I have been running this filehippo updater. It's pretty cool (technical term).

This program is brilliant for lazy people because it does almost all the work. You run it - you get a webpage back with links to updated versions and changelogs.

You can then choose to download whichever updates you like (naturally from filehippo.com)

One caveat - it only detects programs installed in their default locations - unless you change the settings - by clicking on 'settings' as soon as it starts.

I have suggested a feature that the output shows all detected applications (including those already running the latest version). Otherwise the absence on the list could also indicate that the updater never saw the application (and skipped it).

Is this giveawayoftheday.com??? Oh no! I thought it was getawayfortheday.com !!

Well, that would explain the lack of flight information and travel brochures...Aaahhhhhhhh

Hmmm, might as well grab a giveaway while I'm here then...

Lol, I'm assuming we all like free stuff or would you really be on giveawayoftheday.com? Anyway I really haven't downloaded anything from giveawayoftheday.com in a few days. Just because it is free doesn't mean I would want it.

"I don't think it applies to this particular program as from the description it seems to be filehippo.com's own program rather than one created by an outside developer that they (filehippo.com) are merely distributing."

[FileHippo]
"By using the information, services and products available through this site and downloading any software, you are agreeing to the terms and conditions contained herein."

See,...they got you too - And for a naked lady, your intelligence is of the higher order. Whether their own product, or that of a third party - It appears the disclaimer covers anything provided as a service, information, or download from their site. They get you looking one way, then hit you from another. It depends upon the way you read it, and the way their shifty lawyers would interpret it in court.

...or do I also need to take my clothes off in order to think straight? Wait,...Naaaah, no man could accomplish that feat. [He pauses,..laughs socks off] I haven't had much shuteye these past few weeks, and I'm sticking to that excuse.

But seriously, your point about the GOTD program updates is valid - Does anyone know if you can choose which updates to install? As for the beta release, OMG, anyone running Windows OS becomes a lifetime Microsoft beta tester, anywho-oo.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michelle,

lol! Now how did I know you would use that service?! lol (too much head-bangin' in the mosh-pit, me thinks). Really, if anyone has a pet elephant they are trying to dispose of, just paint 'FREE' on its side and Michelle will find it. Bury it deep in the jungle under six feet of wet cement, and I will bet she finds it before the cement is half dry.

One thing that was odd was it found an update for a Geforce graphics card drive when I don't have a geforce graphics card. It also told me there was an update for my ati driver (I do have an ati graphics card). Unfortunately the update wasn't compatible with the graphics card I have so it wouldn't let me install. It got so far and then stopped the installation and told me it wasn't compatible with my graphics card that I have installed.

Wolven, your posts on this thread can be read only after attaching a USB secret decoder that reveals all previously invisible text. ;)

Interesting discrepancy you found. I don't think it applies to this particular program as from the description it seems to be filehippo.com's own program rather than one created by an outside developer that they (filehippo.com) are merely distributing. What I found interesting is something that was included by the OP originating the thread:

"We're currently beta testing this exciting new addition to our website and have released it as a public beta for everyone to download."

That's something to note, particularly for those who would rather not deal with beta software. Plenty of people are annoyed by buggy software that is in final release. They are not likely to be any happier with beta software even though it is understood that beta is expected to be buggy.

Another issue to consider is this program makes lists of ALL software to check for updates. Anyone wishing to try the fillhippo.com beta updater must remember the condition that users are not entitled to free updates on software obtained from GAOTD. Inadvertanly allowing updates on GAOTD software will cause reversion to trial versions. That fact has been reflected in comments and forum posts from people who tried to get free updates anyway or those who forgot to shut off automatic updating features that were on by default in some programs.

I used catchup many years ago and it was excellent, then norton system works started using it, went to pieces and cnet stopped it saying it was vulnerable to hackers.

I did email cnet and they said (4 years ago) that they might start it again, however, seems like its dead.

This verion found two updates, flash for non MSIE browsers.

Also an opera new release.

Not complaining, hopefully it will improve.

I created a folder in programs dropped the file into it ceated a short cut on the desktop and it worked fine.

That's pretty cool, is it something like cnet catchup? Which they don't do anymore. I loved cnet catchup, but cnet stopped that service a couple years ago.

Very nice idea in theory Lee, but...

"[Privacy Policy]:
The only information collected is a list of programs and their versions, along with the operating system details to help with processing. Additionally none of this is linked to your IP address and the logs are deleted after processing."

If that is true, why the disclaimer on all products, services and downloads from the site...

"[Terms and Conditions - Disclaimer]:
References to "filehippo.com" and "this site" refer to the filehippo.com and related websites, it's owners and any related companies.

That last sentence is interesting, as 'they' are the ones using the software in this instance. Good site, but I won't trust them inside my computer until I can trust Microsoft...And we know that will never happen.
