Why would you purchase a license for something you got from GOTD for free?

Unlike the Giveaway version of the software – A purchased license is usually entitled to.

1. Tech Support
2. Future Software upgrades & updates (bug fixes, improvements, new features)
3. Can install and reinstall the software as required. (not limited to installing during the 24hr giveaway)

Sometimes:

4. Additional discounts on other products from the same developer.

Yes in terms of software features, the Giveaway “free version” is the same as the “purchased version” – but as listed above there are other entitlements available only to users who purchase a license (as opposed to users running only the “free version” from GOTD).

Finally, by purchasing a license it is more likely the developer will continue to support and improve that software (and that is really what you want).

The GOTD Activate.exe or Setup.exe gives me an error that it cannot connect, yet I can download the program, read the comments, or see the forums.

The first three things to check.

1. Is Internet Explorer able to connect to the internet. Even if you use another browser to browse the internet, the GOTD activation/setup process will use the Internet Explorer "engine" to connect. Make sure also that Internet Explorer is not set to "work offline".

2. Make sure your internet connection isn't configured to use a proxy server. One way to test if a proxy server is detected is to visit http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and check the results that will mention what type of proxy server is in use (if any).

3. Is your firewall blocking activate.exe or setup.exe from connecting to the internet? If you are unsure, try temporarily disabling the firewall before trying again.

4. Reboot and wait 5 minutes and try again (in case the problem is related to busy servers).

What is GOTD?

GOTD is the official abbreviation for Giveaway Of The Day.

Shouldn't there be an "A" in there too?

No. The correct word is "Giveaway". It is a single word. There are many interesting typos, like GOATD, GOTAD GAOTD, or GATD. But the correct abbreviation is GOTD. If you can't manage this, we generally get the idea of what you meant to say. With practice most people eventually get it correct. :)

also see http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/6815

Commenting about the negative comments number. I just discovered that if I +ed someone, they would lose a plus (+), but if I -ed someone they would lose 2 pluses (+).

So maybe the thought of people being trigger happy is actually the GOTD online software running amuck!

So GOTD please fix the numbering system. I certainly don’t want to take away for a person that I wish to support. Therefore, until this problem is fixed I shall not + or - anyone at all!! :-(

The reason why you can vote + and see 5 +'s or even a - is simply because voting is going on all the time while the page is loaded (in the background) but the votes only update when you reload or vote. While a user might see +5 in the voting - because others are also voting - it might actually be +3 at the instant when you click to vote +. Instead of seeing +6 you see +4 which is actually the up to the second correct total. It is possible there could be dozens of votes every second while you are reading the page - which is why the "last loaded" vote seems to be incorrect when the page is reloaded or you place a vote.

I hope that explains the voting a little better.
