The one game that I have that I KNOW needs at least 10 is Tinker. You have to have Vista Ultimate to get Tinker (it's one of the few Ultimate Exclusives). It works like a charm. I had to start over (from the tutorial) when I changed names but I hadn't played it in a while so it was OK.

I was surprised to find I have 11. I have no idea when Windows updated that.

I've had Vista since April of '07 (just a few months after it came out). It was pre-loaded on my PC so no upgrade was needed. I've had very few problems with it. I understand upgrading to it is difficult but in general, I feel it's been unfairly trashed. My recent problems were because of a corrupted username and I would have stayed with the faulty-non-working Calendar if I had known the full ramifications of a username change. At this point, I do not plan on upgrading to 7. All the "new" features that I've heard about beyond what Vista has are so minor that is just not worth the price and aggravation. Unless I have to, I'll wait for my next PC and 7 may be just a memory by then. LOL

That's good news Dragonlair - glad you got it working. The site that p[ops up must have been the developers old site.

The DX9's that are installed onto my computer are in the root directory. i.e. the HDD where windows is instaled, usually C:\

I'm looking forwards to getting windows 7, but I'm waiting until it's well and truly established. I wasted my money on a copy of Vista over 2 years ago which is stashed in my old programs cupboard (though I now have a laptop with Vista on it which I bought a couple of months ago to take on vacation). I only had it installed on my PC for four weeks then reverted back to XP. I tried the Beta version of Win 7 and really liked it. I want to experience the better graphics of DX10. I have several games that are DX10 ready, but you need a Vista (and now Win 7) platform to enjoy them. (something to look forwards to. :)

Stephen,

I still don't understand what it's doing but that did work. I checked the DirectX diagnostics and it said I had 11 (what comes with 7 - it must have updated somewhere along the way with my windows updates). I downloaded and installed 9.0C from Microsoft. I checked the game and it now works. I then checked the diagnostics again and it still said I have 11. It looks like you were right. You can have multiple levels running.

BTW - where do you find DirectX on your PC. I did a search and found lots of entries but not the folder involved!

I got into the game but I didn't go farther. I did note that when I exited, it opened a site on my browser that appears to be for sale. I guess it's a bit old!

There is no true install with GemTowers, it's a simple extraction from a zip.

At least I got it!

thanks!

Whiterabbit

I really like this game. I didn't want to say too much on the GGAOTD post because of where it was. However, I sincerely appreciate the listings you come up with. When you listed all the things you were trying to get done at once makes me even more appreciative of the time you take for each person who seeks you advise - and you do it for free. Especially when you are taking time from your own game playing to do so. I don't want to sound too gushy here but I want you to know that there are many, many out there who feel as I do. I know you get some grief from people who can't be pleased but hopefully that will make you realize even more how important you are.

Thanks, Stephen.

I can also create a restore point before I try installing 9.0C. That way I know I can get 10 back. I'll give that a try tomorrow. It's getting too late tonight.

Actually older versions of Direct X are not overwritten. When i look into the appropriate folder on my computer i see about 20 versions of Direct X.

Even if the newer version was overwritten, unless you're running the latest games it's not going to matter.

Gem towers is a really good 3D match three game thats well worth having in any gamers library.

I'd suggest you install a copy of Direct X 9.0 c and then see if the game works. If you are worried about your copy of DX10 being overwritten, you can then reinstall the latest version of DX10, which is freely available over on Microsofts site. Then check to see if Gem towers still works. If i'm correct and you have two versions of DX, i.e. DX10 and DX9.0, you've got yourself a great game. If it doesn't work, I was wrong, but you've lost nothing apart from a little time. Though from the evidence in my folders no overwriting should occur..

I hope this helps you Diane?

Regards

That's not always the case. Usually, a newer version over-writes an older version so if you install an older version, you could over-write the newer version. Most games require a MINIMUM version, not an exact version. This is just strange.

Hi, Dragonlair,
I'm not a computer expert, but I have learnt that some software insists on an older version of DirectX, and that it is possible to install and run that version, though your system has already the newer one.

Whiterabbit posted a link to GemTowers in the discussion of today's game (Treasure of Persia). Since my comment are to that game and not the given game, I'm posting here rather than the game comments.

I downloaded and tried to run GemToweers. I am running Vista32 Ultimate SP2. I have DirectX 10. The game insists I have DirectX 9.0 and it needs 9.0C to run. It aborted. I removed it.

If it can't even tell accurately that I have a higher version of DirectX, then someone has something codes wrong. Probably - they're only looking at the last part of the number and "assuming" the "9".

If they fix that, I'll be glad to try it again.
