Hello everyone,

Thank you so much for your advice! In the end I phoned AVG and discovered the pop-up was indeed triggered by them.
It seems I wasn't the only one who phoned and gave them an earful; they've been flooded with calls. Well, I mean to say -- what were they thinking?!

PS .How to uninstall AVG:

Quoted from Big Al from the AVG forums

Quote:
- Download AVG uninstall/cleanup utility and run it ( if running Vista or Windows 7: remember to right-click on it and choose "Run as Administrator"):

http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/support/
(please add "avgremover_en.exe" at the end of the link)
-Robert-

- After restart please remove these folders*:

Windows XP/2000
C:\Program Files\AVG or C:\Program files(x86)\AVG (for 64bit OS)
C:\Documents and settings\All users\Application data\AVG8

Windows Vista
C:\Program Files\AVG or C:\Program files(x86)\AVG (for 64bit OS)
C:\ProgramData\AVG8
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\AVG8

* Some files or folders could be hidden by default. This can be changed in Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View tab -> Show hidden files and folders.

The free versions of AVG and Avira are bloated with promo-ware nowadays, offering their paid versions.
Now it could be you accidentally clicked on one of those banners and upgraded to a (time limited)paid version.
Check your license no.It should read something like 8FREE- at the beginning.

But to be on the safe side,my advice to you would be to download and install the latest free Avg version (when done removing your present version - you might have to reboot a couple of times)

Be sure you opt out of things you don't want to be installed.
And don't forget to do the full system scan notblocklox suggested
My 2cents.

In this case I definitely would mail to AVG and ask them, search for the usual email address, not an address from this very suspicious pop up. I would think when you have a registered AVG programme, they would not notify you via a pop up.
Especially after that "red shield safety warning" I would be concerned. Don't forget to scan your system for malware.
Better safe than sorry!

Take the link that they provide for you and WOT it. (go to mywot.com and enter it in) That should tell you whether it is safe or not. Also, look at the root of the link and make sure it matches the AVG address perfectly. If all that turns up positive, then you are ok.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else here uses AVG and has had a pop-up appear claiming the license number has been changed and adding a helpful link ("save number to Windows clipboard").

This message appeared after I had a red shield safety warning this morning, and I'm seriously suspicious about it. I went to the AVG website to see if there was any info, but found nothing. Can't see why they'd need to change the number!

I'd appreciate some advice from more experienced computer users here in the forums.

Thanks

Tizz
