Charlie, I decided to post again because I partially blew it. I didn't read Robert's posted error message. I don't have IE8 yet, and didn't realize this new error could be the result of an add-on. If 8's like 7 you can trouble shoot it by turning off all your add-ons. Go to your IE icon and right click on it. Select "start without add-ons" from the menu. If it then starts, you can open the properties dialog box either by selecting "Properties" from that right click menu, or - as you likely know - Tools>Internet Options from the menu when IE is open. It's the same box either way. Select the Programs tab and you can select "manage add-ons" and then scan for any funky looking add-ons, or, if nothing else, you can turn groups of add-ons on and off and try restarting until you find it.

If you don't want to go through all that, then you can always do the DEP exception. The problem with that, though, is you may still be working with an add-on that's either damaged or actually malware, and just masking it.

If you see this, good luck! With time, you should be able to fix it.

Charlie, have to agree with both Robert and Controlled. A Data Execution Prevention (DEP) error is almost certainly what you're seeing. It generally means that IE8 and your chipset, specifically your CPU, are fighting over some basic instruction. However, I'm not a big fan of Robert's fix. I believe in both using DEP and your User Account Control, which Robert's fixes recommend killing. The safer way would be to simply create a DEP exception for IE8 and any other software that DEP regularly fights with. That way you still have the other protections.

http://www.0xc0000005.com/dep-exceptions.html
Wikipedia's explanation of DEP:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Execution_Prevention

I like Controlled's suggestion on running IE8 inside Firefox. It's sort of what's called "using an emulator" to run the program. I plan to try his suggestion.

Still, for my money, Firefox is slightly overrated. People treat it like it's the be all and end all of browsers. But your going to experience some inconveniences that you have to learn to get used to or work around. Still, it's a really good browser and I certainly recommend you add it to your machine. And, like they say, there's a lot less hackers out there trying to attack it.

Hi Charlie

If you have problems with IE try using Firefox (FX) and install one of the addons that lets you use the IE browser engine within FX to go to sites that would perhaps have a problem with FX in it's standard configuration.

I use IETab for Firefox in FX and can view most MS sites including the windows update site, from here I can check and download any updates I that I need without even launching any version of IE itself.

Well worth a try.

Charlie,
Is this the error message you're getting using IE8?
If yes there's a fix for this on this page:
Fix Data Execution Prevention Error in IE8
But I would suggest to disable some of your add-ons afterwards ,enable IE8 dap protection again and see what happens.

While I agree that IE is to be avoided if possible, it is not always possible. I have several situations (currently and in the past) of sites that just do not work at all in any other browser. They are written explicitly for IE. A prime example of this situation is Pepsi's point program last year. The Pepsi site worked through Amazon.com for the "prizes" for the points and you had to order the items from the SPECIAL link through Amazon. It would not work in any other browser. Amazon insisted it did not know what you were wanting if you tried it in Firefox or Opera.

Microsoft's site also rarely works outside of IE.

For this reason, It is important to keep IE around. However, I have no idea as to the problem. I would first try to think of anything you might have changed just before it failed. Since it is not offered free, you might try to re-install IE. If all else fails, you can always contact Microsoft about the problem. The worst they can do is tell you they won't help (or will help at a fee).

Good Luck,

Diane

Charlie, I would suggest not using IE at all. Not just because there is an error, but in there is more malware written for it, less secure (this was actually improved with 8, but in my opinion, it is still less secure than the rest), less customization available, slow, and I find the interface annoying, but thats just a preference :P
My favorite browser is Google Chrome, which is very fast, clean, and secure, but it is very limited in customizations.
The other browser I would suggest is Mozilla Firefox, which is has a moderate speed (depends on what addons you have installed), but is the most compatible with websites, lots of customization, and is a very good all-around browser.
Just my thoughts :P
