Scorched Earth has been updated. The latest version is build 43. The some of the links above are still hosting earlier versions except the first one which has een updated (cnet). you can get the latest version from Gamershell (which may still be giving a spurious WOT rating of RED (don't have it installed at the moment so not sure). You can download the latest version HERE :)

This is still one of my favorite freeware games from over a thousand that we have posted in this project. :)

Hi G@rgoyle, when I edited the post I didn't realize the old links wouldn't work. I really do have a very bad short term memory; though when I checked out the link via the synopsis I did remember what you'd said; but for some reason I thought it was only applicable to the synopsis. (Yeah vey short sighted of me). As for most of the post being Deleted ...... no problems wizzard, luckily I did have the original review. I started to save them from around Xmas onwards, so have re done all the coding again. I noticed you'd redone some of it, but I didn't notice until i'd completely redone it for myself. Took quite some time, so Wednesdays games are a little late.

I'll have the original post back up with the new coding when i've finished it. :)

Uhm ... Whabbit? ... Remember my gripe about the new forum?
... about having to rewrite the synopsis because the embedded links will be messed up when I edit?
When you edited the original post to add the screenshots... that's exactly what happened.
All your old links are dead now :-(
Physiotherapy in 40min so I don't have time to fix them. I'll try to have a look later, unless someone (hopefully) beats me to it.

BTW, it looks great with the all screenshots being the same size. Kudos!

Regards,

The latest version of scorched 3D a remake of scorched Earth has been released. The last time this was posted was 6 months ago prior to the last update, so those who like this game may be interested in re - downloading it. I’ve updated the original post above and included images rather than the links to images and deleted all the old download links.

The file size has increased from 41.5Mb to 47.4Mb.

From the images I’ve seen it looks like the graphics have been updated with better looking explosions, plus the environment looks a little more realistic.

Find the Scorched 3D Wiki HERE

I also discovered that several developers have modded the game, which to the uninitiated basically means they have added new items, changed the fire power or the environments, so the game is usually significantly different to the original. Details of the following mod’s can be found via the link below. Download links will be found either on the mod’s specific page or in the forums. I wasn’t able to find all the mod’s downloads, but then I didn’t look very hard as this is just an update. I welcome anyone else’s input on this subject. :):

You can find the home page via the following link. You’ll find links to several independent reviews as well as more screenshots. I’ve used screenshots from a variety of sources which I’ve listed below:

@Chip:
I have a feeling you already know about it, but here is a website that claims to let you download versions of 'Tank Wars'. It also claims that many of them are still playable, but I will let you decide on that. Sorry, I didnt try them first, but have so many new games (from all the ones offered here) that I am not sure where to start.. also, I just got 'The Orange Box' and 'Unreal Anthology'.. hopefully you see and understand my problem...

http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/games/tankwars.htm

Hope it helps!

I prefer the classic game "Tank Wars" (known as bomb.exe on old dos systems) to Scorched Earth. They were both very similiar but I still liked Tank Wars better. It had funny names for the computers such as Mr. Stupid and Twanger. So I was never really a fan of it competitor which was made around the same time. I'll give it a try but I still wish they made a modern take on Tank Wars. The flash based game "Tanks" is alright but not that great. Who knows, maybe someone did?

Wizzard was unable to post a game for Monday due to being out of town, so he asked me to fill in. I only read his PM just before I was going to go to bed, so the following descriptions and resources have been thrown together very quickly. Thankfully pavid had sent me an Email with details of Scorched 3D, the other two games lead on from checking out some references about scorched earth. It’s a fantastic game for free. The graphics are better than what you see in the low resolution videos I’ve provided. There’s also several mod’s you can download from one of the links provided below, so the game is very expandable. Thanks pavid. Your timely email was very much appreciated. :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scorched Earth (47.4Mb)

Scorched 3D is a modernization of the classic DOS game Scorched Earth "The Mother Of All Games" on which it is based. Scorched 3D incorporates a lively three dimensional landscape that includes animated jets, naval vessels, water, and even birds, in addition to detailed tanks and projectiles. Other enhancements include LAN and internet play and music. Scorched 3D is totally free to play and is available for both Microsoft Windows and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris etc.) operating systems.

Scorched 3D is a simple turn-based artillery game and also a real-time strategy game in which players can counter each others' weapons with other creative accessories, shields and tactics. Learn skill in timing, aiming and judgment, move around on the landscape, or even out-smart your opponent economically.

Learning how to play is easy, just point the turret, adjust power and trajectory, select a weapon - and shoot! Manage your inventory of weapons with the prize money you can win during each round of combat. Learn the basic controls using the tutorial mode, or set up your own game by customizing dozens of economy and environmental conditions to your liking, or simply play online immediately at one of the various public servers.

You can play with up to twenty four other players at a time, mixing computer players with humans on both randomly generated 3D landscapes and user designed maps. Scorched3D comes bundled with Apocalypse mod, which offers enhanced levels of weaponry and additional user designed maps and also offers an active online community of players making models, maps and mod’s for the game.

Scorched 3D is a game based loosely (or actually quite heavily now) on the classic DOS game Scorched Earth “The Mother Of All Games”. Scorched 3D adds amongst other new features a 3D island environment and LAN and Internet play. Scorched 3D is totally free and is available for both Microsoft Windows and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris, etc.) operating systems. You can pick up the game and begin playing very quickly. Then, when/if you are interested, you can poke in the dimmer recesses of the game and get into the strategy (or just ignore it altogether!).

At its lowest level, Scorched 3D is just an artillery game with two+ tanks taking turns to destroy opponents in an arena. Choose the angle, direction and power of each shot, launch your weapon, and try to blow up other tanks. That’s basically it. But Scorched 3D can be a lot more complex than that, if you want it to be. You can earn money from successful battles and use it to invest in additional weapons and accessories. You can play with up to twenty four other players at a time, mixing computer players with humans. There’s a variety of changing environmental conditions and terrains to be dealt with. After the end of each round (which ends when everybody dies or there’s only one person left), you get to buy stuff using the prize money you won from previous levels.

Get the latest version (v42.1) of Scorched 3D HERE] There’s versions for windows, Mac and several flavors of Linux

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scorched3D is based on the DOS original [b]Scorched Earth[/b and can be downloaded from Get the original Scorched Earth HERE. Though I think a game called howitzer was the first to use this concept. That is also available for free, but I’ll post that at a later date. :)

[b]Dumbow & Cool 1.3

A nice 3D platform game, where you control two characters, Dumbow can swim and Cool can skate... You must use them properly to complete the levels of the game (20). Within each level you must free prisoners and collect coins. A split-screen cooperative mode is also available.

Terrafire:

This is a really good game. You have to explore the underground base to recover nuclear pods, destroying the base defenses and avoiding all the obstacles on you way. Nice game play and good gravitational physics. The game includes 5 worlds, 27 levels and many bonuses. Graphics 3D rendered, but low resolution; also you get some reasonable sound effects for an old game.

Award-winning arcade game featuring rendered 3D graphics, realistic gravitational physics and 360 degree parallax scrolling.

Blast your ship through heavily defended underground caverns, past wind tunnels, fire-walls and subterranean lakes. Recover stolen nuclear pods using your ship's tractor beam, then carry them back to the planet surface and beyond into hyperspace.

TerraFire features 27 missions (including 6 hyperspace levels), spread across 5 unique worlds, each with unique graphics

System Requirements:

Windows 98, 2000, Me or XP. (Though it may not play on newer systems so try using DOSBox if it won’t work.
32 MB RAM.
