Goody.. a belated Happy, Happy birthday!
Glad you mentioned the freezer.. now we get to start from scratch here.. guess I'm being punished for being a food pack rat! When things are on special I tend to buy extras. We have a big upright freezer in our shed outside the kitchen door. A couple days ago asked hubby to bring me in a pkg. of American cheese. (Usually buy a 5-lb. pkg. at Sam's Club, then break into sections and freeze in baggies.) A day & a half later, we had to get something in the shed, he said "is the freezer defrosting?" Water all over the floor. NOOOOO... he had NOT shut the blasted door all the way when getting that cheese. Everything in there had defrosted! Read online it's not safe to refreeze certain things when there are no ice crystals left, especially frozen veggies, meats, fish, etc. So, as of today, we have to unload everything and take it all to the trash. All the frozen Hungry Man TV dinners, frozen pizzas, frozen Stouffer's meals, sirloin tip roasts, lamb chops, burger, frozen fries, fish sticks, home made meal size packets of meatballs & sausages for when we have spaghetti, you name it! Arggggggh! Today we start double bagging big green trash bags, and take a couple bags at a time, otherwise too heavy!

Now back to the subject of spilling things and crumbs .. awhile back I bought a couple "waterproof" computer keyboards. Haven't have to put them to the test yet, but just a suggestion for protecting things from spills. I usually have a cup of coffee while sitting here and try to be really careful!

I may have to explain myself about the sippy cup for people outside Canada. The States may say the same thing.

A sippy cup is a covered plastic bottle that is like a water bottle where you have to suck on the end of it to get the liquid to come out. It uses pressure to stop the liquid from coming out if you knock over the cup. It is much beter than a water bottle in this case. The sippy cup is great for 2 to 3 year olds. Canada also has covered cups for travel but I just had to make a joke about the sippy cups with Whiterabbit's orange juice problem since most kids would have orange juice in a sippy cup. Again do NOT put pop or any fizzy drink in one.

another year older and deeper in debt- except this turnip don't buy on credit. da big five-oh-my-god.

the menu got changed when the weather whiplashed today, and I crawled out to the freezer and couldn't find a steak easy. so it's broiled marinated boneless pork chops.

I still wonder why more people don't 'weatherize' equipment on the cheap- plastic 'cling/food film', applied loosely over the top and stuck underneath on keyboards, (rubber band or tape around the cord) is cheap, doesn't keep the keyboard from doing just fine or messing up the feel, and makes it immune to anything short of battery acid. it gets scuffed or torn, replaces easy and cheep.

taped-on flaps of opened up gallon ziplock bags to shed stuff from the optical and floppy drives and connectors are easy, just give the cooling vents room.

unless somebody's more interested in looks than working good, why not?

optical mice mostly shed liquids well, and as long as you dry them well after, *can be washed out and off*. most low voltage electronics aside from speakers are the same way. keyboards they just use easily corroded crap to print the membranes these days... but mice still use cherry-type long-life switches.

when the fans stick too much dust too hard on my motherboards, I pull them out, set the cpu aside- and wash 'em in the kitchen with a soft brush, memory and cards separate. rinse real well. stick 'em in a cheap fruit dehydrator for a day or so, and reassemble. <shrug>

optical mouses all around, lower desktop keyboard's covered with plastic film, upper dt it's above the lower monitor, laptop's armored in freezer-class ziplock PETM all 'round- all's fair game for me. dinner, snacks, coffee- not a problem. lower tower and monitor are raised above the desk, (on stacked dead or obsolete cd-dvd drives- I recycle, y'see...) other computers in the 'puter room are on the wall chest high and 6 feet away.

I've learned prevention by forethought is the best...

I'm gonna get a couple of those sealed silicone ones when one of the dt kb's dies from overwork. <grin>

it's me birthday, so a nicely broiled marinated steak, roasted yams and fresh-steamed green beans are tonight's 'snack'.

I'll bet after having to do all that cleaning up, the way you had to do it, with your back and all, you will use a covered cup or bottle from now on, eh? Heck, though, we've all had some kind of thing like that happen, either by our selves, or our kids...(chuckle).

In Canada we call a covered cup a sippy cup;-) They work wonders. Kids can knock them over and nothing spills. Orange juice would work in them. Once I gave my son a sippy cup with pop (fizzy drink) and what a mess. The pop found places to leak out that it should not have. I should have known this because once I put pop in a thermos. When it was time for lunch I opened my lunch box and everyone started to laugh. Everything including my sandwich was floating in pop.

Back to the computer. I have my tea with me but I either place it on the desk behind me or far away from the keyboard. I did eat chips when I was playing Half Life 2 but your hand gets greasy and I hate this. Also I would have to pause the game. I think I will stick with tea or the odd can of pop.

I only allow drinks, which are usually placed away from the computer i'm working on. Two days ago I had some things placed in front of one of the computer monitors and had cause to move my orange from its normal resting place. I then picked up something which knocked the orange juice (A full glass) all over my router and down the back of the desk. Thankfully it missed my new Logiteh G15 keyboard and 3Razer copperhead mouse (i would have been really mad at myself if they had been damaged as I've only had them for a month. The router has air vents on the top, which are recessed, so the orange naturally started to fill the inside of the router. Amazingly, (despite not disconnecting the power immediately), no damage was done to the router. I just disconnected it and opened up the case, removed the circit board, then cleaned the inside with damp wipes before drying everything off. Then I had to crawl under the desk in between two computers and a mass of cabling from two speaker sytems (both 5:1 systems), to soak up, then clean the mess behind the desk. It took me ages as all the cabling had sticky orange on it, so I had to individually wipe each cable. It was extremely difficult because of my injured back. Though i'm still drinking orange juice at the desk, lol. (I only drink fresh orange juice and water)

I always have my afternoon tea(hey my dad was a Scot and I am Canadian!) at the computer(no I am careful not to sit the cup anywhere by the computer nor the keyboard)
Cookies tend to appear at this time but again, the crumbs usually stay away (lucky I can whiz my keyboard in and out on its little shelf, in time with the actual crunching of the cooky at hand...lol!)

I'm on a budget so the Wheat thins aren't always name brand and the gummi snakes may not be there, but when did the computer get a snack life all it's own?
So do any of you have computer snack habits? Mundane, weird or wacky, let me know I'm not alone!
