I'm using the last version of Commodo w/o the suite. Great program.
The free Avast A/V is the least obtrusive one (by far) that I've come across.
You'll be glad AVG is gone!

It's already done did. When I first tried installing it said McAfee was already running and to uninstall that first.. so did that. Then it immediately did updates.. so now just have to get used to it asking me to block/ignore when until it's 'trained'.

I would have Comodo's installer up and ready, and then uninstall McAfee. Just seems a little safer to me.

Download the new anti-virus but remove the existing one BEFORE you install the new one. There always seem to be problems if one is there. In fact, in many cased, you cannot install with one already there. It detects the existing one and tells you to remove it first.

I would disable the internet during the actual install and then re-enable it for any update check that always should be done when installing a new product. Your download may not have the latest version of the program or the definitions.

You're right Dragonlair. I removed AVG from my machine a long time ago.. it took things over and I don't like that.
I think I'll go with Comodo.
Now.. what comes first, the chicken or the egg.. should I first remove McAfee before installing Comodo? Or install Comodo and then remove McAfee? Thank goodness for Revo uninstaller!

I found AVG to be a resource hog. I had one game that had trouble with the "win music" and as soon as I removed AVG and replaced it with Avira, it worked fine and that's been well over a year.

Also, I found AVG's support to stink! I get very good support from Avira Personal. I've reported about 4 false positives and got pretty fast response and correction. One file was over their 8 Mb limit but they have standard procedures for handling that case. That big file was one of Alawar's games.

No Mike, hadn't thought about that but I just did an online search, and found Commodo has got both virus and firewall.. so does Zonealarm. Found AVG but that just seems to be anti virus.
And thanks Dawn.. I also listen to Kim Komando and subscribe to her newsletters. So just might go that route.. I respect her opinions.

I also use Comodo. I really like it. I got it from the Kim Komando website (komando.com) . She has a variety of free firewalls, antivirus, & spyware programs in her download section under the security section.

Hi.. I've used McAfee for years and it's due for renewal Oct. 10th. I've got both their virus protection and firewall. Is there anything else I can replace it with so I don't have to pay for it again?
I know this has come up many times before, and I might already have the programs needed on my machine, (that aren't running), thanks to GOTD.. but I've got so many things, I've forgotten what does what!! Any advice would be appreciated before I renew again. Don't want to go unprotected since my machines on 24/7!
