Yes, wizz, it works. I ended up telling Game Booster to shut everything down but my firewall. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I had one of my migraines and the weather here is really messing with my arthritis in my neck and fingers. So it's been a triple whammy. Not too many places I don't hurt.

midori, funny you should mention that. Back in the 70's I sent hours playing a real pinball machine in the local bar. And it was called "Pinball Wizard". Had a pic of Ann Margaret and Roger Daltrey on it. IIRC it even had a small pic of Tina Turner as "The Acid Queen". AND it had sounds!!!!

Yes you do midori, if you check out the sticky I made about setting up dosbox, I've already updated it to figure out how to do so. It's gotten just a little trickier with this edition.

Hey there, delenn... you could always make like Tommy (in Pinball Wizard) and still play a mean pinball. "He ain't got no distractions; don't hear no buzzers and bells." And here we go with the name wizzard again! Great name for a cat. I'll never forget my Natty, and boy was he a spiffy dresser. All decked out in his tux... stayed with me for 18 years.
Question for OUR wizzard: (and I hope I'm not re-asking a question) With the new DosBox, do you have to reset it up to use Norton Commander? Aw, it only makes sense that you do... so why did I ask? Because I like to! *&:-D

Hey, if I don't ask the question, then I don't learn. Besides how many lurkers(from DownUnder-a B5 term), are having the same problem and just staring into space. And you need sound to play pinball. It is just in space that no one hears you if you scream. Help me out here, SpaceLox.
Hey DOSBox is really cool and you can play some really old games.

Wizzard, I will try this tonight and let you know how it works out. When I play my games, I use that Game Booster and it shuts down all my running processes that I don't need..etc. I have to fix dinner now so I can't play with it.

If you want dosbox to always run in full screen, just open up your dosbox.conf file and one of the first options says fullscreen = true/false. True means it will always run fullscreen, or false it doesn't. When you say jerky I'm thinking choppy...perhaps you should fiddle with these to see if it helps:

CTRL+F7 = Decreases frameskip
CTRL+F8 = Increases Frameskip
CTRL+F11 = Slows down the game
CTRL+F12 = Speeds up the game

Glad I could help you resolve the sound issue and hopefully this will help your further endeavors =)

Thanks again, wizzard(that was my cat's name of 14 years..God bless his soul.) It worked. You are the man!!!

NOW.....the video is jerky and the full screen won't stay open. Can I use commands for DOSBox or do I have to do something for EACH game? I have all the commands for DOSBox..just not sure which ones I need to use. I am learning..so this is good. I haven't used DOS in probably over 15 years or more.

The Neptune board is so cool. Can't wait to start playing it. The others are too.

First off, Delenn you are very welcome. Now to your question. When you open dosbox and navigate to the Pinball Dreams 2 folder, one of the files is called setsound.exe Once you select this a box will pop up and I picked Sound Blaster 16, kept what they suggested, and then I did maximum quality. This worked great for me so I hope it helps you. =)

I don't think leaving the password blank will have anything to do with the lack of sound. I think some games just don't work well with DOSBox. Sound seems to have been a problem with lots of games. I've not installed the latest version yet, but will do when I return home tomorrow and will check out Pinball Dreams 2 myself.

I've only just picked up on this thread since posting over a week ago. I even missed reading the hardships that pavid and wizzard have or are facing. Sorry about that guys.

I was lucky with my higher education. I actually dropped out of college initially because everyone was doing it. (1972), but always regretted it. I joined the armed forces with little more than school certificates under my belt, but managed to get a decent tech job after a few IQ tests; (telecommunications with the Royal signals). When I left the Army I worked for four years electro-mechanical engineering industry and then when the mini depression of the early 80's started to hit industry iin the UK I started my re education, studying with the newly formed open university. It was hard holding down a full time job, having a young family and studying for six (or more) hours every day, so when I was 26 I decided to enrol full time at university; as back then in the early 80's, university places were well funded. I was lucky because my open university mentor was a lecturer at the university I'd applied to, and he gave me a very good reference and was accepted without the usual requirements.

I remember actually being better off with my grants than with the money I'd earned while working full time; something that is no longer possible because funding for university places has been drastically altered to mirror that of the US system; though not exactly. (all my tuition fees were paid and I got grants for being married, having to live away from home, book grants, travelling expenses and more). I ended up staying at university for nearly a decade as I enjoyed the learning environment so much. I took a four year undergraduate degree with honors, then stayed on to work as a researcher while I did post graduate studies. I've always recommended to people that they do education as it can be the most rewarding of experiences. If I can wean myself off the opoids and get back my memory, I may even return to do a doctrate as I'd intended to do 20 years ago (unfortunately I got involved with a motorcycle group and became a bit of a tearaway for a while). The doctrate will have to be something environmental as that's where my B.Sc and M.Sc specialisms lie.

With respect to being mentioned in the Wiki; it seems unfair that wizzard and reverseOrder weren't mentioned having been part of the project for a large proportion of it's life. Though I am touched by someone putting my name there. :) It can always be added to though, as it is a wiki.

:)

Edit,

Someone has already edited the wiki and included wizzard and rO.

I know; I know, OLD thread. But I need help. Besides it's kinda kewl to revive this thread since it's the thread where Wabbit gets his mention in the Wikipedia. Congrats, you wrascally furball! I got his autograph before he was famous.

Now to my help please.

I have been playing with my updated DOSBox(Thanks for the instructions wizzard. Works great.) the Psycho Pinball and Pinball Dreams. Today I finally got around to trying to play Pinball Dreams 2. Man, these boards are so pretty. Wish I had started earlier but I got NO sound. Now what is a Pinball game with no sound? I went searching around and couldn't find anything about it. Now when I set it up, it did ask for a password(found on the 3rd page of the user manual, Line 2, Word 4). But since nothing was said about it, I just left it blank and clicked on enter. Is this why I have no sound???

Please help me because the graphics on these boards are awesome and I really want to play with sound.

All my other games work. Never had this problem before. Any suggestions?

Thanks midori and pavid for your encouragements. I think it was just being out all weekend and working all week and finishing up college...just got me tired I think. Now today is the city wide garage sales so I'll be out shopping all this morning after working all night. After shopping, I gotta take my fiance to work and then start the server up for today's Half-Life 2 deathmatch game. But from that point on, I'm just relaxing all weekend and I have a short work week too.

Pavid that is horrible. I'm not sure I could handle doing that. My father went to college full time and held a 3rd shift job through the week and another 2nd shift job on the weekends with me being a baby so I know that I don't have quite as hard as others, but that doesn't mean I'm not as tired. I admire the way he (and you for that matter) held your strength through those trying times and came out on top. I've got about another year of college if I can go for more than 2 classes at a time (3rd shift plus low income but not low enough to get financial aid) and maybe catch some winter classes. I've been doing college now for about 5 years (I took college classes during my senior year of college...not AP that would transfer, actual college courses,) and I am ready to get it over with lol. I slipped a little this semester and got my first non-A since that very first year, but Business Law 2 was too boring and repetitive for me. Anyway, I'm done ranting and raving lol. Thanks for your concern and I intend to get as much rest as possible. =D

Glad you liked the pinballs. I'm partial to some as well.

There arn't many modern pinballs around o my knowlwg=dge, but you can get some excellent ones via Good Old games for around $5. Not a bad price considering the amount of gameplay you can derive from them.

I'm looking for a particular pinball that was released about 10 years ago. Unfortunately I can't remember the name at the moment. It was a ghost/spooky house style pinball, with mini games and several different boards that were connected together. I think it was associated with Real Arcades thrillride series, but not 100% sure.

There's quite a few free ones available from Caiman, so if you can't wait for the next round of pinballs, check 'em out. :) you'll also find several in the games synopsis.

Thanks Wabbit, the pinballs are greatly appreciated.

Wizz, I echo midori's sentiment. The most vivid memory of my university years is near the end of 3rd year. I was working my butt off taking classes and studying weekdays then hopping a train home right after last class on Friday. I'd try to read a bit on the 1 hour train ride. My parents would pick me up at the station with a change of clothes which I would put on in the car on my way to start work 45 minutes after the train arrived. After working two 12-hour shifts I would take a train back to school to start the whole process once again.

Three years of this (needed the money and parents couldn't afford to help) caused me to become worn out and depressed to the point that I really wanted to drop out of school. Fortunately I talked it over with Mom who simply told me that I had come this far and there was only 1 more year to go. She said "The decision is your's but consider the consequences in the harsh light of reality". That was good advice. I thought it over and didn't like what I saw so I stayed in school but stopped working so much.

The point of my story is that as midori says trying to eat everything will make you sick. Slow down a bit and consider what life would be like for you if you don't finish school.

Take care wizz!!

Hey, wizz... take care, buddy, and give yourself some TLC. When there's too much on your plate, scrape some of it off. If you eat the whole thing, you'll only get sick. Don't know how you do it with classes plus a job... I've watched my daughter reach the burn-out stage and you've just gotta let things drop for a bit. Hugs to you. *&;-)

Thanks for picking up the slack for me rabbit I'm sorry, I've been out of it this week and I'm not sure why. I think next week I'm just gonna take it easy and relax as much as possible.

Thank you, Wabbit. Those pinball games look right up my alley. :)

Hope you and your family have a great safe trip. Relax and enjoy yourself. I was born in Tampa, Florida. Busch Gardens, back when I was a kid, was free and only had a bird and elephant show. The tour of brewery was 50 cents. My how things have changed. I think you have to mortgage your house now. Just kidding..... but I know it isn't cheap.

And don't you worry your bunny tail off about us. I am sure wizzard, ro, and the others will keep us amused with more of their findings of game treasures.

I have a folder full of games thanks to all of you guys. I might not say it a lot but thanks for all your hard work and research. There is no way I would have known where or how to look for the games you find that are safe and fun to play. Key word being "safe".

Thanks, wrabbit... these all look like great fun to try. And I'm in the mood for some pinball! And may I remind you to HAVE A BLAST on your trip, without stretching your limits. You'll have a grand time, even if you take it easy.

3D World Boxing: (<1Mb)

This game was released in 1992, with graphics that could have been from five years later. Nicely rendered for its time. Well worth a checkout if you like beat ‘em up games.

The first thing which struck me about this game was that you can begin playing very quickly; there are not that many tiresome menus. You choose either a one-off match, where you just select two boxers, or a complete championship. Go one-off and set the number of rounds and the time of each one.
Then, to start off, an easy match between the first-ranked boxer vs. the twenty-first is a good way to go. You can play around a little with the poor chump before placing him firmly on the canvas. Nice clean fun, but it doesn't offer anything special.
The Championship is the far more interesting type of game; this is where you train a boxer and take him up the rankings. You start out by meeting a few losers, so you get the hang of the game, but the skill of your opponents rapidly increases. So you need to prepare in the best way: by looking at the other boxer's weaknesses and distributing your skill points accordingly. If he has a weak defense, try hitting that chin a few times with full power, and he'll soon be seeing stars. A high endurance, on the other hand, means you've got a long, gruesome fight on your hands.
Graphically this game holds its own, as you can see. Sports games in general don't really need high class graphics, but this game actually looks ok. The music, though, (and I'm going out on a limb by calling it that) is not anything you'd put in your stereo on a Friday night...
So far so good, but: The controls suck! Yes, I'm sorry, but that's the way it is... It's hard to make your boxer understand which punch you want him to throw and when. Many times you'll be caught cursing the guy for just jumping around without doing much of anything. This is largely due to the fact that you can't set up the keys to control him, so you're left to the cursor keys and Enter...
But with a lot of training (and maybe cursing) you might actually still like this game. And the gaming world is awfully dry of decent boxing games, so give it a try!

Seven Days A Skeptic:

I was going to post this one at the same time I posted 5 days a stranger, but I’d posted several point and click adventures so left it for a rainy day. I presume Wizzard has assignments to complete. I really don’t know how he manages to post games on a regular basis, study and set up servers at the weekend. All I can say is you’re marvelous. I thought I’d post the following games in your absence. I’m off to the USA in a little over 6 hours time, so this will probably be my last post for a few weeks (well to post games at least)

7 Days a Skeptic is the very good 2004 sequel to 5 Days a Stranger. Like its predecessor, this is one of my favorite AGS and adventure games. Definitely worth a try.
Many centuries have passed since the DeFoe Manor incident. It is now no more than folklore and forgotten stories. The human race is going "where no man has gone before", and the invention of warp technology is fast-pacing the spaceship program. Due to vehicle shortages, the Earth Federation instigates a new program that upgrades old and retired spacecraft. The Mephistopheles is the first to undergo this program. Crewed by a new complement of six crewmen, the Mephistopheles is assigned to map out the Caracus galaxy. A few days into the voyage, the crew sight a metal locker with the name DeFoe on it. They open it to find nothing in it - or so they think...
Note: This game is gorier than 5 Days a Stranger, so I would not recommend this game to anyone who had a problem with the violence in its predecessor.

If you get stuck there’s a walkthrough available from the download page.

Pinball Dreams and Pinball Dreams 2: (2.33Mb)

Digital Illusions' pinball series in the early ninetees were a real hit! They featured beautiful graphics, dynamic and realistic gameplay, all kinds of tables and much more. Pinball freak or not, once you run this game you will be glued to the screen for hours :) You can even tilt the table. There are many "missions" hidden within each table, and new ones open up as you reach higher scores. I played this game oftenly, and I haven't unlocked all the missions, so believe me when I say that there is a lot of potential there :)
Of course, I can't neglect the fact that the music and sound effects are simply fabulous! All in all, a mark of 5 for phenomenal graphics (bear in mind that this is 1992.), wonderful SoundBlaster sound effects and music, and generally for being probably one of the best pinball series ever to be published on PC!

Pinball Dreams 2 is, obviously, the sequel of much praised Pinball Dreams. The sequel brings us 4 new tables with lots of gameplay on each one of them! The tables are named as follows: Neptune, Safari, Revenge of the Robot Warriors and Stallturn. You can see a screenshot of a portion of each table to the right.
Every table offers a unique theme and experience. If you are a pinball fan, you will not get bored of it quickly. When comparing with its prequel, the graphics have been improved as well as the sound. The tables are truly gigantic and there is a lot to discover on every one. A mark of 4 then for excellent gameplay, sound and graphics, but nothing new and spectacular! If you like pinball games and haven't played this one, it's 4 tables are guaranteed to provide you with hours of fun!
