Good idea on clearing the cache, Watcher, that hadn't occurred to me. Update your flash, too, while you're at it.

I'd have to say some good advice from Bentley there Hot Rod. Does sound like a script problem. Have you cleared your cache? A lot of times a script will get garbled during download and then try to execute. Eventually, it will either work itself out or the computer will decide that it's failed and go on and do everything it can without that script. That usually accounts for the delay. The problem is: the bad script remains in your cache and tries to execute evertime you go to the page. I'd clear the cache, first. Or try to manually reload the page as soon as you go there. Like control-r does in IE (although may not respond right away since it might be partially locked up.)And/or set your browser to redownload the page everytime instead of automatically or once a week (those are the IE settings, the Firefox settings are escaping me at the moment. Had to uninstall FF and haven't got around to reinstalling.). You can then change that back as soon as the page loads properly, again. In fact, bad script copies, and occassionally other garbles, are the main reason that users are advised to clear the cache when a problem comes up.

Also, have you checked to see if you have the latest version of java? They just upgraded to 6.14 and if GOTD did also it may be having a bad reaction to whatever version you're running on. It a shame that we're all forced to keep up with java, but so many websites use it that you'll have problems if you don't get in line like a good little robot. :( . But, I'd clear my cache first.

http://www.java.com

Bentley's add-on idea is first rate, too. GOTD may have changed something in it's java and/or other coding that's no longer playing well with one of your add-ons. You might even try that after cleaning your cache and before checking your java version. And adblocker might work, too, since most of the time the offending script is part of an ad. Good luck and let us know.

Hi Hot Rod, that kind of thing can be hard to pin down. It could be a java or flash issue.. Does it do it in Internet Explorer too? Do you have a lot of add-ons for Firefox? I would try disabling all your extensions and plug-ins and then try the site; if it works fine, then start enabling your extensions one by one till the site freezes. If you get through all the extensions and it's fine then start enabling the plug-ins until it freezes. To disable either go to Tools and choose add-ons, then either the extensions tab or plug-ins tab. Do you have the AdBlockPlus add-on? It could be one of the ads on the main page and that would keep it from loading and keep the ad from locking you up.

I hope some of that is helpful! I'd say try AdBlockPlus first, if you don't have it, and see if that doesn't just disable whatever is coming up and freezing you out. If it doesn't work, keep it anyway as it's great to surf without ads! When you install it it'll ask which 'subscription' you want, it's just the list of ad servers it blocks. I usually use the Easy Privacy list.

Let us know how those options work! I think the most likely culprit is java or flash, but if you disable everything and it still hangs we'll have to dig deeper!

-Duane.
