Watcher, not to pin any roses on myself, but I am a pretty laid back type of person. It takes quite a bit for me to 'pull the plug' on a conversation, but if I must I will. If I am trying to enforce group/forum rules, and people are being hard headed and just won't listen then I tell them I am taking appropriate action, which in the case of this forum would be to close the thread. Moderators have to enforce the GOTD rules. They are there for a reason. Now having said that, I do think it's a good thing to explain to people the purpose of any taken action. Again, though, if someone is being absolutely hard headed and won't listen, then the thread may have to be closed. If push comes to shove, the member could be banned, if called for. I think it would have to be a pretty bad scenario for that to happen though.

Yeah, Delenn, I think there would have been less chance me leaving that somewhat snarky post if the moderator (whoever) had say why that thread was closed. Even, "I think we've thoroughly discussed this subject and should probably move on." But I put it the way I did because I'm starting to see some level of frustration in some of the moderators. I don't blame them, but it might be better if we all - myself included - took an deep breath and counted to 10 first.

Paul/Watcher, I am a *little* hard headed myself, at times...<Sue says, tongue planted firmly in cheek>.

BK, for some reason I have never gotten the hang of html coding. It has been explained over and over, and for some reason I just can't get the hang of it, although I *have* tried...(chuckle).

W'Rabbit, maybe I should go ahead and repost it, since you and others had already seen it...lol.

"communication is big key"

Delenn, I agree with that paragraph and the following one. I really believe in explaining the whys and wherefores when 'disciplining' folks on the forums. Oh, and that Dragon you mentioned? We tried that a long time ago and found it to be more trouble than it was worth. I think I ended up giving it away.

Sue - who thanks to Mavis Beacon types pretty decently as it is, so really doesn't miss the Dragon...hee hee

LOL I just Modded Myself :)

I had it happen it me the other day. No big deal. In fact, I expected it.

I think it was (***waves**** @)"Sunfish" had a problem; She posted her question. Then she figured out how to fix it and edited her post to say as much.(Not to mention it was her first post..which she mentioned also.)I said something to the effect..that most ppl don't come back and let anyone know and it was her second post, BTW. It was in the Tech forum and we were carrying on a conversation until I had to leave. The next day it was gone; but like I said..I wasn't surprised. Now I am sure, unless the mod PM'ed her, Sunfish has no idea why the post was removed. And she is new..so.... will she post again?

As most of you know, I ran an IRC chat channel for over 10 yrs and communication is big key to keep it going. You need to let the people know why so they don't do it again or quit posting all together. It is one of the biggest gripes about GOTD. No Communication. So maybe the mods in the forum could help that matter a bit.

My suggestion is..If a post is removed or moved, message the poster the reason why. I am not talking about spamming and the like(some are obvious). Just a small note would be nice. It might bring some peace and understanding. In another forum I posted to another poster about something they didn't understand. My post was "Don't feel like the Lone Ranger" or something along that line. She requested to have her post removed so they removed mine also because it didn't make any sense to be left there. I got a small note saying why my post was removed.

(I am getting to really like this Dragon. Still do some of the typing but this is something I could really get used to.)

I think us mods just try to do our job and don't realize if we do anything "wrong". We try our best to keep these forums clean of spam and unneeded material. I hope if anyone has a complaint we me they can pm me so I can do my best to improve my moderating abilities. Thanks everyone :)

watcher13....some folks keep a document (on the desktop or somewhere easy to get to) with the codes/tags that are usable in the forums. Then you just copy the set of tags you want to use and paste it into your post then type whatever you want between the tags. Saves time and it's easier than remembering the tags.

Just a suggestion.

Thanks a lot, WR! I was probably just being lazy. Should have looked that up for myself, though I wasn't sure whether the standard methods - of which, I've almost never utilized - would work on these posts, so your confirmation is really useful. You must admit, caps are easy. Still that doesn't look too tough. I might try it.

Oh, that's what that stuff under the box meant! Just call me newbie!

Hi Watcher, what about using bold and italics instead of caps?

There's a post somewhere that tells you what coding to use. It's also below the reply box.

For bold use the word strong with forward and backwards arrows (< & >) before the word or sentence you wish to place in bold and end with the same but add a / before the strong.

i.e. (without the spaces)

< strong >

&

< / strong >

For italics use em instead of strong and if you want to indent or use a quote use ul or Blockquote respectively.

Regards

WR

p.s.
to sue, I saw the deleted post after it had been deleted. I was curious when I saw Thenamepicked reply when he mentioned your online name , so checked the number of posts and saw the +1 which indicates one has been deleted. :) I was being nosey, lol

Yeah, sorry, name, but I gotta go with the other folks. The way the GOTD agreement basically works is, if something goes wrong with your computer, you lose the software. Out of respect to the project that's one of the forums rules. If you haven't seen it, there's a sticky topic on the rules, and it's rule #7. Out of respect to GOTD, we're not in the habit of telling people how to get around the agreement. Sometimes moderators let that go, but this time, they were just doing their job. Nothing personal. And to be honest, I'm not saying some of us haven't bent the rules on this issue, occassionally. (Blushes)

Also, I sometimes use caps to emphasize a word or phrase in my posts. I can see where that might be misunderstood for yelling. Frankly, I'm going to keep doing that, unless someone can suggest a better option. I'll try to adjust, but I'm thinking I might be being misunderstood.

Paul, the Watcher - who sympathizes with Sue, and, good or bad reply, hope she understands he's sometimes hard headed. :)

Oh....woops. Well, I can say (I won't say which softwares...as that probably is against the rules) that I have done this with other software, because the codes worked on multiple computers..although it was because of my registry cleaner :(

Hi thename... Actually, I deleted my post after seeing WR's reply. When I typed up mine, there was only Watcher's post there, but after posting mine, I saw a couple of others had posted making mind seem to me a bit redundant/unnecessary. I did save my reply if anyone else wants to read it - I didn't think anyone would have seen mine, as I deleted it within seconds of posting it...lol.

I did read your question on the other thread. I feel that sometimes a bit of educating, and not just reprimanding and deleting, is in order. When someone asks about, say, reregistering software when trying to reinstall after a reformat they really just need to understand that you can't just reregister something from GOTD, as the software registration only works for that one day. Now, if you buy the software, then you can redownload/reregister all you want to per the distributor's rules - some may only allow you to do that a certain number of times and that's it. HTH. :D

It took me a year to actually join the forums, lol. I used to only post comments about the games and occasionally the software, but never bothered with the forums until I decided to post my game reviews here.

We have a topic on the Starburn giveaway that someone else turned toward the subject of the toolbar. I posted a response and got an intelligent response from the Wizzard of Oz that I didn't agree with. I tried to post another response but a moderator had closed it, without explanation. That in itself isn't that important. But, bluntly, I'm starting to notice an attitude of frustration with debate from a moderator or two (I really haven't narrowed it down). I agree it can get out of hand, and I can be as guilty as anyone. This seems to stem from an understandable desire to not have the forum cluttered up with questions that are against the rules. That seems to me a good trend. But, I believe getting over sensitive about debate is a bad trend. If moderating is frustrating you that much, take a break and let someone else do it for awhile.

I'm really not trying to elicit a justification or response from that moderator. I'd have no way of knowing who it is and really don't care. If you feel you must justify closing that topic, then I'm sure you will. It doesn't matter to me. My complaint isn't about that, it's general.

I realize the moderators will never get enough credit for what they do and I sympathize. But, at least post a notice saying, "I'll only tolerate debate here until it gets under my skin, then you'll be cut off." It's good to try and help the forums keep a consistent direction, but we all - me, especially - have to be careful about trying too hard to impose are own personal vision on the forums.

On the other hand, I wonder how many people will actually see THIS post?
