreciate what they are trying to do here but I seriously think a new system needs implementing. This has the potential to be one of the best freeware\trial places out there and I think the crew is doing a wonderful job with the exception of clarity with this freeware. Whether it be on GAOTD's end or the sponsored software, it needs to be more straight forward, get it free but send a key through e-mail and have people register on this site\software provider site. This way, we know it's free, no one gets mad, no one has to try and figure out this maze of activation and installation and all are happy. With the exception of those who will never be happy but that's on any site. I think it's great here and like I said, I think what the GAOTD team is doing is absolutely wonderful but there are some quirky things here. All things considered, this is fast becoming my favorite place and hope these kinks get ironed out.

Thanks GAOTD team, and I mean no offense, just my opinion.

Paul

But this DOES NOT APPLY to most software I have tried to activate!
There are 3 files, readme, setup and activate. Don't recall ever being sent to a website to register.
