I'd suggest asking the question in the CCleaner forums. If it is a bug, then likely they will fix it and release an update to CCleaner.

http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showforum=4

Isn't there a checkbox that you can unselect for AVG to ignore any cleaning possibilities related to AVG (at least until it is fixed?)

Update: I just took a peek at the embedded INI files that come with CCleaner (basically the default rules for cleaning)

[AVG AntiVirus 8.0]
ID=2141
LangSecRef=3024
Detect=HKLM\SOFTWARE\AVG\Avg8
Default=True
FileKey1=%allusersprofile%\Application Data\avg8\Log|*.log
FileKey2=%allusersprofile%\Application Data\avg8\scanlogs|*.log
FileKey3=%allusersprofile%\Application Data\avg8\Log|*.xml
FileKey4=%allusersprofile%\Application Data\avg8\update\backup|*.*
FileKey5=%allusersprofile%\Application Data\avg8\Emc\Log|*.log

For cleaning FileKey4 wipes all files in the specified folder ...avg\update\backup\

If wiping those files has a negative effect, perhaps they need to remove that line to exclude that backup folder for cleaning.

But in the meantime - you can actually change what constitutes "Cleaning" AVG - by providing some new settings for it.

That's explained in http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=15158

It's not too tricky, but if you really feel this is beyond you (or what you are willing to attempt) I'm sure someone... (looks around hopefully) will have some time to step you through this. Right now I've got lots of bodies to hide, and time is not on my side.

Note: It is still worth going to the CCleaner forums - just to give them a heads up on the effects you have seen by deleting that backup folder. There are probably lots of other AVG users who are frustrated at having to redownload av updates thanks to the definitions in ccleaner.

The embedded ini files for ccleaner are available for download (page forward for the current version) at http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=15307

Note - to download, you will need to create a forum account (as expected), and there is a weird bug in their forum software - seems most browsers have difficulty - except Opera (I just knew it would be good for something. LOL)

When I clean with CCleaner the update folder is emptied. I must update every time I clean my computer which means more MB to put it back. I don't understand if AVG must have a backup file, then why does CCleaner delete it?

It never did it before this update.

Yeah, did some checking, and the .avm files are incrumental update files. Instead of redownloading the entire update library every time, it, of course, just downloads the brand new definitions. I'd say bowlby's right on top of it. These cleaning programs target backup files, so you probably haven't lost any definitions. You could check the update folder itself and you should find the master copies of all the files that were deleted out of the backup folder. If you did lose the originals, you might even be able to download the current complete master library from AVG without having to go through a reinstall.

The incavi.avm file that CCleaner deletes is in the AVG update backup folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update\backup\incavi.avm
I think every update it copies the old one just in case the update fails. If the update is successful, I think it is no longer necessary.

Thanks for the reply Tailteann. I have now mentioned it over at Piriform and hopefully someone there knows what to do.

I have resorted to unchecking my AVG Files on CCleaner until its resolved.

Has anyone noticed that this version cleans out your AVG incavi.avm files. I am led to believe its the virus definition files. Over 38,000kb get cleaned each time I use it.

Should I be worried?
