Awesome, thanks mikerb... no wonder he only has "one button" for control. But it's not easy getting him to go where you want him to.

Thanks for sharing memories, Wrabbit... very enjoyable to read. And you're right... if you're denied something you think you can't live without, you soon find something to take its place. And you were lucky it was another computer, albeit a more ancient one. I bet it WAS fun to get back to the nitty-gritty. But oh the horror of losing electricity in one's house... you realize one by one the things you rely on. Number one being... TA-DA... the computer! For me, at least... for my husband it's the TV. And even a black and white needs electricity... how spoiled we are, eh? To think of the children that play with sticks and balls, and their parents do what they have to do while the Sun is still high, or before it sets.

The first computer I laid hands on was I'm assuming the first Apple MacIntosh. I drew graphics, pen and ink on the board for several years when younger, and when we got access to one I volunteered to take it home and learn to transfer doing graphics to this little computer. (little, but bulky.) Well. Did I end up crying that weekend? Yes. Lol! Were there any instructions back then? Of course not. How to even draw a box. Hmmm. Well besides typing, if I click this thing here and place the cursor... whoa! I think I'm drawing a line. Honestly, that's the way the computer graphics field started. Trial and error, passing info along as we figured it out. And the first simple silly game that I came upon? Shear enjoyment, despite the simplicity. Uh-oh... now I'M rambling... but when I think of what we can do today graphically, in design and in gaming, talk about giant steps. Or trips to other planets. So fast it can't keep up with itself.

Cheers,
midori :)

Which is exactly why it'll be worth putting in the synopsis.......

I remember visiting my wifes parents a few years into our relationship for a Christmas stay over. We used to go for the whole week. I'd not bothered bringing my own computer (Michelle strictly forbade it, lol), however her parents had an old sharps 64 (basically equivalent to a Commadore 64). After the initial shock of very basic graphics I started to really enjoy myself playing the various games they had. The same goes for TV. We borrowed her parents caravan one year and spent a few weeks in the English Lake District, using a battery operated black and white TV. Again, after the initial shock of having to watch everything in B&W we soon got used to it. ('scuze the ramblings, lol).........

Ones man/woman's rubbish is anothers gold. :)

Personally I think most games deserve some credit. There haven't been many games I've tried over the years since computer games have been available that I would say were totally rubbish. Even the simplest games have some merit. One of my first computers was an Einstein 84 (slightly better than a Commadore, but had fewer games available) which was the first computer to introduce the smaller encased floppy discs, though they were 3 inches as opposed to what became the standard 3.5 inches. The first two games I ever bought, which cost me the equivalent of $28 each were a text based adventure called The Island of Artuan. (Idea for another thread there) and a simple chess game.

Gosh knows I've done the same plenty of times, Wrabbit... and let's face it, sometimes you have a way of overwhelming a previously-working link! So if they don't work, someone usually posts an alternate... a good-hearted soul like mikerb.
Oh, and there's really no need to put SkyPuppy on your famous list... I just mentioned it because it was cute, but not sure that I'd actually recommend it. But when you see something like that you just HAVE to download it. :)

lol, yep that's what I'd done. The end of the url ends in two l's which look remarkably like ones not ell's. I'd cut off one of the l's then substituted a 1. When you're tired it's sometimes hard to see the difference between a l and 1...hardly any (that's when you're typing them out. Once it's been posted theres an obvious difference. Next time you type something try typing a lower case L and a 1.

The link is now working.... Thanks for the extra one mikerb

lol, no prob's midori; these game threads are about games so it really doesn't matter. Just so long as G@rgoyle picks up on the game and puts it in the synopsis. (If he misses it I'll do it myself when I have the time). :)

Sorry about the link. It was working the other day though. I'll check the coding as sometimes a letter gets clipped off the end when I'm copying the link into the appropriate code.

Lol! While downloading from your link, mikerb, I naturally glanced at the other games and downloaded one called Skypuppy which is a hoot! No instructions, but by hitting keys found that if you press the spacebar the dogs ears flap (faster if you keep tapping the spacebar) and the dog takes off. There's bones in them thar skies. Not sure how else you can control him yet. It's far from a space shooter (but too cute not to mention), so sorry to go off track, Wrabbit! Skypuppy! x-D

Hello and thanks, Wrabbit! I've been in the mood for these and was just playing some old ones last night. And yes, I've been called a "space case." %-D (Ground Control to midori...)
Had a problem with the Laser Age Gold link (said it couldn't find server) but I'll check again later, perhaps it's busy.

Okay, it’s space day today :) …..Again! You’ll find three excellent space shooters below ranging from a Galaxian clone to asteroids and a space adventure RPG. Today’s post is rather rushed as I’m still trying to fix one of my computers. I hope you don’t mind more space orientated games, of which I seem to have posted an inordinate amount recently.

Exotic Armada 2: (10Mb)

OVERVIEW

This game offers some fast and furious spacecraft melee action for 1-4 players (on the same computer). The game isn't even meant to be innovative, rather just offering pure shooting fun in the spirit of games such as Star Control. Build an armada in the ship shop, then go battle it out in a real time combat arena. The teams are fully customizable, even allowing mixed human / AI teams.

The game sports over 40(!) different ships with unique armament and stats, although only 10 are initially available. To gain access to the rest of the ships, you need to win challenges. Every time you win a challenge, you gain access to one new ship.

If you're a fan of retro-style spacecraft melee action, you should definitely try this game.

How to play:

The game’s really pretty simple to learn, but here’s some basic instructions to get you started.

In menus, use the mouse to move around. You can set the ingame controls from the options menu.

To start a game, click the new game button and select a game mode. In Challenge mode most of the settings are automatical, while melee is more customisable.

Each time you win a challenge, you gain access to one new ship. That ship becomes available in both challenge and melee modes. After you’ve gained all the bonus ships, there isn’t much point in playing the challenge mode any more.

If you find the challenge mode too hard and just want to get all the ships instantly, read the next section (cheats). However, going through the challenges is good practice and is usually the recommended way to go.

In the melee mode, it is possible to play with 4 human players. You can also substitute some players with AI ones if you want. Any combination is possible.

In the ship-shop you can either use the mouse or the following keys:

-Arrows: Move slider left or right
-Enter: Buy a ship
-Backspace: Cancel the last purchase
-Space: Accept armada
-Escape: Abort game

When you get into the game, the first thing you need to do is choose one of your ships and warp it in the battlefield. You move from a choice to another by using the “left” and “right” keys of your player. Pick a ship by pressing the “primary fire” key. Note that there is a timer of 10 seconds during which you have to choose a ship.

You may find that some of the ships turn too fast, making aiming a bit difficult. This is what the “sniping mode” key is for. When you turn on the “sniping mode”, your ship will turn slowly, whether or not the normal turning rate is fast. You can disable the sniping mode with another press of the same key.

It is not possible to damage or harm a teammate. Your shots will simply fly through them. Positive effects, such as energy rechargers, WILL effect your teammates in addition to you.

Cheats:

Some people may find it tedious to have to play all the way through the challenge mode to gain access to all of the different ships. For this reason, there is a cheat mode included that allows you to immediately get all the ships. To activate it:

-Go to main menu
-Look around the metal background and you will find a small red button
-Left-click the button
-Cheat mode should now be active (indicated by a flashing text in the upper left corner)
-After you quit and reload the game, the ship progress returns where it was before activating the cheat mode

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Display: 1280 x 1024 capable
CPU: 300 MHz

Laser Age Gold:

LaserAge is a retro game similar to Galaxian and Galaga clones. This shooter features power-ups and is highly detailed, combining nostalgia with 24-bit color. Four levels have 100 waves of ships. Destroy 15 enemies with 13 power-ups. You can play in windowed and full-screen modes; then show off your skills to the world with Web-based high scores. Your ship can be controlled with the mouse, which comes in handy when you're trying to dodge enemy fire. The Gold version features a new interface and a massive list of bug fixes.

The only down side is that you can only play it in windowed mode (as far as I’ve been able to see)

Download Laser Age Gold HERE

Epochstar:

You can find details of all the species and ships that are found in the Epoch world by following the download link below. You’ll find a tabbed database covering most aspects of the game as well as a comprehensive storyline and forums where you can find or pose answers to queries about the game. I’d forgotten I had this game.

Play the game Asteroids like never before. Asteroid - ES utilizes the Epoch Star game engine for updated graphics and features, adding to the classic game play of the original arcade version. Gain levels, acquire power-ups, and beat your high score! Asteroid - ES supports both keyboard and joystick interfaces
Enter a universe of epic space adventure! Master combat with hundreds of ships and thousands of weapons. You will clash with dark and mysterious enemy races. Engage in missions to help a crumbling republic, and restore peace to the Galaxy.

Twelve distinct alien species live within the Epoch Star Universe. Each race represents a unique civilization and timeline that dates back to the very foundation of recorded history: the Ancient Ignus War. Some are friendly to the Galactic Union, while others have ravaged the frontiers of the crumbling empire for centuries.
