Okay, the server has been set to run from this coming Saturday 16th May 8pm GMT. I've set it to random maps with a change every 40 minutes. there's a frag limit set to 50 and I'll keep the server open until the following morning; or maybe until late Sunday evening. Your right it was really easy to set up.

The event is called:

Giveaway Social Club - Half Life 2 Deathmatch or

The server is called:

Whiterabbit's Giveaway server (I think I may have set two, lol)

the server address:

127.0.0.1:27015

and the password:

Cholon

I hope we see lots of community members there.

Please do comment to let me know how many are likely to be joining the server. I won't be able to join until after 9.30pm, but should then be in until my hands get too painful. I played two sessions last weekend from 10pm to 11.30 and then again around 4am for another hour. To anyone that hasn't played yet, or more importantly never payed online. It really is great fun. I personally avoided going online after a few bad experiences playing on public servers. This server will be password protected to keep out those that cheat or mess around.

I hope to see you all on Saturday or possibly Sunday if I keep the server open. I'm likely to be playing between 5 to 7pm and 10 to 12pm on Sunday. (all GMT) :)

I'll post this over in the appropriate thread. I only realized I'd posted it in the wrong thread after I'd posted it, lol

yep on the right side of the page you'll see an option to schedule an event. Easy as can be. To get your IP, I started the server I created and on the server source it lists your IP so I just copied and pasted. Also I think to let everyone know the password, we should just settle on 1 password for all servers. Until we start getting hijacked by people who figure out our password, we shouldn't have a problem with this. My initial hopes were for this group to consist of members of GOTD. I would also like the general public (those who don't contribute to the forums but are here) to join us. I want the group to reflect the general public. Thus, if the general public wants to join in with our games, I want them to join the group. The best way I can think to do this is to keep the password secret amongst ourselves and send the new members the password. Just a thought.

Hi WR: In Vista try: control panel; all programs; accessories and then command prompt. I think that is what you are looking for. Hope this helps, and have a great vacation. I know it is much deserved.

run is in your start menu rabbit. If you don't see it in the new style menu, just right click on the start button and go to properties. Then check classic start menu. Or, you could just search for it....in your start menu is a search bar that searches all your files on your system so just type in dxdiag.

Rabbit, once you get it sorted out that you are doing the server this weekend, please post on the steam group page that we have an event coming up. You will need your ip address to connect the server to the event. If it looks like you can't do it for bandwidth problems I can set the server up to run all day on my end, but I probably won't be able to play because it's my fiance's birthday on saturday and I'll be out of town all day sunday. Let me know =) Also, it should be available to send the password for the game through steam to all the members. I'll have to check that out. Something like a mass message or something.

Its an emachine. A budget model, but ideal for what I want it for. It's got a single core 2.2GHz cpu, 2Gb of RAM and a ATI 256Mb RAM graphics card. (not sure of the model yet - will have to check dxdiag) The HDD is small at 140Gb (I'm sure it had said 180Gb on the sales card for some reason, but it ain't)I'll probably fill it up very soon, lol. I have already selected about 20 DVD based games to install as well as at leasr 20Gb of Mods for one of the games called Battlefield 2. Each of those games are at least 4Gb to 7Gb, so by the time I've installed them, there will be little left to install all the arcade games I want. lol

WR

p.s.

The screen is a 15" wide screen, so isn't as big as a normal 15" monitor.

p.p.s.

Apart from a brief period when I first bought a copy of Vista Home Premium, I've not used Vista and am at a loss to find the run command. does anyone know how I can open DXDiag in Vista????? This laptop has the home basic version.

Only the Wabbit could call a 15" laptop "small" . Us mere mortals think small means something like a 9" netbook but that won't let you play games online so what did you buy?
From what I know about hotel internet you'll probably get just about enough bandwidth to send/receive Email so you'll have to find a hardwired connection to get online.
Anyway have a good holiday and remember what the dormouse said....

lol

Thanks for Messaging the password for the server, unfortunately I couldn't even connect. Maybe there was too much ping?

I've not been on Steam at all today as I've just bought a small laptop for the vacation (15" screen). The hotel has free internet access provided you have your own laptop, so I decided to take the plunge. I've been installing games all day (well since I got back from Hydrotherapy) so haven't been on steam nor these forums all day, which is unusual. I'll have to install the steam client onto the laptop as well. most of the games (apart from the latest ones such as Left 4 Dead) should work on the laptop. Thankfully HL2 will easily play on it, so I won't be missing the Sataurday evening matches afterall (unless the family object to me playing in the same room as them. (my son will be facinated); however, I suppose it will depend upon the bandwidth of the connection at the hotel. (I wonder if they will have a two tier system; where to get a better bandwidth you have to pay by the hour?)

Thanks for the warning, wrabbit... I think I'm used to keeping an eagle-eye out for those pre-checked boxes, but newcomers need to pay attention to any extras they may be downloading. Great tip.

Do watch out with some of the newer games at Gametop because they attempt to install tool bars and also fully hijack your homepage; however, that said, both inconveniences are reversible. If you do forget to uncheck the tick boxes during the games installation and find your internet browser opening at Gametop, and you're not sure how to change it back; go to your I.E. icon and right click and select internet properties. Where it says home page, click on the default button. this will at least bring you back to a decent search engine. You can then type in whatever search engine you usually use and set that as your home page. The process is slightly different for Firefox. I think you go to Tools and select internet properties, but it's been a long time since I messed with firefox, so can't be sure.

Regards

Many added comments wanting to bring back certain games to the announcement left by GGOTD saying that they were taking a May vacation and would be gone for what sounded to me to be quite a while.

Many of the games being requested in the comments are available now from a single spot. As GOTD says "you can't beat the price". Games downloaded from "Gametop" are free. The paragraphs below give a little more information on the subjects that I mentioned.

Yesterday I saw requests for "Around the World in 80 Days" and today "Egyptianball". I downloaded both games tonight from GameTop.
http://www.gametop.com/download-free-games/80-days/
http://www.gametop.com/download-free-games/egyptian-ball/

30% to 40% of the games requested in the comments are available at "www.gametop.com". The games at "Gametop" are always free. I have never been spammed after downloading from "Gametop". At first I ran everything on the website through "Sandboxie" but I quit that practice several months ago after always experiencing clean website visits and downloads.
