I apologize. I feel bad about misleading people in the comment section for a while, now. I feel pretty foolish about not paying attention to the adds on the giveaway page. I mean in not putting 2 and 2 together. Of course, that also means that those who criticize GOTD on their software selection have a better argument.

But, now that I've read the developer statement, I still think it's not exactly what it seems. Meaning no deception, but that it's still a little vague. For example, Online Armor reportedly may have given away 12,000 copies on GOTD recently. Or at least in the thousands. GOTD bought thousands of copies retail? And they;re supposed to get all that back in the occassional hit off the website? Especially considering all us "something for nothing" types? That can't be right. It would mean what the developers were paying for this advertising would be a HUGE outlay. And, really, circular cash flow. From a small developer, with low cash flow, in many cases. I was in broadcasting. I know a little about ad rates. Maybe there guaranteeing to buy 1 copy. Then the cash flow would be going the way it would have to go for the project to survive. And it would make more sense as to why they would be occassionally dealing with small fish.

Unless, they're either paying a HIGHLY discounted bulk rate, or there gambling on, say, six failures a week, hoping to strike it big on the 7th. Like Online Armor. It still makes me wonder about them buying 1,000s of copies, but, theoretically, those methods could work. Still, GOTD would have to be desperate to put up some of these amateurish softwares and then compensating at a retail rate per copy, hoping to get lots of hits later. And why wouldn't the game manufacturers want to use this if they were getting paid retail for every copy? Do sites like Gametop do that? If not, why can't GOTD compete? It seems almost a no lose if the developers are getting retail.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or critical, but I'm still not sure I've got a good picture how this project works. I imagine what I've asked is what most developers ask before they sign the agreement.

Hopefully, it will! But I know what you mean about some sites... many say "download for free!" when all they mean is the demo. Whereas other sites are free but ad-sponsored, like GameHouse and iWin, but you can play some pretty recent games that way. But all the games Whiterabbit, Wizzard, and reverseOrder tell us about are freeware or abandonware, w/out ads.

Hi, Terri... that's odd you're experiencing that. Everything I've ever gotten from GGAOTD has been the full, entire game, no ads. I did experience the 60 min. demo problem a few times, but realized I hadn't activated it right... after that was fixed on my end, it was registered and full. Some sites do offer games with ads and say so, but are you just referring to GGAOTD?

Notblocklox... I didn't realize that! Thanks for the insight.

I really appreciate all the free game offers but I wish the sites would be a little clearer. A lot of them say they are free games and they turn out to be just the 60 min. demo. Others are the full game but with ads. A few are the actual full game with no ads. I'd just like to know before I download something what exactly I'm getting.

GGOTD pays the developer? I thought the developer was paying for the exposure. If not, how does GGOTD make money? Just from search engine hits? I'm not sure of the economics of that explanation, WR. It's a different economic model for the other game sites, since they have revenue generators like memberships. If GGOTD is paying to keep games afloat to attract more attention to GOTD, that seems like a poor strategy, finacially. I must be misunderstaning you.

I'm sure the game giveaway team will be back sometime over the next several weeks. (As the usual vacation season hasn't yet got underway it may even be another three months before we see more games. The last time the game team took a log vacation it didn't end till October. That said, I do think they have found it extremely hard to find new sources of games over the last 18 months, which is why it went from 7 days a week to only 2 days a week. There are a few developers and distributors that the team have used time and time again, but it would mean yet again more repeats; actually, not repeats, rather tripeats and quadpeats, lol. As I said earlier in this thread; the gaming scene has changed dramatically over the past couple of years. The recession has seen some distributors cut their prices and others have their own giveaway schemes, so don't want to contribute. Some of the smaller developers that gave to this project saw many derogatory remarks and few constructive criticisms to they work; which IMO would put off others that may otherwise have given the giveaway a shot. It doesn't help that there is a large number of freeware games, and abandonware games available; many more than there was when this project was started over two and a half years ago.

Each time a game is given away, the game giveaway team has to pay an unspecified sum of money to the developer to pay for giving away a lot of games. There's a couple of thousand downloads for each game so were talking a lot of money. Moneys tight, so fewer people are willing to part with their hard earned cash for a few games. (IMO). It doesn't help that sites like Gametop, FreeGamePick, MyPlayCity, Gamehouse Big Fish Games, Alawar and others are giving away commercial quality games away on a regular basis now. When the giveaway project started there were very few sites giving away free games. I know Gametop was around before the giveaway project, but it had less than half the number of games that it has now.

I guess we will have to wait and see what's going to happen to the games project.

I'll reiterate what I said previously, I do think it would be better if the game giveaway team combined with the giveaway project and returned to its roots. Add in the odd game whenever one became available instead of trying to offer two games every weekend. There just isn't enough developers willing to support the project anymore (well, it seems so to me), so adding a game every week or so that is going to be a quality game instead of a poorly constructed effort, (which we seem to have been getting over the past several months). I'd rather see infrequent, but good quality games than games every weekend that just don't cut it

Thanks for all the warm welcomes to me .. I've actually been coming to GOTD for a few years now but have not gotten active in any of the forums. But I always appreciate the great information passed along by others here who are "in the know". If I happen to come across any free game gems, I too will share them with you all here. My primary dislike at the moment are the "Sponsored" games ... they have way too many commercials during game play, which really wrecks the mood/atmosphere depending on the game. On the one hand, it actually IS a free, full-version game but on the other hand ... it's too intrusive and annoying at times. So ANY game/software links out there that are full version and not full of commercials would be ideal for this game lover! :-)

Hi, Tiffany... welcome to the forums! And yes, gametop is a great site for free games and has been referred to time and again, but a reminder is always welcome! And remember to check out the posts of those who search for games for us on multiple sites: Whiterabbit, Wizzard of Ozz, and reverseOrder, as well as others. They sometimes track down rather unique and obscure games to keep our "free games" folders bulging. But contributions are welcome by all! :)

jenany....I meant to welcome you too in my previous posts and forgot....so.....welcome.

No need to feel stupid, we've all done that or similar and even worse, so don't feel bad. A lot of times the info we need is already here, it's just a matter of finding it. But the folks at this forum are the best there is.....at least the best I've found. I've been to loads of other forums and even when you do "finally" get a reply it's usually not useful anyway. You know how when you need to check something out your first thought is, "Search online"?, well if I have any kind of computer problem, or even other problems sometimes, that I can't resolve my first thought is, "Ask at the GOTD forum". This is one place you get answers.
I did not think to even read the GOTD Team's Blog .. but as I stated earlier, I have only just come to the forums recently. So I'm very glad you pointed that out to me. I now know that the GOTD Team DID address the lack of game offers and I feel rather stupid for not checking their blog to begin with.

Having said that, I *still* intend to check in with the forums here to get alternative game site ideas as well. Thanks to all who participate and take the time and trouble to help the rest of us manage our game "addiction" .. lol.

w13.....No need to apologize, as i said, it was just my 2 cents. Actually I do agree that letting us know what's up is common courtesy .....but isn't that what they did by saying, "Our team has left for vacations season and games will not be provided for a while."? That's kind of open ended so that should be all anyone needs. Just MHO.
Hugs (again)

Hugs back at you, Buckley's Mom. I was debating whether to post in response, I'm sure I'm constantly being seen as trying to have the last word. However, I think I should clarify. Really, what I was trying to say was that GOTD by often remaining silent is sometimes doing itself more harm than good. And sometimes the devoted veterans of this site also do more harm than good.

What I mean is: on the first point - You can't really count volunteers like Bubby and Whiterabbit. They're not GOTD staff. If GOTD staff were to post here once a week saying, "We're still alive" it would very likely be more than they normally participate in this forum, so, respectfully, I hardly think this forum has ever interfered with their lives. After all, one of the principal reasons of this forum was to provide them feedback, but I don't think even Bubby and WR could say for sure that they get significant feedback from it. They certainly don't use it to build up good feelings for their project, which many developers do. They kind of presumptiously leave us to do their dirty work on that score.

On the 2nd point, I can see where criticism can drive away developers. But, I feel, we have to be careful not to jump on newbies for asking what are often reasonable questions. Some ask them rudely, but a lot of that's just frustration. All jumping on them does is drive people away.

In other words, I was gratified by GOTDs two recent blog posts. I think that's the smart way to go. And I think the way GMMan has answered Jenany's question above is also the right way to go about it. Right or wrong, not everybody realizes to check the blog for notices. And many of us have gotten used to GOTD using that blog maybe once a quarter!

Sorry, Buckley'smom. I'm not trying to put extra burden on GOTD. I'm just encouraging courteous use of the line of communications by all parties. Also, I too would miss this sight, but GOTDs not gonna fold the tent over a little, hopefully constructive, criticism. There's no money in that.

@jenany: They did acknowledge there aren't any games these weekends. They said they were on vacation season. See their second latest blog post.

Okay, I really didn't start coming to these forums until recently, when the realization hit me that there would be NO game giveaway today or possibly any other day. While I do appreciate the GAOTD crew immensely, I am in agreement with those others of you who think they should at least acknowledge that they will NOT be having a game giveaway. It's just simple courtesy, that's all. I also want to say that I have found these forums very helpful in finding OTHER sites where we can all download free games or at least play online versions of them. I found MostFun.com because of some people here and have downloaded several full-version games because of that. The ONLY thing I dislike about those games is the constant advertisements you are forced to watch unless you shell out $19.95 per game (not gonna happen here). Otherwise, it's a great deal and I'm sure there are many others. So my suggestion is to keep our own communication flowing freely here on the forums and sharing game sites with one another (as WhiteRabbit has been so faithful about doing). I appreciate everyone's input here -- have a lovely rest of the weekend! :-)

I didn't read every single post here but I gotta say....

Ya know....the staff members here at GOTD DO have lives outside of this forum. (1 cent)

Thanks guys.....I appreciate all you do and I'd be heartbroken if this site were suddenly to vanish. (1 cent)

There's my 2 cents.

Hugs to all
