I actually don't work anywhere near a computer, but I still do a lot of necessary stuff (school, game development, etc) on it, and my time is valuable. I have just really grown to despise the 2-3 emails that I get daily that are unnecessary (not always emails), and knowing there are probably many others like me, I hope this can be fixed :P

Ahh, I see what your talking about, thenameipicked, yea time is definitely a factor especially if your at work.

Your waiting for the page to load, the boss comes around the corner, you can't do anything cause its loading. Then a pm pops up from here asking about a game or a program while your at work.
It could present a problem.

-----------------------------------

I found the program I was talking about and they still don't have one for vista. It kick A@# for 98 and xp. I skipped ME. It's called cablenut from tweakxp.

Here's tweakxp's site, so people wanting to test can see it comes through a legite site though they weren't around in the W98 days.
http://www.tweakxp.com/article37124.aspx

heres the cablenut site.
http://www.cablenut.com/
http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10062-108-78501.html?tag=upd
update here that adds it the registry to
http://www.broadbandnuts.com/files/CABLENUT_UPDATE....--EDIT-- please no direct download link---
I run xp in virtual pc, I'm gonna have to try it for old timm sakes. I remember it made a difference for broadband, but dialup. It was the difference between night and day. Any dial up users reading, I suggest trying it.

Well, first of all, I was talking about time-bandwidth. Not necessarily speed-memory-bandwidth. But other than that... I *do* prefer the old PM system. Yes, the entire thing, including the big numbers when I got a message, the emailing actually working...and in all reality, I am very against program sharing, so I like the admin-only PMs.

Wow...that was unintentionally quite a downer paragraph :P
Just my thoughts

sounds like that program that tweaked the Maximum Transmission Unit to keep from having packets broken up into 2 chunks. default was 1500, 1492 usually helped out- problem is, I can't find where to plug that into either of my routers, but since I get near the advertised speed on the speedtest sites, I haven't worried that much about it. pron sites? seems like I have to work to avoid getting shunted to one or another of the *)*&(^)&* things.

Bittorrent and UseNet are my big bandwidth grabbers these days. That and sending huge batches of photos around. I never watch youtube videos directly, I download them.

I live in Drain, Oregon- according to wikipedia, "Drain is a city in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,021 at the 2000 census. The 2007 estimate is 1,075 residents. Drain, Oregon is the only community named "Drain" in North America."

it is a little funny the way the private IM emails show up from 2 different 'sender' addy's, so I get them sorted into 2 different folders. strange.

You definitely sound like you know a thing or 2 about bandwidth.

I just know that I have a 3megabit, not byte right, dsl service. I have vonage hooked up to it and I am always downloading everyday. I didn't know if he was on dial up or lower dsl.

Some companies like comcast I think hammer users on their bandwidth. I live in a 2,000 person town surrounded by farmers, so the bandwidth is far from used up. That and competition is coming soon, cable with the works.

I'm not a big youtube watcher and dont care for P sites.I occasionally watch some shows, like watch the guild. They have a new season that started with some new episodes coming out.

You just reminded of that old program that speed up dial up or ethernet connections, but to use the advance tab you needed to know what you were doing. Now I'll have to find it.

If you think a youtube video is bad, try having a gigapixel panorama dropped on ya. I may have a gig of storage to play with at need, but that takes some serious download time, even at 10 mips.

repeated pm notices would be a piece of cake... but then I am on an all-I-can-snag plan.

I can remember having email sized hunks hurt back running on a 300 baud acoustic modem back in the day, though. no local storage, just a video terminal.

then BBS'ing at 2400 baud mixed with long distance... ow. Ya.

Not every time, but sometime I get my own. The worst thing I have noticed is a sometimes there's a huge delay in getting emails from a pm, like 4 to 6 hours. I've even been online the whole time.
I imagine the delay has to with the how much the server is getting hit and how many downloads are going own. Pm's and emails get shifted back to a lower priority, but as the pm poster getting an email to. This could be a bug or maybe they meant to do it.

I'm no expert on bandwidth, but I don't think a pm is anything to worry about. A video from youtube, yes. But I could be wrong.

I wonder what the verdict will be.

Hey, there is a bug with the getting-an-email-with-private-messages system.... aka EVERY reply (including my own) after that will send me a new email. Is it possible that the PM's I send don't waste my own bandwidth??? Thanks :P

EDIT: Totally forgot to put this in the right folder, sorry.
