Oops, I almost forgot,

Here is a freeware unzip program I absolutely love-
(the author accepts donations, but there no ads or nags in the program)

http://www.extractnow.com/

It unzips files much faster than the windows extract program does.

Swan,

FileAmigo is free database software, but it doesn't have password protect like MS Access does.
I have the free version. It took about 3 or 4 minutes to install. Winpatrol and ZoneAlarm only gave standard warnings about new program being added, anmd it uses the windows help system etc,. It seems like a safe program.

Pro:
-Gives a choice to have help automatically displayed on first start.
-templates inventory, resumes, project planning, address book, etc...
-easy to change templates by changing data record design.
-small. FileAmigo file = 13.5M download. 5.4M folder after install.

cons-
- Not as pretty as the Works database, but not as large either.
It has a free version, a web version(with passwords), and a LAN version.

http://www.fileamigo.com/Home.htm

It has good review from the people at download.com. Someone said that you can't do reports, but I've been able to.

http://www.download.com/FileAmigo-LE/3000-2065_4-10442117.html?tag=tab_pub

If you don't mind Microsoft products, you can pick up Works 8 for about $50. It's not as bloated as office (that's rather relative, of course) but it is easy to use and a relatively good bargain for a full Microsoft suite. The database interface is nice. We had to reinstall it once on my husband's computer after a system restore, but it hasn't been a problem other than that.
Pros-
-Beautiful interface. Absolutely gorgeous.
-also has templates (more can be found on the web).
-helpful tips in bottom bar.
-Very detailed and simple to understand. Microsoft obviously wanted to make this easier to use than access.

Cons-

-SIZE 153M works folder!

Neutral-

-Integrated suite with calender, word, spreadsheet, etc. rather than a stand alone ap.

Open office also has a database component, but, like works, it's more of an integrated suite solution.

Good luck!

Hello everyone,

I'm currently hunting down some database creation software and thought that such a product might be popular among GOTD business members. I pretty much need to create one in the next 3 months and have found that like Access and Excel, the ones I've found need you to have quite a bit of knowledge in database creation - not to mention that it's pretty pricey software.

I pretty much need a Database Builder for Dummies program that GOTD might consider as a free offer in the future. In "googling" for such software, I could only really come up with one that would fit my needs.

Perhaps other people are able to find more?

Brilliant Database

Please give this one a thought GOTD ...

@rtlouren I really, really, really would like to get some free software to add comments and/or use text tools (like highlighters) on PDF files.

Something like this, perhaps?

The PDF-XChange PDF Viewer (Free!) - View, Print, Export Text & Images and add content to PDF files......

Free PDF Reader - Version 1.5.990
eXPert PDF Reader is a free pdf viewer software that lets you view and print and modify existing PDF documents. You may modify document outlines, insert rubber stamps and modify any annotation that has been created.
http://www.visagesoft.com/products/pdfreader/

Tomahawk PDF+ 2.7.2 (last freeware version) gives you a complete PDF file creation suite right on your computer.
http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/util/pdf.html

Hi,

I've enjoyed several of your give aways, but I really, really, really would like to get some free software to add comments and/or use text tools (like highlighters) on PDF files. Can you try to get something like this? There are several programs that do this, but I don't think any of them is free (Adobe Professional, Foxit, Very PDF PDF Editor, just to mention).

I'm new to GOTD, but having a great time so far - software junkie that I am. I appreciate your service. Can't say what you might have featured in the past that is similar, but I'd like to suggest Bee Icons, if they will work with you.

"Bee Icons can replace almost any system icon with a more stylish and improved version. You can change Desktop icons, Start Menu, Hard, Floppy and Compact Disk icons. You can also assign unique pictograms to any folder or file type. Bee Icons allows you to change just one or two icons, or you can apply an entirely new icon set to the desktop using Icon Themes. Currently, there are more than 100 unique Icon Themes to choose from."

http://www.beeicons.com/
(Would have made that a link, but I have no idea what you mean by "backticks.")

Hector, dropped by your site and left an attaboy .. while downloading the program. WOW! You are definitely on the cutting edge. And I'm going to take Wolven's cue and develop a list for my insurance purposes, also .. paired with digital pictures, the insurance company should have no problem accepting your program's print outs as evidence in the event of a loss.

I'm glad you talk about the insurance thing. It's not the first time I hear about it, but I still don't understand how it works... How can a list prove anything ? You could have added DVDs that you didn't have... Are you sure insurance take this seriously ?

Thanks H!

Take your time - I can wait.

I'm not concerned with the shopping side. I just like to have a hard copy for insurance purposes, and secondly, for portability (take from room to room).

I'll use AMC until you have it done, then I'll switch to something a little 'Cooller'.

Wolven "Need that print function!"

Ok, I'm convinced ! It's indeed very useful to have your list with you when you go shopping, and not too hard for me to add. I'm still struggling with the next 1.04 release, but right after (one or two weeks), 1.05 will have the printing :))

lwbjag, the Jinzora software will catalog music AND digital videos.

It will allow you to perform those functions on multiple computers, too, unlike iTunes or WMP.

As an aside, when I used Deligio (the freeware/shareware search engine) to search for video organizers, Coolector is the only one that appeared! Good job, Hector .. you're on the cutting edge!

Thanks lwbjag.

I once used an older version of AMC which had warts. I'll try it again when I have time (just d/l'd it now) and check the features. Need that print function!

Cheers.

"Wolven", Bobby and Hector. FYI I found another free site & posted it in the "Coollector" forum. It looks interesting.

"Bobby" - Thanks for your suggestions. They both look good for music. I am needing to catalog my videos. The best freeware I've found is "Coollector", mentioned earlier in this topic.

LWBJAG, try Musik Cube, http://www.musikcube.com/ , and Jinzora, http://www.jinzora.com/ . Both will catalog your music, with style.

I'm ok with a link, if it doesn't look like spam ;)
