Maud, I think that is the way it goes; once something is in the, "public domain", as you say, there isn't much a family could do to quel it..
Gamezebo is very good for getting info on games if you want to know if they are worth downloading, etc..
YES I remember the case, and when he was finally caught.
The Bronfman family here (Canadian multimillionaires who owned Seagrams) was tied up in it, which was really disgracefull..
It was a real controversary at the time and even now.
He reminds me of Charles Manson..another dispicable type that I cannot BELIEVE is allowed to speak on TV from time to time...

Hi, Merri - Yes, I wondered too if the family had ok'd The Unicorn Killer, thinking that they would have to. But then I realized that when someone has become a "public figure" - even against their will, as with a crime victim - information that is already public because of the investigation and trial is, I think, considered to be in the public domain. So I don't think anyone basing a "work of art" or even just entertainment on such a case does have to seek permission from the person or their estate.

I hadn't seen any of the discussions on other sites, as I was not familiar with this game until I downloaded it from GameHouse. So thanks for that info; I might check out Gamezebo to see what others had to say. For me, it just didn't feel right.

Since we're discussing the game, The Unicorn Killer, and I had forgotten so much about the case, I decided to Google for info, and found the following - Ira Samuel Einhorn, a.k.a. "The Unicorn Killer".
I found a detailed 8-page account of the years following Holly's murder, starting with the day police found Holly's remains in the Unicorn's apartment, finalizing with his trial and sentencing, here - Ira Einhorn - Counterculture Killer

Final note: When GameHouse offered the game, I considered getting it, but decided against it when I read it is based on a real-life murder case.

hi Maud!
Yes there have been big discussions about this at Gamezbo (and probably other sites)
I guess it is because there are still family members living that makes the issue rather tacky.
BUT as you say, had it been an historical case, most have no compunctions so it is a fine line I guess!

I DO wonder if the family did ok it though..must have...

(PS THEN I thought about people like Ted Bundy etc etc...ugh..not much difference in the cases..)

I only played a little bit of The Unicorn Killer, to see what it was like. Then I uninstalled it. Maybe it's because I, too, remember Ira Einhorn and Holly Maddux, but it struck me as creepy and somewhat inappropriate to base a *game* on a real person's violent death. That started me thinking about whether I would feel the same way if it had been a historical case, and just how far back it would have to be before it wouldn't seem sort of indecent. I guess part of my problem is that Holly Maddux probably has family still living. If one of my loved ones had been murdered, I think it would make me sad to think someone had made a game out of it.

Funny as up to that point, the game was fairly easy; challenging in parts but fun too...
At the last slider I tried everything, used the video that one can get for help, but somehow it just didn't work, and I got rid of it altogether...thanks though!

I just noticed our names rhyme LOL.

Anyway, just my 2 cents but when a game gets so difficult that you are totally stressed out trying to finish it, it's not fun anymore. I've learned to cut my losses and delete the game off my computer. The problem is that I'm running into quite a few like that so it makes me very reluctant to pay money for a game that I may have to abandon quickly. Thank heavens for all these freebies.

Hello Merri and Terri:
Re Ancient Secrets, I could help getting through those last slider puzzles. However, helping is not quite as straight forward as with the Mushrooms. I just checked and you cannot just go back and replay a level. It would require extracting the saved game information that is stored under Gamehouse under your current user in the registry. We could pm the rest with Whiterabbit's help.
I do agree though, that very last slider puzzle was a pain. I had to start over a few times too.
Pura vida, AlexSJ

Terri did you play Ancient secrets?
I got fed up when the last of the slider puzzles eluded me..lol
Plus not having ANY hints just seemed mean...lol!
I haven't tried Treasures of Mystery Island yet(have been enjoying the Dream Vacation solitaire game (it's a keeper!)
But that is weird (and annoying) when the cursor acts slow!
Yes that could be annoying about the hints!

The Treasures of Mystery Island is like the Mortimer Beckett games. You have to find parts of objects and then find the place where they need to be returned. I'm finding the cursor moves really slowly. I also don't like the hints because you have to move around the screen and see where the hint gets brighter. But hey every hint helps.

I decided The History Channel: Lost Worlds wasn't worth the trouble so I uninstalled it today. The interesting thing is that according to my Add/Remove list, it was only 3MB. Since most of the other games are closer to 100MB, I'm thinking it didn't download correctly. Oh well, two new ones to take its place. Hopefully those will download and play with no problem.

I was thinking about this ; I wonder if it is in some way connected to my problem of uninstalling ONE Gamehouse game only to have them ALL disappear.
