That's what we're saying, torymon. 99.9% chance it's the same developer. But it's not really a scam unless you can still order from the old website. Though, it's still is a little deceptive. LIke you, I don't fault GOTD. Though, I'm afraid some folks have a slightly naive view of this project. GOTD is only going to turn down money if it's harmful code, or get's so bad a reaction, probably would have to be 95% against or worse, that there's no point in even GIVING it away.

The truth is, these people are getting theirs. Because of alert folks like we have here, they're getting a negative backlash. If they were clear about their relationship with Audio Editor Deluxe, whatever it may be, they'd have probably gotten a positive response. I'm not going to point fingers, though, without knowing exactly what the real story is.

Besides, we're getting away from the purpose of the thread. Thanks again Damian for pointing out that, if you have both softwares, and try to uninstall one, you could run in to problems if you don't use the built in uninstaller. The fact that their uninstaller works, should be the final proof it's the same developer. Only they would know not to remove those things, especially since they don't give you a "shared" warning.

Greetings all!
It is suspicious activity regarding the "re-branding" issue!
What gives... it is interesting that the coding is identical...
Shouldn't there be a copyright issue? Should be... unless it's the same developer!
Or does the developer have some kind of issues to hide from...
Really makes one pause...
I don't fault GAOTD at all, I don't believe there's a conspiracy but
there appears to be some shady vendors who "must sell" software...
at any cost, apparently.
Even if the software in question is the absolute best in it's niche,
bad reputation, poor or no customer service, disappearing vendors...
yeh right... makes me want to plop down my hard earned cash!
Caveat Emptor!

Yeah, thename, there could be a lot of different reasons. Illegal? No. Ethical? That's the hard part. I just went back and checked and I can't get through to the Audio Editor Deluxe site, so maybe they took it down. I checked out the "about us" page on both sites, and they have different company histories. Maybe the Audio Editor Deluxe developer joined with somebody else, or maybe got caught copying from these folks. Their company is supposed to be older. Without trying to order from the old site, which may have been taken down, there's no way to tell for sure. It does happen, though. We had a developer last year who offered more than one software on GOTD and had 4 different websites offering various versions and perumutations of his/her software. They linked to each other as, something like, "trusted partners", though all had the same whois. I said at the time: definitely deceptive.

I'm assuming you noticed, Damian, that Audio Editor Deluxe got a 2/3rds approval rating last time, and this version is under 1/2. If they're acting as you said, you're right, it seems to be a big time backfire. They may have understimated the intelligence of the people we have here, such as you folks.

Hi thenameipicked and watcher13.

Or the developer might be using GAOTD, as the testing ground it is, to see which naming of their software gets a better response, if so, having it so close to the last one was probably not the best idea, as it's mainly created confusion. Just another guess...

So they are by the same author? I didn't do that background work....my only question is why? And isn't this illegal...? I decompressed both of the programs into code...and they are identical, with some changes in names (to represent their company).

I did the Whois and get the same street address. Sorry, but I think you're wrong about that thename. Not that I'm saying it because he thanked me, :), but Damian's one of the sharper old pros here. I'd say that he and the others that have posted in the comments section are right. 99% chance that these are the identical programs. Slight differences, if any, may be just version changes.

Right you are about the cars. They are called "twins". All the American auto manufacturers did it and still do. I owned a set of twins, back in the day. First, a Buick Apollo, then a Chevy Nova. Same car, different nameplate. Some people would say that was deceptive in cars, but most would agree it's deceptive in software. Unless they changed their name and aren't accepting orders on the old site, but have neglected to take it down.

Not sure if it's the same authors/company as I have not researched whois, etc. but if it is I suppose it could be put in the context of something like cars sold by GM - Chevrolet Camaro or Pontiac Firebird - take your pick - same cars with a different badge (basically - at least back in the day).

I'm fairly sure these programs don't use the same dlls and such...but I haven't tried uninstalling yet. I lost the activation code, and I already had other audio editors, so I just left it on there. Now that I have this editor, the other still is exactly the same. I think what happened, is because of the similarity of the code, it found both of the program's registration details, and deleted them. However, everybody probably should use one and not the other. I have found recently that MP3 editors now are just redistributed by different authors, and no difference in performance, and slight differences in visuals. To compare today's program to Audio Editor Deluxe, let me start off by saying that both have the exact same icon. Look at these screenshots:
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4035/mp32m.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5130/mp31k.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6471/mp3e.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/2803/audio2h.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5945/audio1z.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/9750/audioh.jpg
Each of them are exactly the same as the one 3 below it, except for the title, and the vista taskbar :P
2 different programs, given away here:
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/483/gold2q.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6789/gold1n.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8969/goldtya.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4486/advanced2.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1293/advanced1.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5140/advancedu.jpg
Again, these screenshots are almost exactly the same, with the exception that the advanced has a better interface, but the buttons you push are the same.
As additional proof, I started having trouble with both of them at the same time, with both of them producing the same error. (The first two don't)
My question is (so I don't get my comment removed because I swayed from the topic): Why is giveaway of the day giving us these identical programs? Or even worse, why are the authors trying to make money on the same program?

Heads up on potential problem

Yes, this is the same as Audio Editor Deluxe offered on April 18, 2009

If you install both programmes and then uninstall one of them you might just find that the one left on your system no longer works, due to the NCT DLL’s and registry entries being removed by the others uninstallation.

It will depend on whether you just use the regular uninstall exe or an uninstall manager like Total Uninstall.

On my Win XP SP2, the regular uninstall had no adverse affect but when I used Total uninstall to remove one, it affected the other as it removed the dll’s and registry entries that are shared by the two (one?) programmes.

So choose one and stick with it!

As always thanks to the GAOTD team,
Regards,

Damian J Spooner

And thank you watcher13 for your thanks about a week or so ago on another post...
