JEG88, apologies if you think I sounded cold - truth be known I hadn't run out of enthusiasm to help you - I'd run out of the will to stay awake. But even after another 3 hours sleep - I still have no idea why only you have this exact problem (twice). If I was at your PC I would probably try to start Frigate while watching it with Sysinternals Process Monitor. Sometimes that can help determine where/why a program is choking. (If I could reproduce the problem on my PC - I could probably narrow down what was wrong in minutes).

One idea I have (a benefit of sleep) what happens if you close all running programs - including all the programs you are able to close running from the system tray. (Then double check Task Manager to make sure all your programs have closed) - and then try to start up Frigate. Perhaps a program you use (and have running) isn't too keen on sharing the desktop with Frigate.

Edit: Obviously not 100% awake yet - now I notice BillW50's post above. :)

Have you shutdown all of your startup programs living in your system tray, JEG88? As I have found problems like this before. For example, if Sticky Password starts before AltDesk (both were GAOTD programs), AltDesk will not launch or run. Run AltDesk first, and they both run fine.

Well,-yes;...and that's possibly the only thing I'm
sure of when it comes to this mess of a Mystery!

It must not be the SW, -'cuz no one else is having this
The SW is installed and activated fine; -its just not
opening properly.

-So it must be my PC.
The OS., the SW installed (many from GAOTD), and
Frigate3,...-Just aren't 'playing' well 'together'!

--Something {it seems} is 'keeping' it from opening!
-I just can't figure out what/why.!

I've tried several things:

> checked-out my McAfee Security -to see if it was

> tried removing the "Tips"-file from Frigate3.

> I tried 'removing-,re-DL,-reinstalling,+rebooting'.
...-[several times]-

> I even took a chance and e-mailed the Co.
Did I do something wrong in set-up? I'm not one of those people who doesn't read the readme files, and I've always activated when required. Any suggestions?

NoSplash or Nologo will launch Frigate without logo.
Example "C:\Program Files\Frigate3\Frigate3.exe" /nologo

Hi JEG88!

1) Yes I used to get the Tip screen, but I turned it off. So I don't see it anymore.

2 & 3) I have spent many hours to see where Frigate stores turning off plugins. I even found two locations in the registry. But I haven't found anything, nor where you can disable the tips without going through Frigate yet. But there is a file called Frigate3.elf in the Frigate3 folder. It lists all of the errors and memory dumps and things. This could be useful when troubleshooting. The Exception ones are probably the most useful part. Here is an example of one.

Exception:
----------------------------------------------
2.1 Date : Fri, 30 Mar 2007 05:54:08 -0500
2.2 Address: 4003C2A5
2.3 Module : rtl60.bpl
2.4 Type : EOleException
2.5 Message: Catastrophic failure.

4) Okay one hanging plugin probably shot down. Like 7 more to go.

5) Oh safe mode is easy. When you turn on your computer, you may routinely see what they call the POST screen. It checks your system out. It also allows you to enter into the Setup (BIOS-CMOS). After this point during a normal bootup, your computer should beep once and Windows starts to load. Right at this point, press the F8 key. If you got the timing down, you should see a menu and you can select Safe Mode with the arrow keys and then hit enter. It will take along time to boot into safe mode. So be patient. And to get back to regular mode once again, just restart your computer.

BuBBy .. sorry about the Austin Powers image :> I was sayin' groovy before that fella was potty trained. So, think ...Woodstock! Janis Joplin! Gracie Slick! Jim Morrison!

JEG .. you have more patience than I ....and I did not think that was possible! However...
It might be easier to get Free Commander, which will do the same thing. That was my course of action and I haven't regretted it once. Perhaps down the road, a solution will be developed for this problem with Frigate .. but in the meantime, there are alternatives. If you don't like the Free Commander program, let me know and I will find another for you. Good Luck!

*BuBBy,
Well I'm still here, don't give up on me PLEASE I still Really want this thing to work!!

*BillW50,
~Thanks for the response.
1] I was wondering what appears on the screen right after the programs icon is clicked;
-compared to what I explained [above] that happens to me. =[gif. & 'Tips' screen; -do u get a 'Tip of the Day' window??]

2]Yes, I did get the 'ship' icon in the tray. When I left click on it, nothing happens.
Right click options show/read 1]exit 2]restore scroll lock.
-I tried #2 =nothing. ;......->

3]..-> Hitting 'exit' WILL close everything.
But trying to close any other way -[like, -the 'X' in the right corner of 'TIPS', or right clicking the title-bar of the 'TIPS' window], -will cause the "This program is not responding"-['cancel or end now'] window to open.-[If u chose to end -the program will close.]
--Clicking anywhere else on the 'Tip' window will add the words "this program is not responding" to the 'Tip of the Day'-Title-bar.

>>> In conclusion, it seems like 'The Tip of The Day' is mucking up the program from starting correctly! -Cuz' if u want to close its window it closes the program not just the window. --Maybe if I could get that closed the program could open/start.?
-I found the 'tip' folder in the prog. folder;..--I'm wondering if I remove or get rid of it if that would help the prog. to work ?;-[not that I want to but there's no way I know of to get that window to close by itself!?] <<<<
^~~{"What do u all think of this theory???"}~~~^

--The Frigate3 gif. image does not move or respond. -[just the timer shows when cursor is over either.]

4]Yes I have a sound card.

5]I don't know enough about computing to try the things u are suggesting -> [like
'running or reinstalling it under safe mode' // and I don't know how to 'change my video driver to a generic one'] on my own -[w/out full and proper guidance]. :(

I'm not real comfortable messing w/ something I'm not familiar w/ w/out a definitive answer that it needs to be messed w/ first.

But thanks for your help, --let me know if u have any more ideas k.

Also-
*[I don't have 'MEDIA CENTER'.] [ :( ]

I have the latest version of Win Amp .. all programs are up to date. PCIe video card, TV tuner card with FM tuner, and 5.1-channel surround sound. Plenty of HD space, plenty of memory, dual core P4's ... methinks the problem is not with my computer.

I wonder if the problem exists only in Media Center computers .. could it be a conflict with the TV tuner card? Might be worth researching, Bubby .. many people left comments about identical install errors .. if they have Media Center PC's, that could be the answer.

As a side note, I removed the Frigate3 program because I was unable to get help here before the giveaway ended (no offense, BuBBy!) Seemed like the thing to do, given the fact manufacturer support is denied to all giveaway programs.

I chose Free Commander .. which, by the way, installed faultlessly. I LIKE faultless.

Forget about the trick about moving the plugins folder. That doesn't work. The plugins load anyway. I think it is in the registry. If we need to go that far, I'll list it here. Let me know if safe mode (you can try reinstalling in safe mode too) or the switching to a generic video driver doesn't work. Does this computer have a sound card?

Well JEG88... I changed the look of mine a bit. But this is what it should sort of look like.

http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/5268/20070331113601fs2.jpg

And no, don't worry about WinAmp. You don't have to have it with Frigate. And once it is running, you will see a old ship icon in your tray. Do you see it? And how do you kill it when it hangs? Through the Task Manager?

I have some ideas for you to try. Like try running it under safe mode. Change your video driver to a generic one. And/or try moving out the plugins folder out of the Frigate folder in the Program Files folder. Then start Frigate.

I don't get any Error Messages. It just freezes like I wrote in my original post. As soon as I hit 'finnish' at the end of install -the 2 "windows" appear-[once it happened before I could even hit finnish]. That's it ,-it doesn't get any further. -If I close & restart the program ,-same thing.
--Are those that work starting the same way = 'w/ the gif image & the tip of the day window'? -[and does the timer appear?] -If so, what happends next for you?-[=how does it ['sapposed-to'] start? ]
I read in the comments that it was slow to start so I tried waiting an hour for that timer to go away & the prog. to launch/start but no luck. Yesterday I tried re-install, re-boot, & re-DL but w/ the same results. -It DL's & installs fine it just wont start-up!!!!!!!!

I know there were others who couldn't get theirs to run too, but I don't know if they were having the same prob. cuz they didn't say. But there were others who had that dll. prob. like Bobby does. I'm wondering if mine is unrelated to that.[??]

I just Really hope someone can help fix all this. [!!]XX!!!

P.S >>I don't get what 'WINAMP' has to do w/ this but I don't have it.<<

Oh yeah... anybody know how to use the spell checker in Frigate? You have to have Office installed (except Office XP won't work they say). No problem, I have Office 2000 installed. Here you can tell it where the dictionaries are at.

Options -> Control Center -> Editors -> Spelling

And I told it to look at either:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\1033\

Under Mode (you have to have a text file opened to see it I think), I have Spelling checked. But I don't ever see it do anything. Anybody else figure this one out?

Yes, if the install can find those DLLs, it won't have a problem. Although two of my machines, don't have any of them and Frigate didn't complain either. So the only way to cause it to complain is to have WinAmp installed (at least one time maybe) and have some of the DLLs missing.

You don't need to have WinAmp installed to use and install FriGate. Although it looks like to me that it will use it if it finds it installed. You can change the media player Frigate will use here:

Options -> Control Center -> Multimedia -> Use WinAmp

I don't think that is the case BuBBy. As the Frigate install wouldn't look in the "Audio Converter Plus" folder for the DLL. And I just installed it on another computer that never had either WinAmp nor Audio Converter Plus. Nor does it have any libsndfile.dll file either. Thus I believe Frigate only complains if it thinks WinAmp is installed. If it thinks it isn't there, then it skips looking for them.

My point was - I have Winamp - I had these DLL's because I have Winamp installed. You have them because of another program. Perhaps you need these DLLs on your system for the install to work.

Installing Winamp appears to include one of more of these DLLs, which might permit the install to proceed. (If Audio Converter Plus isn't already installed - you might have some problems installing as the Giveaway has expired).

BuBBy... I don't have WinAmp installed on my Windows XP laptop and it gave no errors. So I think you will only see this error sometimes if you do have WinAmp installed. I also did notice that one GAOTD program called "Audio Converter Plus" (Jan 26) also included this DLL. And a newer version at that.

I just checked - and libsndfile.dll (Thanks BillW50 for the correct spelling) is only in the Winamp folder.

Just wondering Bobby & JEG88 - do you have the latest version of Winamp installed?

It would be interesting to see if these bad/missing file errors disappear if winamp is installed. (Perhaps the integration with Winamp is a bit "stupid" in backing down if Winamp isn't actually installed).

I suggest installing Winamp from http://www.winamp.com
Then try installing Frigate3 again. Let me know if there any changes with the error messages.

On my main laptop, no problems installing or anything. Although I did have the earlier Frigate giveawayoftheday installed too. I renamed the programs folder before the install. This one is the professional version vs. the one in Novemeber was just the Standard version. I did screw it up later and the plugins wouldn't work (claimed I had to pay to use them - I think I uninstalled the Standard version). Uninstalled the pro one too and I had to delete the registry keys and then reinstall pro again. Now works fine.

Installed on another older laptop running Windows 2000 and the only error was that libsndfile.dll was missing. Media players use this one a lot. You can find a copy of it if you Google it. I didn't, I just ignored the error. And I bet it has to do with using WinAmp. Yes this 2000 laptop does have it installed. Otherwise I don't have any other problems except the Startup Manager crashes. Which is okay, as I don't need this feature in Frigate.

Some have mentioned PowerDesk. I have the Pro version 5 (cost about 30 bucks or so). What others isn't telling you is that PowerDesk crashes a lot out of the blue. Especially under Windows XP. I used to use it a lot, but I only use the File/folder sync part nowadays. And sometimes that isn't that stable either.

Btw, I am writing this under Frigate. As I am trying to use all of the features of Frigate. I am also running Aston and AltDesk too. 2 other wonderful programs from giveawayoftheday. :)

BuBBy, thanks for throwing out an oar! ~grin~

Actually, this system is about average I guess .. running XP Pro, close to a terabyte of space .. over 1G memory (exact numbers fail me at this hour). Logged in as Administrator, Check. Cleaned up residue from first install, Check. Activation, Check.
Still no joy.

I'm not 100% on the missing 'libsendfile.dll' error... it flashed on the screen, nested among the nscrt.dll errors. Translation is pretty accurate, though...probably not off by more than one letter.

As long as you have activated the program - we will hopefully be able to resolve the install issue soon, maybe...

It's hard for me to say - because I didn't have any problems during install. Also I don't have a libsendfile.dll anywhere on my hard disk.

When you install Frigate3 - are you logged in using an Administrative user account? Are you running XP Professional? Plenty of free disk space? Try running Ccleaner (or alternative) before install to clean out temp folder etc.

I'm really not sure where to go with this one...

Well, JEG, it would appear that we have been set adrift without oars ...

Guess we will have to ditch this giveaway and try Free Commander, the freeware file manager at http://www.freecommander.com/.

Darn, and I truly believed we would be able to get this program's glitch resolved.
