Don't sound so suprised - You want stuff to go to the clipboard - Ctrl-C works everywhere else - why not here (ok - ignore the bit about highlighting text first).

Well that's my good deed for the day.

You wish to capture error message boxes?

Well when they appear hit PrtScn key just above insert to the right on most keyboards, then open paint or the utility I gave you as soon as you hit PrtScn button copies it to a viewr, in paint, click edit, paste.

How to copy/capture error message info - special thanks

I specifically joined this forum so I thank JEG88 for having the presence of mind to ask the question re CAPTURING ERROR MESSAGE DIALOGUE BOXES and the generous, informative BuBBy for providing such a nifty, easy answer utilising the clipboard. I have wanted to know how to do this for simply … forever!

For those who did not see the post, BuBBy’s answer was

“just copy the text of a standard dialog to the clipboard - just how you expect it should work, but probably never tried - because you thought - "Naah, that wouldn't work". Well it does.
Give the dialog the focus and hit ctrl-c. The contents of the error message should be in the clipboard and can be pasted into notepad or anywhere supporting plain text input.
An Example of this:
---------------------------
Open File
---------------------------
blah.fds
File not found.
Please verify the correct file name was given.”

So we have a new version to correct it?

I just started using FastStone Capture a few wks now. I really like it. One thing I need help w/ though. Sometimes I want to capture text when its not possible to do it by normal means -by highlightn it.-Like when u get an error message & u want to save it for future reference, but u cant highlight it, so I 'Print Screen'.-But that makes a pic
which u can crop but can't grab or highlight the Text. -At least I haven't figured out how it is possible. I tried opening it w/ wordpad but u cant grab the text there either. ~~~Does anyone know how to do this ?? -I'd appreciate the help,-THANKS!~~

Maybe I got it wrong.

http://picpick.wiziple.net/forum/

Is an un-customised default install of a forum with 3 registered users and 12 posts (5 made yesterday, and 6 asking why the internet callback - which to his credit, the author is removing because he didn't realise it would be a "big deal").

So I looked at that and thought... hmmm this looks like it was put together a week ago, and isn't "serious". Sure the program might be really good - but presentation and first impressions count for a lot with me.

Yes I found "the post" which details the features (in English) at http://picpick.wiziple.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3

I am not saying that I think picpick is a bad program (it is running in my system tray at the moment) - and I am not levelling any personal criticism at yourself. Lee, I am simply highlighting an alternative that I believe some people might find to be "more friendly" and with more complete English support and written tutorial documents offer a helping hand for people who perhaps haven't used screen capture or image editing software before.

I'm just happy to offer people another choice. Honestly, I don't get into the fanboy religious wars with software, because I really don't give a damn what others choose to run on their computer - that's their problem. :)

I thought you were smart BuBBY, as you would have realised the link I gave was to satisy English language speakers, which the majority of this website is.

The software comes in two languages, English and Korean, Korean being the coders language.

You can visit the Korean website and count how many users that are there.

Yeah I had some problems with the skins (which I have changed back to "Windows Classic") and I also had problems resulting in Dr Watson making frequent after-hours house calls. Once the final non-beta version 3 was released - it's health has improved 100%

Hi BuBBy! I love FastStone Capture and I have told many of my friends about it. I haven't used FastStone Image Viewer much, because it crashes when I browse folders. Maybe I will play with it again. As I don't think I rebooted after I installed it. Maybe it will work now since I have rebooted since then. ;)

Downloading a program from a blind link in a forum that has 12 posts and 3 users - and the home page http://wiziple.net/tt/145 which is not in English makes it hard for me to even give picpick a fair go. (Hey don't blame me - if I seem picky).

I'm sorry Lee, but my vote for best freeware in this category must go to the FastStone graphics utilities.

Oh and the FastStone programs come with exe installers, or portable versions (suitable for a USB Key). And a well written tutorial. And no mysterious, unexplained internet connections calling home. And... just go have a look at it. :)

For most operations I can ditch PaintShop Pro and Photoshop - the FastStone programs are small, quick, stable and very capable.

FastStone Image Viewer for Windows (Currently version 3.0)
http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, stable, user-friendly image browser, converter and editor. It has a nice array of features that include image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping and color adjustments. Its innovative but intuitive full-screen mode provides quick access to EXIF information, thumbnail browser and major functionalities via hidden toolbars that pop up when your mouse touches the four edges of the screen. Other features include a high quality magnifier and a musical slideshow with 150+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image annotation, scanner support, histogram and much more. It supports all major graphic formats (BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, animated GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA) and popular digital camera RAW formats (CRW, CR2, NEF, PEF, RAF, MRW, ORF, SRF and DNG).

FastStone Capture (Currently Version 5.3)
http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm

FastStone Capture is a powerful, flexible and intuitive screen-capture utility. It allows you to capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, freehand-selected regions and scrolling windows/web pages. It has innovative features such as a floating Capture Panel, hotkeys, resizing, cropping, text annotation, printing, e-mailing, screen magnifier and many more.

Downloads:
