Thanks for the replies and I have found a simple solution for fixing the Arial font that may be useful if other fonts play up.

Firstly, it was remiss of me not to mention that I use a laptop which only has a recovery disk not installation disks.

Secondly, jlouis7518 and Buzz thanks for the link to dafont but I couldn't find a basic version of Arial that was free.

Thirdly, watcher13 thanks for the tip about using notepad to check - it's one of those d'oh moments when something is so obvious once someone has pointed it out.

The Solution:
Move the font file from Windows/Fonts to another folder, and then install it from that other folder. The regular style has miraculously re-appeared!!! (and Streaming Video Recorder now works)

Thanks all.

Spodo, I did some quick research on this and it's not unique to today's software. It appears it's either a temporary compatibility glitch or Arial is corrupted. No big deal in either case.

Some people have said that they have had programs give them this error and it was because Arial's corrupted. This probably happens with fonts more than we realize it, but we notice it on fonts like Arial only because they're so commonly used. (It's certainly my favorite.) If you want to test it, you can open Notepad, select format>fonts and you'll, of course, get your font dialog box. Select Arial, if it isn't already, and regular should be one of the options. If it isn't, the font's corrupted.

You can replace it from the internet - just make sure you don't overwrite with an earlier version - or XP has a repair option from your setup disks that allows you to only have it replace any corrupted files from the original setup. Don't remember, though, if there's any issues with it changing settings. Don't think they're are.

Some have reported, though, that the softwares they were having problems with were just glitching. One fixed it with a reboot - they were probably files or settings in the original setup that didn't install right without reboot, whether it was intentional or not. Another fixed it by moving Arial out the fonts folder. The offending program then opened correctly. They then closed the program, moved Arial back in to the folder, and the program opened correctly thereafter.

Good luck! Let us know what happens.

I think you can get it off your WinXP disc (if you have one). Just look through the i386 folder on the disc and look for arial. Copy it to your computer, rename the extention to .cab, and extract it. Then right click and install.

I have a problem with today's giveaway Streaming VIdeo Recorder which I think I also had with another program recently, and that is when I try running it I get this error - Font 'Arial' does not support style 'Regular' .

My laptop is XP + SP3 and as far as I'm aware I've never overwritten the default fonts that came with the machine, so is the solution to download a version of the Arial font? and if so, which would be the best (free) site for doing this? Or is there a general setting for the default font to be used by programs that could be changed and thus might make the problem simply go away?

Thanks in advance...
