Alrighty, I am not saying anyone is right or wrong, but if I am reading this right.. then I wish I would have seen it before. I made the self extracting exe backup thing-a-ma-bob (sorry without it to look at I cant give you anything exact). I put it on a USB drive and a CD for the 'just incase' time. Anyway, to make it short. I had the big crash and had to reformat and reinstall (back to Windows XP). Although I checked after doing the back up (and they showed on there) nothing was there when I tried to recover from it. Even now, after getting everything back up and running; I downloaded the trial version of it just to see if it could see it. Nope.. it is gone like it never happened.

Granted, I am not the most computer literate person around, but I know enough that I get by and help others. Basically, I dont know if I would let myself be dependent on this again. I will be sure to have my drivers backed up in other ways from now on. (Though unless it is given away again here.. I wont have it.)

Just my 2cents,

I missed your last post Lakjin.
I'm seriously wondering if the developer somehow missed this issue as (g@rgoyle/Lan pointed out earlier) one of the programmes key features is to be able to
"Clone all drivers to an auto-setup package (.EXE), so you can restore drivers without installing Driver Magician."
It does not state ALL drivers though...

and ending with that I'm now going to sleep :-)

Hi Lakjin,
I didn't change the post or refer to the self extractor but definitely proved my lack of journalistic reporting by incorrectly referring to the auto-setup package/DriverAutoSetup.exe as "driver restoration exe" and "saved driver executable" in my top post.

Then in my second post while trying to clear up confusion, I just added to it by writing "If the programme is not registered you cannot reinstall all of your drivers, even if you made an auto-setup package (exe)". It should have said "If the programme is not registered you cannot reinstall all of your drivers from an auto-setup package (exe)".

Good job I'm not writing about something life threatening - someone might get hurt!

Hi Robert - I'm good thanks - hope you are too.

Yes you're right, the previous giveaway 3.26 is the same, I was only reminded because of the updated giveaway and thought I'd post about it. People seem to be confused between the self extracting archive (MyDrivers.exe) and the DriverAutoSetup.exe (due to my poorly written explanation?).

LOL

Hi again Damian,
How are you doing?

Thanks for letting us know.
And yes you are right about all this!
I noticed this in version 3.26.
Maybe you noticed as well when doing a clean install (in some cases) you still need the driver cds to install some other additional things to get you started again.
So unless you have a (bought)registration key you're far better off making a mydrivers.exe.And launch the add new hardware wizard afterwards.
You might as well zip your system's drivers folder.LOL.
FOTS.

Take care.

~Robert~

Rezidue,

Thanks for posting this!
You're right, the auto-setup file doesn't work without the registration details! I just got the same pop-up window after deleting the serial number from the registry.

The key features (just above the user rating) mention:
Clone all drivers to an auto-setup package (.EXE), so you can restore drivers without installing Driver Magician.

The irony is that you don't need to have the program installed, but you do need the registration details to access the auto-setup file! IMO the offer should mention this coz most people won't find out that their backup is useless until it's too late.
Thumbs down for Driver Magician!

Thanks Rezidue!

Regards,
Lan

@ Ashraf,
Please don't tell someone "you are wrong" when you've not tested all the options. It's rude and you're the one who's wrong here.

Lakjin - sorry for the confusion, I'm referring to the auto-setup.exe ONLY not to a regular compressed backup. Create your DriverAutoSetup.exe then delete the Driver Magician reg key. Then run the DriverAutoSetup.exe. A window pops up asking for registration name and serial in order to install all of the backed up drivers, otherwise it will only reinstall the video adapter and network adapter drivers.

Yeah, I thought he was saying that packages made on the trial version are partially disabled. Maybe they were on older trial versions, but I missed where he was talking about losing you're registration on a registered version. I think you proved it worked last time this was given away, not to mention this time. It's interesting he would say some drivers would install and some wouldn't. Maybe that was a feature on some old trial version, and he thought it applied to a registered full version. Or maybe it's an idiosyncracy of the beta. In any case, glad there's no real issue.

watcher13,
You misunderstand what rezidue is saying. He is saying that after you register DM and create EXE backups, if you try to use the EXE backups on a computer w/o DM, it won't work.

rezidue,
Someone posted this same thing at my blog. That being said, you are wrong. I tried the self extractor EXE (was not interested in a system restore so didn't bother w/ the auto-setup but I assume it is the same). It extracts fine on a computer without DM.

good, Clone all drivers to an auto-setup package (.EXE), so you can restore drivers without installing Driver Magician.Back up device drivers of your computer in four modes.
I made 5 backup's sound exe & folder, non windows drivers exe & folder, and all Drivers to a folder to be safe. (PS) it did not say need registered code to go to new.

rezidue, well the truth is we don't usually think about that since the intention, obviously, is always to get the program registered properly. But, you make a good point. For those who have gotten confused or had some other problem they could accidentally end up with an incomplete auto execute. Have you posted this over in the comments? I didn't see it, but maybe it's awaiting moderation. Obviously,
that's where the message would do the most good.

just to clarify my post

If the programme is not registered you cannot reinstall all of your drivers, even if you made an auto-setup package (exe). Without registration it will only reinstall the video adapter and network adapter drivers (it asks for name and serial # for full driver restore).

Others are posting to the contrary, unfortunately this is incorrect.

Hope that makes more sense.

Some may find this IMPORTANT.

The exe part sounds good BUT…

If the programme is no longer registered and you execute the driver restoration exe that you created it asks for your registration name and code to restore all backed up drivers, without the registration info only the video adapter and network adapter drivers will be installed, so after a reformat (which will wipe out your registration for this programme) that’s what you’re left with, unless you know how to save the registration key in the registry to re-register prior to running the saved driver executable.
