Yes Watcher you are correct. What I've been doing on any giveaway that I was even moderately interested in was to wait until the end of the day to see what people here in the forums were saying about it. In a few cases people reported problems or potential viruses so I never bothered downloading those things (and sometimes I just forgot to check back before the end of the day).

Speaking of which, what time zone does the GOTD operate on? When exactly is the end of that day? I am on the East Coast of the U.S.

wow, lotsa chat around the water cooler!

Robert, I'm not exactly back, I just check in once in a while when the meds aren't hammering me completely. Nothing happening yet on the neck front, and looking at the latest X-rays, I'm now unsure if there's all that much that can be done for it- looks like a high speed train wreck.

The reason I wanted to post that in the first place was for all the people complaining the converter wouldn't convert near the full range of formats, to get them to possibly install a proper codec pack so it would work- if that was their only complaint.

Personally, I wasn't impressed at all (duh) and still dunno why uninstalling broke other codecs. OTOH, I needed to update the K-lite pack anyway, then reinstall my capture apps for the ADS capture box (they break when the codec pack goes in, it confuses 'em) so I'd be up to date.

Format Factory 2.0 does all of what I want in transcoding unless I want to light up VirtualDub to hit a specific file size or something (I don't do a lot of transcoding, since I try to be color blind to formats most of the time- I don't *have* an ipod, iphone, portable vid player, xbox, PSP or generic versions thereof- so conversions are really rare.

once all the codecs are in place, .FLV is just another video, click to play. Or at least that's what it appears to do on my systems. The most common transcode is the few videos I take with my Canon A720IS to get them out of that idiotic motion JPEG format.

the free easy video splitter and easy video joiner is how I clip commercials out of my transfers off the DVR, so mostly I just wish I had more options for capture from my GO7007 based capture box. one option won't record over 2 gigs but does 640x480 for the correct aspect ratio, the other is fine up to the fat32 4 gig limit but insists on 720x480. grr...

LOL, folks! Terri thinks we're knowledgeable. Boy, have we got her fooled! (Hopefully, I got that gender right, Terri.)

Seriously, we didn't realize that you weren't aware that there's a large comments section with every giveaway. That's really your best resource, because some very sophisticated folks are over there who, unfortunately, haven't joined us over here. The quality varies widely, but there are some folks whose posts you'll want to look for: mike (not Mike or mikeR - two nice guys but not in the same knowledge bracket as mike), fubar, renegade, TK and some less techy guys who write detailed user reviews: Ashraf, MichaelMooreFan, PESFan, and Giovanni (those he's even more long winded than I am!) and others of both types whose names are, unfortunately, escaping me.

But the forums are certainly the best place for back and forth feedback. I saw your thread on yesterday's giveaway, but didn't post because a bunch of new comments had just passed moderation in the comments section and I figured you'd have everything you needed from those. By all means, post over here if you want to get more information on anything! We've got an awful lot of intelligent people over here, too - except when I'm posting :). We'll fix you right up! If you think you're unsure now, wait'll WE get done with you. =)

As far as Hidden Object games, GGOTD hasn't gotten hardly any in the year I've been coming here. I can't think of 5. But, thanks to our great game gurus - Whiterabbit, ReverseOrder, thewizzardofoz, gargoyle, and others too numerous to mention (actually to remember, 'cause I'm gettin' old.) - the forums has links to more than you can shake a stick at! Definitely check out those links from scuba.

Drop in any time for another heapin' helpin' of hospitality (not to mention hot air and confusion from yours truly).

Believe it or not I don't understand what most of the products are for. I'm not as computer literate as many of you and don't want to load something on my computer that isn't absolutely necessary especially after my virus nightmare two weeks ago. I did get my anti-virus program from a link in this forum and will probably download the RevoUnistaller once someone provides the link again. I downloaded RegCure based on a recommendation from the forums but discovered it would have cost me $30 to get it to work so I didn't buy it.

In terms of the games, I like mostly Hidden Object games and there haven't been any since I found this site. I think it's a great site, I just haven't found anything yet that interests me.

I love the forums because you guys are so helpful and knowledgable.

Terri, I can't believe it, you are here for over a month and haven't downloaded anything? -- LOL
Most people find this site in search of freeware.
Okay, the Giveaway of the Day / Game Giveaway of the Day project is the owner of this site, you can read more under About.
They are giving away one commercial software each day. You have to download, install and activate and/or register it in the actual 24 hours period.
These Giveaway of the Day Forums, of which you are a member, are run by the users under the roof of the GOTD project.
Everything you download via the forums (now mostly games) have nothing to do with GOTD/GGOTD, those are links, other users found in the WWW. They review and share them with the community.
True to the motto: Friends are helping friends.

I put in a comment on the current winx converter 6 times over the last 10 hours, and I still can't see it as I used to (with "your comment is awaiting moderation" at the bottom), and only this last time did wordpress give me the 'you've already said that' message. Still can't see it, so I'll dump a copy here and see if it shows later in the comments.

here it is:

this appears to be nothing more than a test/spinoff/marketing version of mastersoft's Alldj Video Converter, with the video preview pane removed and the links added. For a measly $10 off. check out the screenshot at alldj.

I was checking the DLL's it installs, and the version tab on pretty much all of them read out Real Networks, so system codecs have to handle the rest of the '134 formats'. If you look at the version tab of the .EXE's properties mastersoft and alldj.com comes up first.

@#25: :#3) Advertising: the price you pay for free software."

Yep, this is adware-class freeware, so why are they charging almost 30 clams for it? I sure wouldn't pay that for crippled adware!

@#26: .MOV *is* one of the input formats for Format Factory, in fact the release notes for 2.0 specify that the .MOV conversion was fixed. Just for fun, I just converted a .MOV from drop.io to AVI and it worked great.

I'm not even testing the speed on this giveaway, it's uninstalled for BS points alone.
