I loved the first book and its sequel Dune Messiah, but thought the later additions to the story were a bit lame. Herbert wasn't my favorite author of the time, but those books always enthralled me. (I much preferred an author called Michael Moorcock and his eternal champion series, plus he was linked to one of my favorite British cult space rock bands called Hawkwind) I even bumped into the guy accidentally while attending a Hawkwind concert in the 1970's.</p> <p>I'm going to check to see if the later version of Dune - Dune 2000 is also free (still got a CD copy of that also). Basically it’s a life simulation game. It’s recommended that you use DOSBox for it to run; however I got it to work on my computer without the need for DOSBox; (XP Pro with Service pack 3). Once unpacked, click on the file called SCIV256 - you’ll need to create a folder for the unzipped files and then create a shortcut from the file I mention above. This can then be renamed to <strong>Jones in the Fast Lane</strong>. If you can’t get it to run without DOSBox I do think it’s well worth the initial hassle of setting up DOSBox (<em>if you haven't already</em>) to play this game. See wizzards post on <em>DOSBox made simple</em> in the forum stickies, you can use a free copy of Norton Commander with DOSBox to make accessing your DOS games really easy.</p> <p>The game is keyboard only with the cursor keys and enter being the main key bindings you need to know. The game play is straightforward and very absorbing once you settle into the game. Graphics are old school, but okay. Game play easily makes up for the poor, but colorful graphics. The sound was annoying though.</p> <blockquote><p> Jones in the Fast Lane is a simulation for real life. We start as an un-employed un-educated person with almost no money. Your goal, much like in real life, is to earn as much money as possible. It is not that easy as it sounds. I think I still have the game stored somewhere because I was loath to part with it. Anyway, the download works well. It plays on my XP with SP3 without using DOSBox, but if you have problems running it I’d play it via DOSBox. Unlike the game above, you have mouse control on this game, so gameplay is amde a little easier.</p> <blockquote><p> Dune 2 started an era. An era which you controlled your forces, manipulated your opponent, and conquered your enemy's home-base. Successful games such as 'Command &#38; Conquer' trilogy, 'Warcraft' trilogy, Starcraft, 'Age of Empires' and much more were pretty much an enhancement of this game. The storyline is not related to the game, except the names of 2 houses. The planet Arrakis, known by it's rich spice resource, a resource which is the key to eternity and space travel, will be handled to the house which controls Arrakis. 'Controls' is a politically correct word for 'killed the other houses'. The battle for Arrakis now begins between 3 houses. Each house has it's mentat, which will guide you through the game, unique color, and unique machinery.
