Thanks, rezidue, for the samples. I'm going to run them by Avira ProActive beta.

I'm disappointed in Safe n Sec. For one thing, I thought I was getting DrWeb real time antivirus not just the on demand scanner. So, I uninstalled both Avira Personal ver 9 and ZoneAlarm Pro before I installed this. DrWeb ver 5 is excellent. I was a beta tester for them. It was long awaited and much superior to ver 4.

I put Safe nSec on a virtual machine running Vista Ultimate (no service packs...I know it wants SP2 but it installed ok after Vista popped up and said it was an old program and Vista automatically put it in compatibility mode. LOL I ran into a bad snag because it insists on doing a profile. That is NOT necessary because it has learning mode. Anyhow, the profile took 35 minutes to get to 89% and this was on avery small virtual hard drive with just a handful of programs installed. I would never run the profile scan on my host XP Pro computer...it would take forever.

Anyhow, I heard my hard drive. It is a very silent Seagate Sata\300 but it was very noisy. The profile had been using almost 100% of the CPU on both the guest virtual machine and the host computer through out the profiling. I started Speed Fan and my GPU fan was running at 2410RPM usually at 910RPM. The GPU temp was ok but my Seagate drive was burning up! I had to stop the scan at 89%. There is no way to get this program to run without doing the profile scan first so I'm going to have uninstall it.

It is intended for beginners only and probably quite good for them. I've run Process Guard for many years on XP and I need an HIPS for Vista as PG won't run on it but this is not the one.

LOL Watcher13 - my wife may not agree with that last sentence!

Being that this is a security issue I had to test it - I've had to fix quite a few friends PC's over the years because of lack of/bad software proclaiming to protect.

Nothings infallible, but I think this takes the cake as far as the "Not ready for prime time" category...

When you see people lose their data it can be quite heartbreaking at times.

Rez - I know. I just thought it was kind of funny. It's a great idea if you're not stupid and you know how to handle these things. If they're all different forms of viruses that vary greatly, that helps a lot too.

Thanks, Rez. Always helps when somebody tries to give us conscientious feedback. For my money, that's always appreciated. I figure you got those trojans from some testing site and that there safe with reasonable precautions. You've got Kaspersky running, obviously, so you know you're safe from 92%, anyway. :) You strike me as not the foolish type.

Wow, you just leave 500 Trojans sitting in a folder to test Virus Protection software. Not a bad idea, but could get outa hand. I myself use Windows Live One Care, which is amazing. It doesn't slow my computer at all and has saved me from soooooooooooooo many viruses.

But as far as free software goes, I love AVG. My old school use to use it and it worked pretty good. Stayed out of site and did its job.

Also, like you said, Safe N Sec is definately unreliable. Mainly because it's from a pretty unknown company and for Virus Protection, you're going to want a company that you know has a lot of feedback and Reviews. And, of course, the name

Being that my comments on the GiveawayOfTheDay are always late (other posts seem to get immediate approval), I'm posting this here...

Warning!

Okay, so I decided to test this. Downloaded and activated fine on my XP SP2 1.6 Intel Centrino Mobile w/512mb RAM.

Installation took about 1 minute but Safe
n
Sec 2009 + Antivirus Dr. WEB took an additional 40 minutes scanning my system and setting itself up.

I found and downloaded an encrypted rar (a compressed archive) that contained 500 trojans/malware/virus/adware, etc. and extracted the malware executables to a folder on my desktop.

I directed the Safe
n
Sec 2009 + Antivirus Dr. WEB to scan that folder and it only recognised 301 as dangerous! That’s right 199 just left sitting there like they were nothing! So basically we’re looking at a lousy 60% detection and removal.

So I then recovered my system and ran the same test using Kaspersky Internet Security 7

Out of the 500 baddies Kaspersky Internet Security 7 only missed 40. So that’s a detection rate of 92%

Hmm – looks like I’ll stick with Kaspersky and the odd online scan at one of the many now available.

I hope this gives anyone considering replacing their current security solution with this one second thoughts.

I can’t recommend this software.

Thanks GAOTD,
Regards,
Damian
