Hi Wizzard,

I'm glad to hear that you managed to get the game in a playable state in the end.

Regarding CpuLower, I in my experience this sort of utility does work (unlike memory/cpu speed/internet speed boosters, and the like) but DosBox may work at a "low level" in the system, thereby effectively by-passing this utility.
I'm happy to be of help, as I know you are.

Regards,

I appreciate the research you did on this ornithos, but I guess the last time I tried this game I wasn't as well versed on framerate as I am now. I had to take my machine's framerate through dosbox all the way down to 200 before the game would play at normal speed. I guess I just never went that far down. However, I did download the last option and tried it and didn't find a single difference so I guess it's about as good as memory boosters. Thanks again though.

Regards,

Hi Wizzard,

In the distant and murky past of my DOS days I used to use a separate utility (can't for the life of me remember what it was called) that allowed me to reduce my cpu speed incrementally.

As you have pointed out, DosBox already has such a facility (i.e. to reduce cpu cycles) built in. It appears that the range that DosBox offers one for reducing cpu cycles is too limited.

What I would suggest is to try and run a separate cpu speed (reduction) utility from "within" windows first and then further reduce the framerate once you've started DosBox.
As I'm not sure how DosBox works (as a process in Windows or at a lower level?), I'm not completely sure if this will work; DosBox may by-pass it. However, in my opinion it's worth a try.
I've done some Googling and I've come across a few possibles:

1. TurboCPU, now at version 2 - although every hit suggests that this can reduce cpu speed, from reading how it does this (by changing process priorities) I'm not sure if it will do the job. This sadly is shareware, and they require a hefty $20 for it.
2. CPU Speed Pro apparently is able to reduce speed though I can't find any corroboration on the developers site (or much else, for that matter). Freeware.
3. I've found a utility called CpuLower which seems to do what you need. You can find it at http://majorgeeks.com/CpuLower_d424.html . Also Freeware.

Family responsibilities prevent me from researching this more thoroughly, but perhaps you're able to pursue this option. Let me know how you get on, ok?

Regards,

Ornithos

You're very welcome graylox. Let us all know how it goes when you finally get it fired up. You're keeping me in pins and needles lol. The only thing that I don't like about dosbox is that sometimes the framerate is too fast for some of the older games. One of my all time favorites is bouncing babies, but I can't play it because the babies come flying out too quickly. No matter how much I reduce the framerate, it doesn't go normal speed. Just something you might want to keep in mind.

LOL, just keep 'm coming BunnyMan!

These marble games will get their place in the synopsis soon coz I'm updating the list every weekend. I'm also still digging through the older threads to add all the games that weren't part of the weekdays' project. Not just good news though... a few weeks ago I lost my main computer when a short-circuit set the wiring on fire and I may have to start from scratch with the browser games synopsis 8-(
I'm waiting for a new set of hard disks to clone the 'old' ones (4x1tera) before I try to salvage the data. I'm feeling pretty stupid about backing up my Linux files to another internal hard disk while I've got a 2tera NAS box. Oh well, never too old to learn *sigh*

The amount of marble games that's available would suggest that they are quite popular... could that be an indication that some peeps are missing a few marbles ???
Juz kiddin'... glad you're all enjoying yourselves ;-)

Take Care!

Regards,

Hi Wizzard,

It was actually Graylox who had the original question; I've been "DosBoxing" for quite some time now. I just hadn't tried running any of my old CD-ROMs on DosBox yet, as I now have hundreds of old DOS games squatting on my HDD. Who knows, I may get around to it this decennium (darn, that's not leaving me much time <)

Hi Wizzard,

Thanks for posting this link; it's a very useful tutorial that makes it clear to the novice DosBox user what he/she needs to do.
I just read it through and learned something new myself (being an "old" DOS user): the Label command. Thanks!
I only knew about Label in the DOS context, as in the command you'd use to name your floppies and (hard)drives. This looks like it will boost CD-ROM compatibility.

Graylox, there is a tutorial here on how to mount your cd drive.

http://digiex.net/guides-tutorials/232-install-operating-dosbox-windows-guide-setting-up-mounting-cd-help.html

If you are going to be playing games mostly from cd's I would suggest following this tutorial rather than the one I posted. If you do mine, you will have to exit Norton Commander every time and mount the cd drive and go through all of that. I just think it would be easier to follow this tutorial if you intend on doing cd gaming more so than hard drive.

I was going to post several marble games last week, but didn’t, partly because of the one that was posted by devildog called Blockball Evolution. Seeing as we’ve got a marble rolling game today I thought I’d add to the pot and post links to the ones I was going to post. You can get quite a few from Caiman, some of which are really good. I won’t post links to individual games, just the pages that you can get them from. The games include The little Eggy that Could, I’ve got some balls, Gyroball, Sky Roads, Marble Arena (one of the first games I posted in this project), Skyblazer, Blazing Trails, Sky Cars, Fun Ski (Geyser System), Orbit hopper, Big & Small vs The Grand Machines, Marble Run, Race Walking 3D, Ilogic roads and Marblex, which you can get HERE

and

Rollminator, Rolling Fury, Skyroads Xmas, Marble Insanity, Voidrunner, Marble & Madness, Bomb Roller, Osw-Ballz 2, Blast Geyser System, Osw-Ballz, and Babal 3D which you can get HERE

Again, I hope you don’t mind me adding theses extra’s to your thread Wizzard. I’ve been wanting to post them for ages, but whenever it’s been my turn something else has cropped up, or I’ve had a reason not to post them. I had several of the games above in my ready to post folder for quite some time so am glad to have cleared the folder somewhat.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also I thought it would be appropriate to link to the marble rolling/skyroads clone that devildog posted a couple of weeks ago called Blockball Evolution, which I think is one of the best free marble rolling games around at the moment and you can find the thread HERE

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you really like skyroads/marble rolling games I highly recommend the following commercial games. They are worth getting if you like this genre:

Marble Blast Gold, a brilliant marble rolling game that was released through Garage games several years ago. The game is timeless so doesn’t look dated as some older arcade games do. I bought this one for my son about four years ago and he played it regularly for a couple of years and still jumps in occasionally. You can get an editor to create your own levels and there are loads of custom made levels available to add to the ones you get with the game. To progress from one level to the next you have to complete the previous level, however by clicking on the bottom right of the screen you can unlock each level and proceed to the next. There are lots of extra files you can download that change the backgrounds or the ball skin. You’ll find details of all the custom content via Garage Games forums.

Another excellent skyroads/marble rolling game that you can buy is called Slick Ball. It’s harder than Marble Blast Gold and doesn’t have the custom content, but it’s still worth buying in my opinion if you love this genre. It’s not as colorful as Marble Blast Gold, looking rather somber and dark. You can get demo’s of both games if you wish:

A more recent sky roads/marble rolling game called Switchball is my favorite of the moment. It’s go everything the others have plus the graphics are crisp & gorgeous. You can get it from fileplanets Direct to Drive, or from the developer, though I’d recommend getting it from fileplanet as the developers download and registration process is quite complicated (not that fileplanets DtoD isn’t):

There's a few more commercial games called Roads of Fantasy and two Hamsterball games, none retail for more than $10 and are available via the links below; though I think many of the free games linked to above are better than these games.

Finally, for those who have Half Life 2, you can get a fantastic mod called Dreamball that gives you a skyroads/marble rolling game not dissimilar to Switchball. You can get it from fileplanet:

Hi Graylox,

Although I've not tried it myself - having only run games stored on my HDD so far - I'm sure that you can just mount your D drive (if that is the letter asigned to your optical drive) and the directory that contains the Install/Setup file for your game(s) (if this isn't in the root of the disc).

After installing it, you should be able to run the game after you mount the "installed" directory that contains the game's executable file.

I hope this helps, Alles Gute,

Ornithos

Found this link on the author's page, I think that is something to look at for you gaming-guys: :)

Killer List of Videogames

Thanks for the game, have often played it and I think in a very deep and very dark corner I'll find a CD or disk.
Question: I have some old CDs with old games, can I play them with the Dos-Box? That would be a reason to finally deal with it.

Today’s game is called Rolling Madness 3D. The game is a remake of the old arcade classic marble madness in which you have to maneuver the marble to the goal in the quickest time possible. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. You will have to overcome various enemies and obstacles along the way, not to mention gravity itself. This is an excellent remake of a great game. There are only 6 levels, but I feel this is a necessity for everyone’s WR folder. Controls are easy, move your mouse. Graphics and sound are excellent. I give this game a much deserved 10/10. The first download link is the author’s page. The download was excruciatingly slow, so I’m going to assume that it will be even worse now that this game has been posted to the forum project. However, their site has many more screens if anyone is interested. At 16.8mb, at least download this gem and try it.
