This weekends Steam deal is 50% off Killing Floor, a great a;ternative to Valves Left 4 Dead. It's always been half the price of L4D but game play wise has been nearly as good. actually in some ways better. I've already posted lots of images above.

The game has had a recent update with the addition of more Vanilla maps and a new infected. There are also over 100 excellent custom made maps available for free download to add to the games maps. I still haven't played all of the free ones, but of those I have I found most of them nearly as good as the vanilla maps. This is well worth the measly £7.49 that Steam are asking over the weekend.

Gameplay Video:

You can watch several videos of game play, some are online coop play and a few are single player (they call it solo in this game). You can watch them HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE

The following video is a comparison between Killing floor and Left4Dead. It’s a bit weird because the guy doing the review is riding a motorcycle for most of the review. But I found it watchable and it did point out the differences between these two Zombie shooters. The video is in 2 parts and lasts for about 10 minutes.

Part one can be seen HERE, and part two HERE

The game has just been updated with the new (and free) downloadable content that I mentioned above in my first post. I was pleasantly surprised at all the changes, though I do think the new zombie additions have made it a little more difficult when set on the easiest settings for beginners. This may put some off playing. I was wiped out for a few levels before I got the hang of the changes. One of the extra zombies is called the husk, who can hit you with fire bolts from quite a distance. I was losing health very rapidly in the more open maps because of him. I found the flame thrower to be an effective weapon against him.

The Husk

The menu system for selecting weapons from the shop has changed significantly; (and for the better). The addition of several new weapons has given you a lot more choice with respect to the weapons you may choose. I like the Katana, which is surprisingly effective apart from against the bloats, who can spew acid onto you before you’ve had the chance to hack their heads off.

Zomie about to be beheaded by a Katana

I also love the new AA12 auto shotgun; though it has taken the sting out of the end of level boss, which I found used to be quite hard to kill, and you'd get him going invisible at least once or twice before managing to kill him (that's if you did, lol). now with the auto shotgun you can kill him before he manages to go invisible (he does this while rejuvenating from the wounds you've inflicted, but thankfully he can only go invisible a few times).

Display Settings

My overall feeling about the new upgrade is that it's made this game that much more playable and a lot more value for money. I don’t think the additional maps made much of an impact due to all the custom ps that have been added recently. They are very good maps though. My favorite is the woodland map (forgot it’s name), which is very atmospheric (as are most of the maps actually):

Plus there's a great incentive to purchase now as there's 25% off while the weekend promotion runs, plus very soon the winners of the second wave ( a map competition) should be announced and another larg influx of maps will be made available. I don't know how may entries have been put up in the second wave, but it's certainly going to take the number of maps avaialble for this game well over 100, which is a lot of game play.

Character Packs:

There are now two character packs; the first one called the Outbreak Character pack costs £1.49 and today a second character pack was released for £0.99 called the Nightfall character pack. Both packs add four additional player skins to the game. You can then change your playable character to the following (assuming you own the character packs):

Outbreak pack:

Agent Wilkes

Publicly, Horzine Industries was hard at work fulfilling an MOD contract to develop the world's most advanced combat armor. Privately, they were cloning a subterranean army of violent and unfortunate looking servants. As Wilkes will testify, having found and liberated their Mark 7 suit, they were great at multitasking.

Foundry Worker Aldridge

When you're being paid more than three times the expected salary for unskilled labor, you learn not to ask questions. When inhuman screams can be heard from further down the assembly line, you close the door and take lunch break. When the door flies off its hinges and a mangled combination of man and machine comes charging in - lunch break is over.

DJ Scully

DJ Scully was AWOL from the military and spending his nights in the London underground spinning dark drum and bass, working under the table for the many clubs in London. During one of his sets he witnessed all his fans get shredded to pieces by a giant creature with flesh blenders for hands. These unfortunate events have thrust him back into the combat he was running away from.

Dr. Gary Glover

As one of the only survivors from the Horzine Biotics Labs staff, Dr. Glover had a major hand in creating the horror that is now tearing London apart. As hard as he tries, he can't put this genie back in the bottle - not even with a double barreled shotgun.

Nightfall pack:

Mr. Foster

"The SuperFantastic life of a day trader and evening attraction at London's premiere karaoke bar". It's a shame no publishers are still alive to pick up Foster's half finished autobiography. The final chapter - An Orgy of Skull Cracking and Mutant Warfare in the Big City would have probably rocketed the book to the top of the best seller lists

Security Officer Thorne aka "Carnivore"

Horzine pays the bills. The wife is happy because we can eat again. I get to drink again. I'm happy. Salary bonus? Sure! I says. Experimental whats-its? Don't mind if I do. Should a seen it coming. On the bright side, I can bend things real good now. Metal, bones. anything. And the rats they throw me is tasty. I bet that science guy would be tasty, too. When I get out of here I'm gonna to tear off a little piece of him. Stupid science guy.

Lance-Corporal Lee Baron

What are the chances of a major downtown bomb-threat and a flesh eating mutant invasion occurring on the same day? Pretty good, apparently. The corporal's suit keeps him safe from flying debris, but the claws and teeth on those monsters rip right through it. Experience has taught him to put a little distance between himself and these flesh craving goons. As well as a pipe-bomb or three.

Mike Noble

When all that is left of your girl-friend are her partly-chewed legs, you have to wonder what sort of rave it had been. The wide variety of monster-things chasing you around in your skeletor costume make that pretty clear. While most people would wind up as a canapé for said monsters, luckily some latent psychopathic streak seems to have kicked in when our boy Mike found that nice, shiny Katana.

You have to go to the Profile & Achievements section (via the main menu) to change your character. There is no mention of enhancements when using these skins, so I presume there is no additional bonuses for using them; though you’d think using an asbestos suit would confer some degree of immunity from fire.

Development:

Here's an interesting aside about the development of Killing Floor. I'm actually amazed that I didn't know this as I am a big fan of Unreal Tournament modifications:

Killing Floor was originally a total conversion mod for the game Unreal Tournament 2004. Since the first release in 2005, the mod version had its fifth and final official update in 2008. While there was still development work done for a next update on the mod version, on March 2009 an announcement for a retail version of the mod went live.[6] With the help from the original mod-team, the developer company for this Steam-distributable game would be Tripwire Interactive, best known for their WWII simulation first-person shooter Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, which also originates as a modification for Unreal Tournament 2004.

In 2008, mod leader Alex Quick contacted Tripwire in order to negotiate about porting his mod to Red Orchestra and distribute it via Steam, similarly how Tripwire had already done with another Red Orchestra mod, Mare Nostrum. Apparently staff of Tripwire found Killing Floor's mod version so entertaining and close to a professional game that they offered to make it a stand-alone retail game.

I've just seen details of the up and coming free DLC for Killing Floor. There's a mass of content being added. The following is the article I read minus the images of the new maps I've referenced it at the end in case anyone is interested in checking out the images:

The new pack is the largest free pack ever offered by Tripwire and it includes a number of noteworthy additions. Players will be getting three new maps, seven new weapons, a brand new perk class, an extra level for all perks, a new terrifying enemy and the first ever total conversion mod for the game, Defense Alliance 2. We've just played through all of the new maps and tried out the new perk and the new weapons and lived (sort of) to tell the tale.

As if rave parties in abandoned asylums aren't already scary enough. The three new maps are each built around very compelling concepts. Bedlam takes place in an old abandoned asylum, which would be creepy enough by itself. On top of that, the asylum was recently the scene of a Halloween rave, so there are still lots of jack-o-lanterns and insane lights set up in the large common areas. The action here has a nice mix of tight corridors and large open areas so you'll want to think carefully about how you move and where you stand and fight.

The Wyre is set in the wooded hills of southern England. Players will start by a rather peaceful looking waterfall, but things soon turn horrific. The Zed will attack and push players deeper and deeper into the forests, eventually driving them towards an abandoned Horzine base. The base itself offers a bit of protection, and even a good view from the roof, but enemies will come hard and fast from multiple directions.

The final map in the update is the first winner in the recent custom map making competition, Killing Floor Grindhouse. Called Waterworks, this new map takes place in an abandoned pumping station. (Is everything abandoned in this world? Do we even need to keep saying that?) Like the other maps, this one moves from tight, restrictive areas to wide-open spaces. In this case, the map is dominated by a large pump room that offers lots of cover but also multiple points of entry.

The new top tier weapons give players a bit more room to grow. When playing the original version of Killing Floor, many players found themselves accumulating lots of extra money and having nothing to spend it on in the later stages. Once you got the AK-47 or hunting shotgun, there was very little for players to do at the trader beyond simply repairing body armor and filling up clips and magazines. This new update introduces a new third-tier weapon at the top of each weapon group, so those extra dollars won't be going to waste.

The Support class now tops off with a fully automatic AA12 Auto Shotgun that chews through large groups of enemies in a terrifyingly short time. As great as it is, you'll definitely want to make sure you're watching your ammo because it's very easy to expend it all if you're not careful. Likewise, the Sharpshooter can try out the new M14 Enhanced Battle Rifle and benefit from its new laser designator, accessible by using the middle mouse button. On the Commando side, players trade in their AK-47 for a new SCAR Mk 17, which is, in my opinion at least, one of the most enjoyable weapons in the game.

By far the most inventive of the new weapons is the Medic's MP7 Medic Gun. To lessen the need for medics to be right next to their teammates in order to heal them, the developers have upgraded this standard machinegun to shoot healing darts built with Horzine technology. Having the chance to heal allies at a distance definitely gives the medic more options when the action starts to get intense.

Reference HERE

W.R.

p.s.

I'll post some images of the new maps when they are released (though the third map is already available from the competition winners download).

I got light of Altair when it was included in the 5th year anniversay deals Great game.
As much as I want to purchase Win 7 I think I'll be leaving until the dust dies down. Maybe when they release a service pack. :)

Nice, I'm glad they finally figured out a time for this. I saw this posted last week in the forums, but they I guess they didn't have enough sign ups or something.
I've been wanting to test this since before it came out.

Thanks for posting, I had forgotten all about it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh man,I have to host that windows 7 launch party on the 22. I think my windows 7 party just became the The windows 7 Killing Floor Party.

Why would they do a promotion when millions of people arent going to be able to play for at least a day, some the one that reformat and install the whole thing, it could be a day or two, before they are up and going enough to be relaxed enough to play. games.
It me takes a minimum of half a day to get to that spot. Windows 7 isnt that bad yet, since there isnt 4 hours of updates.

whew, rambling
-------------------------------------------------------------
edit:new game at d2d, instead of posting it. I'll leave that to you

Light of Altair is a sci-fi colony building game with a deep plot. Grow colonies from landing pod to metropolis, while sending off new spaceships to expand your territory to other worlds. You are not alone in space, 8 factions from different parts of the world are all following their own agendas in the solar system; diplomacy and orbital-combat are essential to learn.

I though I’d bring this back to the front page before it got lost in the forum bowels, lol.

There's no doubt that this game looks dark and foreboding from the screen shots I've included here and above. Most of the levels are set amongst the detritus of a post apocalyptic city including residential and industrial areas; though there is a farm and a mansion level that are more rural. All the levels feel claustrophobic, though some like London enable you to run around freely from street to street and building to building. The farm level is a large expanse of fields set at night, with the odd farm scattered around. You have access to most buildings on the maps, which give the game a lot of freedom. All the custom levels I’ve tried so far are of a high quality. Waterworks reminds me a little of the official map called Foundry, but most are a lot different from the default (official) maps. One is set in a underground station, with a maze of corridors to navigate, whereas others are set amongst market places and army barracks. No two games are the same and the ability to configuration the game allows for a lot of tweaking, enabling gamers of all skills to have a challenging game, plus the perks system give you an incentive to continue with the game, if only to develop your characters attributes.

Character attributes

The three main differences between Left4Dead and Killing Floor are the graphics, Left 4 Dead are more polished, but that's not to say Killing floors graphics are poor; on the contrary, they are excellent, there's just not as much detail. Left 4 Dead is a a linear game, where you have to follow a particular path to complete each stage of the game. It has been made to look otherwise, but after playing each level a few times things definitely become a lot more familiar, whereas Killing floor, although the maps are smaller, you can go virtually anywhere; basically it's a sandbox type game. The final main difference (though I've not included the price difference) is that Killing floor is much more customizable.

The free Killing Floor weekend starts this Thursday.

The installed game is 3.6Gb in size. The best time to download it from Steam (that is to get the fastest download speeds) is between 4am to 9am GMT. At any other time the download speeds are compromised due to the large amount of traffic throughout the world, especially America. Just as an example one of my games which was around 4Gb took over 10 hours to download via a 10Mb broadband connection when I tried to install it during the day here in the UK; whereas the same game was installed onto another computer in little over an hour when I installed it between the hours mentioned above.

There are around 300 servers running this game so you're bound to find a server with good game play.

I'm hoping to run a server this weekend assuming there are a few community members interested. However, a trial run last night with Wizzard failed miserably. I'll be attempting to fix whatever problem arose before this weekend. So please do let me know below if you're interested in having a game. I’ll confirm whether or not I’ve managed to fix the problem before the weekend.

If you're not keen to play online for whatever reason; (I was reticent to play online for a long time, but when I did start to play with a small group of people regularly, it was a lot of fun), there is a solo campaign, so you can still really enjoy this game alone by playing the solo campaign. The game you get is the full version, so you'll also be able to play all the extra maps that are available. I've posted a separate thread in the games discussion forums with a link to extra Killing Floor maps. There are around 60 custom made maps available plus the official maps; and, a whole new bunch of custom maps are about to be released as well as a big DLC package….All or free. There is a add-on package you can buy for a few dollars that gives your character different skins, s that you can look a little different while playing online. It’s not necessary to buy this package though.

Killing floor is a great alternative to Left 4 Dead, and much cheaper. The last two videos above in my first post detail the differences between the games. I agree with the guy’s assessment of the games, even though he goes about it in rather an unusual way. :)

This is one of the best value for money zombie shooters (apart from Nation Red) that I’ve purchased this year, and considering I paid the same price for mot of my arcade games a few years ago, it’s great value for money (assuming you decide to purchase it after the free weekend.

Knowing what Steam is like, the free weekend may be extended a day or so, so it’s well worth downloading, even if you don’t intend to buy it.

There will be a Free weekend for Killing floor, a great cheap alternative to Left 4 Dead to celebrate the release of their largest free add-on release since the game was released earlier this year. We’ve already had a new level added recently, plus around 60 custom made levels taken from the first wave of a mapping contest. (A second Wave will soon be released though I'm not sure whether this add-on includes the best of the custom maps). The top 3 maps from wave one were nearly as good as the official levels that come with the game.

The free weekend starts this coming Thursday 22nd Oct and ends at midnight Sunday 25th Oct. all you need to do is make sure you have the free Steam client and create a free Steam account to download the game on Thursday. It may be possible to download the game before the start of the free weekend.

You can find details HERE

Running a coop server:

If enough community members decide to download and try this game out (I’ve never regretted buying it since it was released on Steam about 4 months ago). We could play some Coop games. You form a squad of up to six players ( you can choose from sharpshooter, medic, plus other classes, each having their own characteristics. (One of the videos below shows 40 players, maybe you can play as a zombie as well??)

You level up by attaining the specific goals for that particular class of soldier. and fight off hoards of zombies in various locations. At the end of a wave you have to find the armourer, who can be located anywhere on the map to upgrade your weapons, there’s flame throwers, rocket launchers, machetes, automatic rifles and shotguns, pistols, chainsaws, armour grenades and ammo plus more. The more zombies you kill the more money you earn to buy your upgrades. Weapons, ammo and armour can also be found throughout the levels as well.

This is a great coop game with excellent graphics and some pretty scary zombies. If you’re interested in playing some coop games over next weekend please post here to let me know. Nearer the time we can decide upon some times to meet online.
