Remember Home of the Underdogs? It's been dead and back from the dead about as many times as Jean Grey (X-Men readers will know what I'm talking about). Seems that record it's going to be broken again.

After the site's - seemingly final - closure not long ago it's owner made a copy of HotU's database publicly available.

Guess what happened next? There turned out to be a group of enthusiasts sufficiently dedicated - or perhaps crazy, maybe both - to try and rebuild the site.

Great looking wizz!
LOL, only checked the other day. :)

HotU is back! If you don't believe me, check out the site http://www.hotud.org I guess the owner made the site's database public and some loyal fans are now maintaining upkeep on the site. I hope they can make it okay.

Darn it, that is a great shame. Still, there are plenty of other abandonware sites - maybe not as extensive, but between them most games can be found. Just so long as they don't go the way of a couple of abandonware sites that actually charge you to download the free games or ask you to take surveys etc.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll have to re-check some of the future games I have planned that I know I downloaded from HOTU. I had noticed that lot of links were no longer working but assumed it was because the games had been shown not to be abandonware. I never bothered to follow up the assumption.

Love it or hate it, HotU was one of the (if not THE) most well-known Abandonware websites on the net. If you were looking for abandonware - HOTU had it. If you were looking for a massive archive with literally thousands of games to download and reviews to go with them - HotU had it. If you were looking for a rare or obscure title not found anywhere else on the internet... chances were HotU had it.

But over last three years HotU was dying a slow death, with no updates and the once-active community dwindling down until all that was left of it was the core of most die-hard supporters. In September last year the site went offline, only to return far diminished soon after, with none of the downloads or screenshots working anymore - reducing the once glorious abandonware archive to but a shadow of its former self.

A week ago, it went down again - and seems this time it's for good: according to a message posted by the site's owner on Twitter, it's webhost closed down due to bankrupcy, thus leaving HotU with no place to call home.

It's sad to see such an end for what was the best Abandonware site of - quite literally - the last decade. -Abandonia

After a brief stint of being offline during the month of September 2008, HOTU seemingly returned late in the month, however, the games once offered are no longer available and attempts to download a game return an error message: "I'm sorry, but the file doesn't exist." -Wikipedia

On February 13th, 2009 Home of the Underdogs went offline. According to a message posted on Twitter by the site's owner[1]

, this was because of the webhost's bankruptcy. -Wikipedia

http://twitter.com/Fringer/statuses/1194153273 -Twitter message by owner

Home of the Underdogs (often called HotU) was an abandonware archive[1] founded by Sarinee Achavanuntakul in September 1998, and grew to be one of the most significant abandonware websites on the Internet.
