Apple’s own terms of use overwhelmingly apply the terms “purchase” or “rent” of music, indicating a strong difference between those acquisition types of music files. While one term refers to the “ownership” of a file, the other refers to “borrowing” a file. Just like a CD, it may be considered reasonable that the file can be owned, while its content cannot and simply includes a license to listen to it. However, just as music collections were inherited in the past, so should digital music and it would be plain silly if anyone would lose a carefully assembled music collection with emotional values when we pass away.

Our digital copyright system is far from being completed and being a representation of the term fair use.

I knew that mobi is compatible with Amazon but I didn't know that Amazon owned the mobi format. It fits, though.

I never liked html reads. I do like to read with Kindle for PC, it just has bugs and when a reboot of my kindle deleted all my collections, I keep the two versions in sync as a backup for each other's collections!

I have PMed you. I would like to know if there is a way for Kindle for PC to see a cover when all I get now is a blue book but Calibre has a nice picture!

I was using Baen as an example to show not all Ebook sources are robber-baron jerks, :)

Calibre is a fine project indeed, and I agree it's an essential tool for any serious Ebookworm- like me and thee.

It's also far from finished, the way Kovid Goyal keeps updating it.

0.9.17 was released today, and *I've* not been losing covers. PM me, we can see if there's a fix. he put a new PDF engine in recently and some bugs need chased out.

Kindle for PC is not very good, unless they've made major changes. Mobipocket Reader is what I use for mobi. I used to prefer HTML read on Firefox until I bought my wife a Kindle...

BTW, amazon formats are variants of mobipocket- they own them.

I agree about Baen's CDs and free books. However, if you're not into Sci-Fi, Fantasy or Alternate History, they may not be of much interest. Calibre, on the other hand can convert your books from one format to another even if you can't find where you got them.

I recently found a few books I wanted but they were only in nook format. I could not find them in kindle format. No problem. A few seconds with Calibre and Voila! kindle format!

There are plug-ins for removal of DRM and they ONLY work with YOUR books. You have to enter your personal identification numbers for the devices before they will process the books. This is NOT to be used to "share" the books, just to allow you to use them yourself. I have used this method because some kindle books come in a "tiny font" and ignore your global font settings in your kindle. This is most often with the new kindle 8 format (azw3). Calibre allows a azw3 to azw3 conversion that fixed the problem.

Calibre does NOT have a conversion to azw format, just azw3. If you want to convert to read on Kindle for PC, you have to use mobi output instead. Why? I have NO idea! Mobi conversions loose your book "cover" and give you 2 copies of the table of contents (one at the end) but at least it's readable!

No, no, no!

Buy Ebooks!!!!

But... Buy Ebooks from Baen Ebooks- DRM free since year 2000.

Now offering Ebooks from Baen Books, Blindsided Books, Del Rey, E-Reads, Fairwood Press, Ford Street Publishing, Night Shade Books, Schlock Mercenary, [1st 4, PDF only] SRM Publisher, Yard Dog Press, and Tor Books.

Baen eBooks are available in the following DRM-free formats:

    Mobi/Kindle/Palm
EPUB/Nook/Stanza
Sony LRF
Rocketbook
RTF
MS Reader
HTML/Read Online

you can download them in one or *all* formats.

...and if you need a different format later, *no problem!*

[Baen's note on recent changes: As of December 16th, Baen ebooks are now available for sale at other vendors as well as at this site. At the same time, prices for our individual ebooks were raised to meet the rest of the market. Titles available in print as hardcovers only will be $9.99, trade paperbacks $8.99, and mass market paperbacks $6.99. As part of the adjustment, we have also raised ebook royalties to authors by 25%.

Available exclusively at Baen.com are eARCs and serialized monthly bundles at our previous prices. There is a significant change from our previous practice in the availability of the bundles: once the books for a given month are printed and the books made available individually at other sellers, these bundles will not be available for orders. For example, books labeled January 2013 were available for sale only until December 2012. Because the policy was implemented very quickly, if you were unable to purchase the bundles for December, January or February, please write to us at pr@baen.com.]

They even give books away in the Free Library- when they Finish Reconstruction , and on CD's in print runs [see baencd at the Fifth Imperium for the ones already released...

here is the info from the Fifth Imperium:
The Baen CDs hosted here are freely-distributable disks provided to promote the sale of the books contained within. Baen allows these CDs to be distributed not simply to provide free electronic copies of their books, but to generate sales for those same books. They are a medium of advertising.

These CDs are generally available bound into the first edition of the books they are titled for. A few of the CDs (those marked with the P prefix) are not bound in any book and were made available as publishing industry promotional material.

Please remember that just because these books are being provided at no cost does not mean that they are in the Public Domain. Just because Baen isn't asking for any money for these copies doesn't mean that they are giving up any of their copyrights. Copyright doesn't mean that you have to pay for something, it means that someone legally owns the right to distribute something (or not) in any fashion they desire - including doing so at no charge. So all the rules that apply to an ebook you bought and paid for also apply to these titles.

If you download any of the disks, please take the time to go to the Baen Ebooks site and buy a copy of at least the CD's primary ebook. For a modest investment of about $$9.99, or less, you can buy the eBook. Or you can buy the entire Webscription month that the CD accompanies for $18 and/or buy the book in paper form.

Well, if you have Calibre, you can handle the ebook issue fairly easily but it could be time consuming if you have a lot in the format. I think Calibre will do it batch so it's not that bad.

How trapped are your digital movies and TV shows?

There are certainly advantages to that. But one of the biggest downsides of going all digital is that how you can view your content is largely dependent on the service you purchased it from.

Buying films or TV episodes from a digital media outlet may be great if you watch though one particular device. But what happens if you change from iOS to Android? From a PC to a Mac? From a Roku to Apple TV? We chart it out.

The trapped video matrix

Enough preamble. Below is a chart of how trapped your video might be, followed by explanations. I've tried to cover the major ways people might try to view their digital films, and I've actually tested all of these to see if they work as promised.

and don't for get eBooks
