It's a step in the right direction for Nero - but not far enough. The free version is too crippled to make it a viable alternative to choose over other freeware options that can do much more. Even running the Freeware version of Nero doesn't give a good sample of what the full Nero Burning Rom is capable of.

An Analogy of what Ahead (Nero) is offering would be if Microsoft released a free version of Microsoft Word. The only catch would be you can only save or print the first page of the document - and only use the fonts that come installed with Windows. It's perfect if you only want "Brief Word" for short messages or notes - but if you plan on writing anything significant - those features are available only in the commercial version.

If it's just a program that does just about everything you could possibly ask with CD, DVD and BD then ImgBurn is miles ahead.

The only negative for ImgBurn is the interface can take a little while to come to terms with Especially if you are expecting the dual pane explorer style windows when premastering a standard data disk (I think I spent about 30 minutes to check out everything and burn my first disk). As long as you are prepared to not write off ImgBurn in the first hour and you are prepared to use help if you get stuck (I haven't had to use it yet) then you will see why more and more people are choosing ImgBurn as their preferred choice.

For those who remember when the useful program DVDDecrypter was "shut down" by the authorities, well ImgBurn became the next big project for developer "LIGHTNING UK!" - and it also has the same attention to quality and detail as DVDDecrypter had.

Nero is popular for their feature filled, yet expensive, burning software. Well today Nero has released a stripped down free version of Nero 9:

2009-07-30_133341

To be honest, sure this may look like Nero is being generous finally offering a free version of their software, but, and I am being very blunt here, this free version of Nero 9 is useless. It can only burn data or copy CD/DVDs. That is it. It can't make audio CDs, burn or create ISOs, author DVDs, etc.; it is truly stripped down. My suggestion would definitely be Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 over this but for Nero lovers who can't afford to purchase the full version of Nero... this is an early birthday present?

Nero 9 Free is a 55 MB download and works on x86 and x64 Windows XP, Vista and Win7. You can get Nero 9 Free from the following link:
http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero9-free.php

Ashraf is right, Nero is just getting people to taste it, then people will eat it. (e.g. want to buy it)

Well, if you can burn your files and softwares to disk using this software, then that's cool.

Nero uses a very good burning engine.

If Nero see a lot of people downloading this, they might bring out a nero basic without

all the clutter no-one really wants for a decent price.

All I want is a software program that burns error free my files to DvD, CD, HD or Blu-Ray disk.

I don't want to have a backup app, as I use ghost, nor do I want a music app, a photo app or anything else than I mentioned.

This will maybe get through to them.

Nero 6 a bit like easy cd creator 4 went rubbish when they started to bloat up their products.

Nero 9 Free is a 55 MB cut down, Nero 7 size 200 MB all most I think

Almost worthless !

Check here for what the excellent Ashraf says about it: http://dottech.org/headline/7887

Here is part of his commentary: "I am being very blunt here, this free version of Nero 9 is useless. It can only burn data or copy CD/DVDs. That is it.

It can't make audio CDs, burn or create ISOs, author DVDs, etc.; it is truly stripped down."

======================================================================

In my opinion (which is shared by other friends and even some sites), this freeware is much better: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=news

Here is what lifehacker says about it: http://lifehacker.com/5323895/imgburn-updates-adds-advanced-features-fixes-bugs

It's called Nero Startsmart Essentials.
Nero has been the best burning program around for years ..and still is.
But this is an ultimate cutdown version of Nero Essentials. It's Windows7 compatible and upgradable to the full version ,but I can't even find a way to burn isos.

Lee - what a good chap you are! Thank you for this, which incidentally downloaded like a dream.

I used to use Nero years back and am looking forward to giving it another shot. It served me very well in the past. Nero is particularly attractive because it is so easy to use. Just my kind of programme!!

Thanks again!

Thanks for the heads up Lee.

I stopped using Nero a few years ago when we got the first copy of Starburn given away by the giveaway project, which I've been using ever since; but it'll be nice to re visit the old program. I wonder how basic it is compard to the full version. :)
