lol, I know what you mean. Windows simplifies things so much it makes people lazy.

I know there were earlier times, but when I first started in computers. This was my teenager days, we would spend hours upon hours typing code into the computer and that was to make a cassette tape screech code for 30 minutes to play a game.

Some of those games were pretty cool though.

A little work to try to get a program on GUI to work is nothing.

I learned right after getting this computer to AVOID Program Files unless I have to (some installs don't give you much of a choice). I have Solitare Master 2 from a CD. I found that it needs to be outside Program Files AND it still needs to be in admin mode to be able to save any settings. I think from over 400 games, I have 5 that require admin mode for one reason or another. I have found the compatibility mode to only be helpful in a few cases.

I do have one group of products that I have in Program Files because the developer and I spent weeks trying to figure out how to get some add-ons to it to work. That was PCStitch Pro. To get most of the old Pattern Library CDs to work, I ended up uninstalling ALL my M&R Tech products, going through the registry looking for any references left-over and then starting from scratch. I probably could have gone elsewhere at that point but after all the headaches, I wasn't going to take the chance! It worked and even though only 5 or 6 of the 12 show in the "Program Features" (Vista Add/Remove), they all worked FINALLY. PCStitch Pro had gone through a major upgrade since then and that went smoothly. BTW - PCStitch version 9 (both Pro and Standard) are supported under Vista AND Windows 7.

Actually, it's not always bad when something doesn't work first off. You learn a lot by getting it to work and the geek in me actually enjoys it.

Those kind of games dont have any pull. Could vitual pc or 7 xp's virtual xp run those games, since virtual drivers are only basic drivers.

I've installed them, but never ran games. I played movies though which can be pretty graphics intensive.

Ya, know. If I have trouble etting a game going. I will scroll down the whole list till I find a setup that works. MS put it there for a reason, even the MS NT or 95.
--------------------------------
I think that alot of people are like my friend. He is a wow player and he will literally let all his add ons break before he updates them. At least the main ones he likes. He has the updaters that do it for you, but he wants to play so bad that he put up with errors on his screen.
I'll talk to him during the day and tell I sent him some awesome piece of software, for instance the Kaspersky 2010 suite that was given to windows 7 party people.
I email the key to him with link from the party for kasp and he still hasnt gotten it fromn his email or installed it.
He's running windows firewall with avg antivirus. It just kills me.

My point is they want to do their thing and when it doesnt work they bit@#(gripe) about it.
Just my 2 cents

I see comments over and over complaining about games that don't work under Vista (and now 7). Most of the complaints refer to the games offered here. I have a few observations to make.

1) I have had Vista for over 2.5 years. In that time, over 95% of the games I had before worked with no trouble. A few need DOSBox (now that I have that), a few need a compatibility mode and a few need to run as administrator. VERY few were actually lost.

2) Just about all games that are developed now ARE designed to run with Vista (and now 7).

3) Everybody's system is configured differently. Even if two people got IDENTICAL systems at the same time, within a few weeks, they would be different (if not sooner). Settings for various software as well as levels of the software and even hardware drivers will affect what works and doesn't work in any given way. There are very few games offered here that universally fail for any given operating system. Most work for some but not for others.

4) I mentioned that new games are compatible with Visa and 7. That being said, we cannot expect NEW games for free. Except in rare cases like TellTale (and those games don't work right for me), new games are NOT free. We cannot expect the majority of the games offered here or elsewhere for free to be Vista compatibility. Most are simply too old.

Conclusion - Any game you find may require a bit of work to get to run and even may require working with the developer. However, there is a very very good chance that it will work. No guarantee, but a very good probability.

Now, having said all this - the games we are being offered are free. Accept and work with what we have and quit griping!

Just as a final note - I was one of the lucky ones. Today's game, Trick Ball, worked like a charm from the starting gate. No compatibility settings or changes at all. I just have to move the shortcut group it made (it didn't ask me where to put it).
