The euro is worth more. The U.S. dollar went down hill back when the took gold from as its backing.

http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi?Amount=1&From=EUR&To=USD&image.x=57&image.y=12&image=Submit

1.00 EUR = 1.50200 USD
top is euro to us
5 eur = 7.51 U.S. or 12.49 EUR = 18.7600 USD
3.32889 EUR = 5.00 U.S. or 16.6378 EUR = 24.99 USD
bottom is us to euro, i just flipped it around t the euros underneath each other
That just doesn't look right. I think you had it backwards when the d2d sale rabbit,
The euro games came off being cheaper way go.

Thanks Wizz. :) That doesn't seem fair. It's not as good a deal as we are getting in the UK, but then again wages are different and things have a way of turning around (e.g. D2D games are cheaper in the U.S.)

W.R.

p.s.

I still think it's a bargain for that price.

The other advantage of getting it via steam is that the game is automatically updated with any patches that may be released, you also have easier access to online servers. There is a price difference between the US and UK. I only see games with pounds sterling, but they don't seem to follow exchange rates. for example the deal of te week sells for £5 in the K and $5 in the U.S.. The game is being sold for £12.49 on Steam in the UK, what price is it showing in the US? Thanks.

Txnnok, even though D2D lists a cheaper price, they're still more expensive as they add tax to the order whereas Steam does not. Just throwing it out there.

Glad to here that. :) I find Windows live very intrusive, but have given up on trying to avoid it, so now most of my latest games (apart from most of the steam ones), always bring up Windows live, though I don't log in. My windows live name is SlickWhiterabbi (I used slickwhiterabbit usually, but they restrict the number of characters, lol - the name is derived from one of my favorite Jefferson airplane songs which was written and sug by Grace Slick). My AIM and Skype names are the same. :)

whew, got battlestations working, I had manually install dx9 by dragging the install file into installed Battlestaions folder and the install it. for some reason W7 wouldnt install dx9 and the I did the same thing with Games for windows. There is install folder for it to. I think I wold have ok without it though since dx9 would have worked.

Thats probably a little ruff to follow. I guess its one those you have to do it understand it.
The one thing I never understood, is if you have dx9, dx10 , or dx11 as long as what you have is equal or higher to the game. Then why do need to install it again. You would think that it would be a standard driver or it least it would copy itself to the the needed place.

I was checking out d2d to see if the new $5 game was out yet, not yet. Anyway I noticed they were offering arma 2 for 24.95. 4 cents cheaper, woohoo!! I can get that operation now! http://www.direct2drive.com/2/8152/product/Buy-ArmA-2-Download

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh i ran into a little problem with running battlestations pacific on Windows 7 64bit. I'm not sure if 64bit is the issue, but every time I click to run the game it can find dx9, except it calls it. d3dx9_940.dll and if I download that I get xlive.dll

Is games for Windows required to run Battles stations? I did accidently deny network access on kasp. to Windows LIve. when it popped asking to run battlestations. Now I cant figure out how to erase it from being untrusted from the firewall. I finally changed the setting to allow, but it is still in a untrusted mode. I would prefer to just delete the entire windows live thing and start over, but it wont let me do that.

What a pain in the rear. Before I changed to W7, I did use Games for windows, but it was trying to make enter their code, but it let me play after some trial and error.

Any Ideas rabbit or anyone?

Hi Txnnok.

Yeah, I'd definitely go for ArmA II over Killing floor, simply because of the savings you're going to make.

I'm playing Killing floor to death at the moment and loving it as well. It's a fantastic game. I'd download the game and take advantage of the free weekend, but buy ArmA II. I'm sure Killing floor will be on offer again, maybe for 50% off next time. Even without a discount it's a brilliant bargain and half the price of other games in its class.

It's annoying when you've got to make a decision over two excellent games, especially when both are on offer. I've been tightening my belt recently and have managed to resist buying several games (Machinarium, Euflora, AI War: Fleet Command, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Dreamkiller), though I’ll buy them eventually. I doubt the latest COD title will drop in price for several months, non of the COD titles over the last few years have. Usually most games tend to drop in price after a few months, some significantly, but because they have been so successful, they have been able to keep the prices high. I've still to play last years yet, lol, so even though I really want to buy it, I'm going to wait for a while. You never know, they may have a COD special on Steam sometime. I've not seen one yet, but we live in hope, lol. Did you notice there's nothing being offered to pre purchase COD, whereas most other games have given some sweetener, for example pre ordering the latest Painkiller game gets you the first two for free, the same with Red Faction Guerilla, when I pre-ordered it I got the first two for free, plus I got money discounts on both. When I pre-ordered Damnation I got second sight for free (I think second sight is better than Damnation, lol); to be honest, I can think of one game that I’ve pre-ordered where i haven't got something extra.

'scuze the rant above, lol.

W.R.

Wow this game looks sweet. I am so tempted to buy it. I was holding back a little cash, but that was to get Killing Floor. I figured it would goon sale for like 15 bucks during this promotion or after and the extra pack.
I was kind of thinking of picking up Combat Wings: Battle of Britain too, but thats another post. I think you've covered already anyway.

I guess I could look at like this. This game is 50 bucks, the other 20. It is easier to come up with 5 dollars than 25. That would be the alternative. choices, choices, choices.
Plus its a single player game. I wonder what the 3d rating is on it. I'm gonna check it out in few hours. If its good, I think I'll buy it.
-----------------------------------
Those are some sweet looking screenshots. Its almost 3d without the equipment.

I'd actually forgotten how amazing this game looks until I'd checked out the videos which you can see below by following the 'HERE' links, plus the several images I copied from the net. I got a little carried away with the images but only because I wanted to show you how amazingly life like this game looks. You should hear the game while in the middle of a fire fight; with the surround sound turned up as much as I dare (the windows rattle if I try to put the volume on full, lol). The audio is fantastic and really adds to the overall immersivness that this game gives you. Wear ear defenders if you decide to play it on full volume, lol.

If I had to score the necessity for having this game; (well for a FPS and war gaming addict); on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give this a 9 (lol)

The game reminds me a lot of Operation Flashpoint, however, there’s a reason for that. It’s because it’s the second Armed Assault game that was created to follow on from the original Operation Flashpoint and its expansions, which were released from 2001 to 2002. You can get the original for as little as $5 or less. It's packaged as the ‘Game of the Year’ edition and includes the original game, called Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis plus two expansion packs called Red Hammer and Resistance. It’s still a great game in my opinion, and is probably one of the reasons it hasn't been converted to freeware like some FPS games from that period (e.g. Hidden & Dangerous plus one I'll be posting next week in the free games project) I’ve recently reinstalled the original Operation Flashpoint; the graphics are fairly basic, but it's graphics were actually really good for the time (much like Line of Sight: Vietnam {though that was released a year later}) and is similar to ArmA and ArmA II in game play, though they have far superior graphics. I usually give my older games away (anything pre 2002), but Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, is one of those games I just can’t part with. Armed Assault (ArmA) was released early in 2007 (unless you lived in Russia which got it late in 2006), then an expansion pack was released later in 2007 called Queens Gambit.

ArmA II was released late Spring/early Summer and was in my opinion a great game, unfortunately I wasn’t as gobsmacked with it as I am with the latest Operation Flashpoint; though there was a good reason for that - I’d bought several games at the same time as ArmA II and couldn’t decide which to play. I was really into Fallout 3 at the time and one of the games in the package I received included a hard copy of the first two DLC’s (The Pitt and Operation Anchorage), so apart from checking the game out to see what I thought about it, I hardly played it, also I was buying games from Steam like they were going out of fashion (I’ve bought 212 games via Steam since late January 09 - yeah I know, I'm mad). Still I played it enough to be able to say that the game play comes pretty close to the realism of the latest Flashpoint game.

If you like first person shooters with a lot of realism, Armed Assault II (ArmA II) will give you lots of it and then some. The graphics are nearly as good as Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, though maybe the soldier models are not quite as realistic, however, the environments look as good. I think Flashpoint wins in the AI department as well, but then again it has had several months more pre release tweaking than ArmA II. It’s not a run and gun type shooter, nor is it a linear style game that dictates where you head for throughout the game. If you want to succeed in game you'll need to play it as though you are really in a theatre of war, using tactics and stealth.

The game world is massive and is played as a sandbox game, which means you can go almost anywhere in the game world (though some restrictions do apply while taking part in missions). It’s basically a spiritual prequel to the latest Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, which was released about two weeks ago; only Dragon Rising is even more polished than ArmA II. I love the challenge of all the Flashpoint and Armed Assault games, apart from the first of each series, they look, sound and feel almost real, though the first armed Assault is actually a good looking game as well, but the environmental realism doesn't quite hit the spot like ArmA II and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. Of course, graphics are not the be all and end all, but they definitely add to the game play experience in my opinion. Thankfully, the game play is as good as the graphics, so the game isn't relying soley on it's graphics like some games I've purchased over the last year do (e.g. Damnation, Legendary, Velvet Assassin and Dark Sector.

If you are a shooter fan, especially a FPS fan (you can play the game in FPS or TPS) I highly recommend you buy ArmA II while it’s on sale. I‘ll be digging my copy out again once I tire of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. I may even re-install the first Armed Assault and it's expansion Queens Gambit as I hardly touched the expansions missions - (the usual reason, getting side tracked by newly acquired gammes, lol)

I do think the controls for this game are overly complex. I had to create a stand-up card with all the key bindings written down when I played the game for the first few time (I still have it). The controls reminded me a little of the Battlefield 2 key commands, with seperate sections for infantry, land vehicles, aircraft controls as well as team based controls. Looking at the game manual I roughly count over 80 seperate key commands, though some such as movement are repeated in the vehicles and infantry commands. That said, once you've played the game a few times the key bindings do become easier to remember. Many of the key bindings are common to most FPS games, and it's only because you have vehicles and squad based commands that there are so many keys to remember
