It's a common practice for companies asking people to vote for a nomination or to get a positive rating, but yes...this appears to be beyond proportions.
And it probably has the opposite effect on a lotta people anyway, because it looks obvious something's fishy about the rating, let alone assuming it's being tampered with.
Then again people in different countries might think differently.

But the program is pretty good...

Cynically, I believe another motive they might have - by trying to make their software appear that most users love it, they will be asked back more frequently onto GOTD (if it worked like that).

However, as with the users, I am sure the GOTD team are aware of such tactics also. Anyone who is paying attention can see what has happened.

You only have to look back at 10 or 20 past giveaways to get an idea of the typical proportions and the total number of votes each days giveaway attracts (or giveaways involving rippers/converters in general). When you consider that these "typical totals" were exceeded in the first hour or two of the giveaway, shows that they were not increasing at a typical rate - or in proportion between yes and no votes that we usually see. To have 1000+ yes votes, and 30 no votes only demonstrates that the voting isn't being carried out by 1030 different users.

Secondly the (automated?) rapid jump to 1000+ yes votes in the first couple of hours - and then to see it almost completely drop off (currently 15 hours into the giveaway), combined with download levels/per yes vote during those first 1000 votes - was at a record low compared to usual.

So compared to past giveaways - there were a lot of people voting "yes" but that didn't convert into a typical ratio of people downloading the giveaways. Go Figure.

For me, such tactics are nothing more than a time waster, because I pay no attention to the voting in considering the merits of the software - but it does show in a bad way, the voter(s) who are trying so hard to make aiseesoft products look as popular as they can. Problem is they try so hard - it just looks totally fraudulent.

Here we are again.

The software of this developer seems to be really bad.
They are faking the comments and the ratings every time they get the chance to present their programmes here, a company with confidence in their products doesn’t need such fishy tricks.
Aiseesoft, the users are not as silly as you think they are.
GOTD should ban such scammers.

Just look at the ratings of Aiseesoft in the past and at the WOT scorecard.

WOT may not be perfect, but when you take the time to look at the ratings in more detail, you'll get a good picture of the companies.

I started using the Spotmau products about four years ago. I believe that the company made their debut with a collection of utilities sold under the title of "PC Beginner". After purchasing the product I downloaded the image file and burned a bootup disk that contained all of utilities. The only thing wrong with that program collection was that the title turned out to be a misnomer. The collection is anything but for a beginner. All of the programs work well but documentation is almost nonexistent and the directory structure requires an advanced level of expertise to navigate. I continue to use programs included with the original collection of utilities several times a week.

In the fall of 2007 I purchased the second product produced by Spotmau. The product consists of another collection of very useful utilities burned onto a bootup disk. None of the programs distributed with the 2007 collection duplicate the utilities originally sold under the "PC beginner" title. The second collection is sold under the un-imaginary name of "Spotmau WinCares 2007". The lackluster name is accompanied by a very basic user interface. The interface for the bootup disk is plain Jane. No graphics, fancy or otherwise, are included with the interface. Approximately 50% of the programs are hard hitting file and disk management utilities that run under MS-DOS. The remainder of the programs run under the Windows XP operating system. The only problem that I have had with the second set of program offering has been with a backup program. I have never gotten the program to correctly backup a partition table.

Spam has never been a problem with Spotmau . I have never received the first e-mail from the company. I have not had to be careful to make sure that I was not "opting in" by default. There is no opting in or opting out - just like there are no toolbars or Web browser helpers and additions. I do not think that I can say that about any other computer program that I have purchased.

I am sorry to hear that Spotmau has gotten a bum rap. My relationship with the company has been very clean and I have recommended both utility discs to several of my friends.

Yes, wiz, it doesn't look good that GOTD trusts in developers with a bad reputation.
To be honest, I don't know if this is a new trend or if it is due to the fact, that we have become more sensible and use more scans. Whatever, such questionable business partners could give GOTD a bad reputation too. Have a look at http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/giveawayoftheday.com#comment , until now, there are only a few red flags, but only we insiders know, that the reviewers are wrong or have misunderstood things.

Back to today's developer:

There is at least no risk to have a look at that site, no fishing or other attacks, but be warned to use their software ( http://hosts-file.net/?s=spotmau.com ):

http://www.urlvoid.com/scan/spotmau.com

When you scroll down on the urlvoid.com page you'll find some more test sites.

graylox (hoping GOTD will scan not only the software packages they distribute, but also the developers)

The developer of todays giveaway is Spotmau. I've check Site Advisor, HP-Hosts, and WOT and all of them list the site as housing rogue software. Site Advisor does list the site as being clean, but the users do not. I know we've cautioned people to not put too much worth into users' comments, but all three of them say the exact same thing. I'd also like to add that the developer's website has awful grammar and spelling...I would think that a legit company would take a little more care to make sure they've spelled a word like procedure correctly.

This is the third time in about a week that we've had a less than reputable software. I realize that GOTD needs some developers, but do they need them that bad?
