Nice one pavid; I wasn't sure whether you had Oblivion. I too intend replaying it again soon. I started to just before I went on vacation in May, then got inspired to play Fallout 3 again because of the expansion pacakges, so my new character was abandoned before they had made any real impact in the world. I'd actually installed a mass of mods, some of which were brilliant but others weren't so good, and it was the bad ones (which included a few mansions that were floating a few feet off the ground, that put me off, lol. Thankfully you can turn off the mods in Oblivion.

I think many gamers would suggest going for the Call of duty games, but to be honest i think the Battlefield 2 package is much better and infinitely much more replayable, especially considering theres so much extra free content. The last two Call of Duty games have hardly been reduced in price because of their populatity, though they may fianally come down when the next Callf duty is released. (maybe they will offer a deal on Steam where you'll be able to buy the whole shebang, lol). Graphically Call of duty 4 and 5 are far superior to Battlefield 2, but that's not to say BF2 is bad; on the contrary, the graphics are still pretty good. If you do get BF2 the first custom made maps I'd get for it are by a guy called The Dark. They are amongst the best custom made map you can get. I've even got one of his maps that was never released to the community because he suddenly stopped working on them after one of the testers upset him. I was also testing for him, so was lucky enought to get that final m ap, which i think was one of his best. There are a couple more mappers that created great maps, all of which I can list fr you. thankfully manyof them are still available over on the Battlefield singleplayer site.

Apart from a game called fuel none of the games until Red Faction Guerilla have been exceptional (apart from te expansion packages for Fallout 3, now all of a sudden loads of great games are being released.

I can't wait to check out Dragonage and Borderlands. I'm not as bothered about Call of Duty 6, but am looking forwards to Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassins Creed 2. some of the games that were supposed to be released this year such as Bioshock 2, Tom Clancy's Conviction, Dungeon Lords 2 and Two Worlds 2 are now being released next year. (which I'm glad about as I've spend more than I dare admit this year). :(

I think wizzards finacee will be playing Left 4 Dead this coming week; you'll have to join us. The Coop game is brilliant. If i see you online when we decide to play i'll buzz you. :)

Wabbit, I actually own and have played through Oblivion. I enjoyed it so much that I plan on playing through again as a different character but first I want to go through Morrowind to get a bit of the backstory. Unfortunately, I am very tight on space and so will need to wait until my 3 terabytes of storage arrive so I can reinstall most of the Steam games I already own plus the new ones I bought on the weekend as well as the ones I've purchased from Direct2Drive as well as the Big Fish games, Real Arcade and all the others I purchased many years ago. But before I do all the installing and re-installing of the games, I will be upgrading to Windows 7 from XP so there's going to be a bunch of other stuff to re-install.

Yep, I purchased the L4D package. You've spoken so highly of it that I wanted to give the original a whirl and just couldn't pass up the package deal. I looked at the Battlefield package as well as the Call of Duty package but couldn't make up my mind. I've mainly played First Person Shooters in the past and have avoided RTS games as well as squad based games but I thought that it was time to broaden my horizons. I just can't quite decide but now that things have eased financially I think it's time to take a real leap.

As you know, I have nothing but time on my hands and I've finally gotten used to (well, mostly used to) the unfortunate effects of the opiates I'm using too. Thus, Steam here I come, LOL, and I'm using your post above as a basis.

Glad you both bought it. I know what you mean about backlog - I've still to play Silent hunter IV and it's expansion. which i bough over 2 years ago, lol; plus a book case full of games, most of which I've hardly scratched the surface of, lol.

to pavid, even if your computer doesn't support it now, I'm sure you'll upgrade sometime over the next year or so. Though if you bought Red Faction Guerilla, which I think is one of this years best releases so far together with Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising - Assassins Creed should also run. I noticed you'd bought several games via Steam yesterday; I tried to message you, but for some reason it wouldn't let me so I left a message on your personal page. I think all the games you bought are brilliant (remember that we all may have different opinions on whats good and bad), though I'd have bought Oblivion instead of Morrowind. Still, Morrowind is also a fantastic game. As I said on your Steam page, it has hundreds of modifications available to expand the game and add loads more playabiility.

I actually bought Morrowind after Oblivion and still played it to death(I'd got fed up of RPG games after playing Wizardry 8 for months and then discovered the Battlefield series so started playing more FPS games. If you don't own Battlefield 2 I'd highly recommend buying the deluxe edition from Steam, it includes the original BF2 plus the Special Forces expansion pack; you also get the two booster packs - Euroforce and Armoured Assault, though these are now free anyway when you install the latest patch (v1.5) Battlefield 2 has hundreds of gigabytes of extra maps and modifications. I have around 500 Gb of mods and maps for BF2 - (if you do end up buying it I can direct you to all the best mods and maps - I used to beta test for some of the mods and several mappers).

Morrowind is actually more expansive than Oblivion. The main difference is the graphics; obviously Morrowind being a few years older, the graphics aren't as good, but that doesn't detract from the game play.

It just occured to me that Project Freedom was actually given away via the Game Giveaway project last year, but the name has been changed (I can't remember what the name was called, but I still have it in my back up drive so I wasted my money on that one, lol) It's got great graphics for a budget space shooter and the game play is easy going; which ideal for half an hours play here and there, or when you want to chill out; though the two X3 titles you bought should sate your appetite for space - the graphics for X3: Terran Conflict and X3: Reunion are amazing, with the game play emulating a realistic feel for space exploration (not that I know what it's like as I didn't manage to get on the space program, lol).

I went ahead and bought Project Freedom before I realized I already had it, lol (typical of me; I have quite a few game repeats on Steam, though most are as a result of package deals - oddly I've found I play those games more now than when I only had them as digital downloads from elsewhere or on disc)

Seeing all those games you'd bought spurred me on to preorder Painkiller: Ressurection, Dragonage: Origins Deluxe and Borderlands earlier today. I'll be ordering Left 4 Dead 2 next week and maybe Avatar: The Game. Though I think the latest Call of Duty is due sometime towards the end of November and I have definitely over spent this year (several times over)

To be honest, even though I think the Call of Duty franchise is fantastic, I reckon the games have very little replayability unless you're a keen online gamer, which I am not. I have been getting back into playing online recently (thanks to Wizzard), but I still prefer single player for most games, though I'd say Left 4 Dead is an exception and I reckon Borderlands is going to be similar as it also has a four person Coop team. The main problem (as I see it) with any Call of Duty title is the linearity of the games; you are forced to follow a specific path with no alternative pathways (which I suppose a lot of FPS games also have). I've never finished one Call of Duty game yet, and the last one, even though it's probably the best one, I've only played one mission; however, the reason for that was I bought Fallout 3 only a week after Call of Duty: World at War was released, so got side tracked and have never bothered to return.

Do you realize you're going to find it hard to decide which games to play now, lol. The more you have the harder it is to finish any one game, but you'll always find a game for whatever mood you're in. I like the present trend that seems to be growing; that is, mixing genres. I recently bought a game called Raven Squad (quite a good title, but not exceptional) thats actually a FPS and RTS combined. You can swap between an FPS viewpoint and a real time strategy (rts) viewpoint. When in the rts mode you can move your forces around as though you were playing an rts game, and take it the overall picture of the battlefield/scenario, then switch back to FPS.

On the other hand, Borderlands is a cross between an FPS and an RPG, which sounds interesting. (Killing Floor also has elements of RPG though it's technically a FPS) I'm looking forwards to trying Borderlands out, though I'm not sure about the graphics, which have been done in the Streetfighter IV and the more recent Prince of Persia style; that is the graphics look like they have been painted. The characters in Borderlands have black outlines as if they had been drawn with a black pencil.

I'm looking forwards to seeing what the game developers come up with over the next few years. Darkest of Days is another innovative game that has used a new engine that enabled over a hundred NPC's to interact with your character at any one time, which results in more realistic battles. You should see the World War I and american civil War battles, they are amazing. The technique is in it's early stages, but it's definitely worth checking out, (you can download a demo). However, that said, I'd get Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising first; which is another awesome game. I bought it less than two weeks ago and have played it for over 60 hours already. It's the most realistic battle orientated game I've ever played. The graphics are brilliant, the sound is amazing (definitely one of those games where turning up your 5:1 or 7:1 sound system on high volume is recommended for a more immersive experience) and I've found the game play amazing ([[i]It's that good it's managed to grab me away from Red Faction Guerilla, which is another amazing game). hopefully most of the games i've mentioned above will come up as deals on Steam over coming months.

Please excuse my waffling; my opiates have just kicked in, and I always get a little too talkative when that happens, lol.

I was thinking of seeing if anyone wanted to purchase Left 4 Dead at a discount by sharing the cost of the package deal they have. If you buy Left 4 Dead and Left 4 dead 2 you basically get the first one for £18. I'm not sure what they are charging across the pond in the U.S., but that's a great saving on the present price, though it may drop in price anyway soon after Left 4 Dead 2 has been released in 4 weeks time. (I presume you bought the package as opposed to seperately?)

OK, I did it WR. My big issue actually is time. My backlog is enormous. However, I love to try games so even if I only play a few levels (cities?) to check this out, it will be worth $5.

Wabbit, you're going to be the death of me yet. I just spent a couple hundred bucks on games, all based on your recommendations. Now you recommend another one so I rush to Steam to make a quick purchase for a game I know my computer can't run. Why did I do that Wabbit, why? Perhaps you could just start suggesting instead of recommending. Dear, dear, dear!!! Wabbit is trying to kill me.

Hi Campy,

A lot of reviewers have said the same thing, but I personally loved the game. For $5, it's worth it just to be able to walk through the gamework (IMO), lol.

I don't regret pre-ordering it and paying top dollar for it. For every person who thinks the game is brilliant, there's always one who thinks it's rubbish. Also (IMO) once bad reviews start to get noticed it always seems to me that more jump on the band wagon. Bad reviews are remmbered better than good ones. I disagree with a lot of the negative comments; it was a well constructed game, with enough to keep it interesting. Unfortunately, most games have lots of repetition, as does Assassins Creed.

I think this is an oppertunity missed for anyone who decides not to buy it on the basis of the bad reviews. Check out loads of you tube videos, they can give you an idea as to what to expect. there's plenty of them to see.

The only thing i dfound problematic initially was getting to grips with the controls. there seemed a lot of different combinations to remeber, bt as with any game, you soon get to remeber the keys instinctively. If you have a decent razer mouse you can program seven button to work around some of the combinations. :)

Let us know whether you buy it or not.

Regards

As I look at the reviews I am seeing brilliant graphics and good controls, but poor mission design, lots of repetition, few weapons and little character development. As a result, it sounds like it is great for the first couple of missions, but quickly gets old.

For $5, I may get it anyway. Still, I would be interested in comments from those that have played more than a couple of missions.

This is a brilliant game. Unfortunately it's only available at $5 in North, Central and South America until Thursday morning; everywhere else it's the usual price (which I think is still worth it) Grab this beautiful game while you can. Thankfully I've already got a copy (I bought it on pre-order so paid full price). It's a beautifully rendered game, with amazing visuals. Make sure your computer can cope with it before you buy though.

I'll repost the images tomorrow. They were some images I'd posted elsewhere which I'd not bothered to reduce in size.

Game Details:

Assassin's Creed™ is the next-gen game developed by Ubisoft Montreal that redefines the action genre. While other games claim to be next-gen with impressive graphics and physics, Assassin's Creed merges technology, game design, theme and emotions into a world where you instigate chaos and become a vulnerable, yet powerful, agent of change.

The setting is 1191 AD. The Third Crusade is tearing the Holy Land apart. You, Altair, intend to stop the hostilities by suppressing both sides of the conflict.

You are an Assassin, a warrior shrouded in secrecy and feared for your ruthlessness. Your actions can throw your immediate environment into chaos, and your existence will shape events during this pivotal moment in history.

Be an Assassin - Master the skills, tactics and weapons of history's deadliest and most secretive clan of warriors. Plan your attacks, strike without mercy and fight your way to escape.

Experience exclusive PC content - Four PC-exclusive investigation missions make the game an even better experience than its console predecessors, including the Rooftop Race Challenge, a race to a specified location and the Archer Stealth Assassination Challenge, where the player must assassinate all archers in a certain zone to help out fellow Assassins.

Realistic and responsive environments - Experience a living, breathing world in which all your actions have consequences. Crowds react to your moves and will either help or hinder you on your quests.

Scale buildings, mount horses, blend in with crowds. Do whatever it takes to achieve your objectives.

Intense action rooted in reality - Experience heavy action blended with fluid and precise animations. Use a wide range of medieval weapons, and face your enemies in realistic swordfight duels.
