I felt the same way when I was sort of forced to install it to play a game I'd bought via fileplanet. in fact there were two games, called <strong>Defense Grid: The Awakening</strong> and <strong>Galaxy Bowling</strong>. I hadn't a clue about Steam up till the moment I installed the first of those 2 games. I was rather annoyed at first and even wrote to Valve because I thought it an affront to have had to install the Steam client just so that i could play the games. </p> <p>Anyway, to cut a short story even shorter; within a few weeks I bought <strong>Half Lifes 2's Orange Box</strong> and found that it also used the steam client. It was at this point that I discovered the Steam shop, which is accessible via one of the tabs in the Steam browser. They had a weekend deal which I thought was an amazing bargain; all five games are some of the better indie games that have been released over the last few years. It comprised of five arcade games called <strong>Gravitron 2</strong>, <strong>Eet's</strong>, <strong>I-Fluid</strong>, <strong>Multiwinia</strong> and <strong>Tials 2: Second edition</strong>. The total cost of that package at the moment (<em>if you were to buy them seperately</em> is $40, though I got it via Steam for only $10. Every week they have at least one and often several recently released and some classics on offer for as much as 75% off the retail price. </p> <p>I bought <strong>Men of War</strong> last weekend for just over $10. The usual price is nearly $40. The previous week I bought all three of the <strong>Brothers in Arms</strong> trilogy (<em>A brilliant squad based game that requires tactics to be able to progress through the levels</em>)for less than $20. I paid around $145 for all three titles over the last three years (<em>I bought duplicates so that my son could play with me online</em>). Need I say more.</p> <p>I've come to really like Steam over the months, not only because of the amazing bargains (<em>I've bought nearly 130 games at a massive saving via Steam since I downloaded the client back in January of this year</em><em>), but also because all my games are automatically updated when patches and minor updates are released, plus it gives access to my friends {much like a gamespy or comrade client does}, while I'm online. Steam has the ability to add your own games that you may have that they sell on their program. I've added all my Half-Life games, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Lost Planet, Unreal Tournament 3, Prey, Painkiller, and MLB Front Office Manager this way. They only offer a few free games and that is only if you have an Nvidia or ATI graphics card.
