Thanks Wizzard,

I guess I won't hold my breath for now (exhales gratefully ...). Please give us a shout (as we say here) if you hear any rumours about an imminent release. Thanks.

I'd also been looking at the various anthologies on Steam. I already have Half-Life, Blue Shift and Team Fortress on disc, otherwise I'd have bought the set.
However, I'm thinking about getting Half-Life: Source, the reworked version, to complement my collection.

The HL2 community has been anxiously waiting for this game for, well over a year at least. So I wouldn't get too excited about it yet lol. However, keep in mind that it took 6 years to develop HL2 after HL1. OBM looks incredible with all the progress they've made so far, but they've still probably got quite a bit of work ahead of them to truly re-create Opposing Force. Now, if only someone would re-create Blue Shift I would be in heaven lol.

BTW, you can purchase Opposing Force from Steam for $5, or you can buy the whole HL1 anthology for $15 and get Team Fortress, Half-Life, and Blue Shift as well.

Hi Wizzard,

Thanks for the heads-up on the OBM mod; OBM is the only expansion that I never bought for my original Half Life game. If this runs on the HL2 engine, it should be great to look at, as well as being great to play.

Thanks,

Hi Pavid,

I'm happy to help. Let me know how you get on, ok?

I have put the Steam site on my list of sites to check out regularly, as they have some high quality games.

IMO, Half-Life 2 is the best PC game made so far. It is in no way open-ended, but I have played through it 3 times completely and working on my 4th. There are so many different mods for half-life, it is unbelievable. Here are just a few of the mod's either available now or being worked on. Please watch for Operation Black Mesa. This is by far the most hyped mod for Half-Life 2. OBM is a remake of Opposing Force, the Half-Life 1 expansion.

http://www.hl2mods.co.uk/find.php?genreString=&modeString=&downloadString=&

Yeah, thanks for the instuctions. That's good news :) You'll love the orange box. I think it's for sale for 15 pounds at Game UK (or cheaper online) at the moment. The Orange Box is a rel bargain with five different games. And once you've got them set up on Steam, you can download some great mods. I got one HL2 mod called Dreamball(via PC Gamer) that changes it into a Marble rolling mod that looks nearly as good as Switchball.

Hey there, Wrabbit... thanks much for turning us on to Steam and the offer! I was really impressed after checking it out, and especially with the game package you mentioned... so I am now a proud owner of those games! $10? Had to jump on it before the weekend is over. And no, I haven't actually "bought" anything in a long, long time. But hey, one of my clients' checks just came through and I had to buy myself a lil treat, what? Lol. Heaven knows the rest is going on bills, bills, bills. *J:-D

Hi Pavid (and Whiterabbit),

I (initially) also heard that the games one previously had bought/downloaded from Steam - or on retail disk for that matter - required a connection to the Steam server before being given the "go-ahead". I make a (perhaps futile) point of always boycotting games and companies that rely on this kind of method of copy protection.

However, it is now my understanding that this is no longer the case. That is to say, I've copied the following from Steam's Support pages that seems to indicate this:

What is Offline Mode?
Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time you wish to play - this is particularly useful if you do not plan on playing over the internet and would prefer not to download new updates for your single-player games.

Please note that you must connect to the Steam Network and test each of the games you would like to use in Offline Mode at least once to set up your account and configure Offline Mode on your machine. (Ornithos: not unreasonable)

Using Offline Mode
Please follow the instructions below to configure Offline Mode on your machine:

1. Start Steam online - make sure the Remember my password box on the login window is checked
2. Verify that all game files are completely updated - you can see the update status for a game under the My Games tab (when the game shows as 100% - Ready it is ready to be played in Offline Mode)
3. Launch the game you would like to play offline to verify that there are no further updates to download - shut down the game and return to Steam once you have confirmed that the game can be played
4. Go to Settings to ensure the Do not store account information on this computer option is not selected
5. From the main Steam window, go to File and select Go Offline
6. Click OK to restart Steam in Offline Mode

Note that I believe you need to install something called the Steam client in order for this to work. I read somewhere recently that at one time this was not free software. However, I just checked this and it appears to be a free download.

Encouraged by my recent investigations into these matters, I have since then proceeded to order the retail boxed version of the Half-Life 2 games collection called The Orange Box. I can't wait to try them out, having long been a big fan of the original Half-Life.

Good luck

Ornithos

I too wasn't thrilled about Steam until I managed to crash my computer with no backup available. Once I got things backup and running I was able to once more download the games I had purchased through Steam. If you purchase a new computer you can do the same thing. Once you buy a game, it's yours forever. I can still access games that I purchased years ago.

If I recall correctly, once you confirm ownership of a game with Steam, you can disconnect from the net and continue to play your game. I haven't used Steam in a while, so I'm not totally sure about that.

In my opinion Yes. It's the best Tower Defense game I've played to date.

As for Steam. I'd tried to avoid downloading it for a long time now because I'm not happy about game managers in general. I don't like not having a free standing game that I can play on any of my computers without having to be connected to the internet. That's why I've avoided installing it for so long. Buying Galactic Bowling (which is a fun bowling version) and Defense Grid: The Awakening, which I've already said is the best tower defense around (though I do like Immortal defense), plus it’s rendered beautifully and the weapons and upgrades are excellent has forced me to use Steam and now I’m quite happy to keep a limited number of games on it. What I like about it is that I can download and start to play any of my games on any computer I want to provided I’m logged in to Steam.

I finally got around to playing my Half Life two which also requires steam. I have the DVD’s for all the Half Life 2 games plus Portal, but I can also download them from Steam if I wish, which is great.

I will be looking for more amazing bargains in the coming weeks. I’ve just downloaded the Empire Total War demo which I’ve had on pre-order for several months. It’s out in just over a week, and Tom Clancy’s End Game is finally being released in four days time (I’ve had that on pre-order for a year. It was supposed to have been released last March, but has been delayed several times). I’m even considering buying that Hawx’s game as well. The graphics look amazing.

Steam has great deals like this every weekend folks. I bought Portal for just a few dollars once. I really like Steam, but my one gripe is at how long it takes to download games. Where as it may only take 20 minutes to download from a disk, Steam may take several hours to download the game. If you're unsure of using Steam, I would definitely bookmark the homepage and watch for the new weekend deal. Maybe something will come up that will finally coax you into trying the "next big thing," Steam.

Steam have got a brilliant offer on for this weekend only. You can get the following 'gorgeously constructed' bundle of games (5)for less than $10. The only prerequisite is you need a steam account which is free to set up and run. I'd avoided having a Steam account until buying a couple of downloadable games recently (Galactic Bowling and Defense Grid: The Awakening) forced my hand after discovering that the only way I could play them (after I'd purchased them) was via Steam. I wasn’t pleased; but now the dust has settled I’ve grown accustomed to having Steam load up and have been surprised at the bargains that can be had. Earlier this morning I was checking the steam Store which is accessible from the steam games manager and came across the offer I mention above. The games you get are all Indie games, and include some brilliant physics based games. I’ve not got time to write any details, but have posted you tube videos for each of the games you get in the bundle. It’s probably the best deal I’ve bought in ages. All the games are current releases and all have something original in their game play. I posted a free version of Gravitron elsewhere in thee forums, but it’s not as good as the commercial version.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiwinia:

I wasn’t sure about this until I started playing it. It’s almost like a tower defense game, but with much more. You control lots of little 2D soldiers in a 3D environment. I’m definitely going to buy Darwinia the other game in this series. 9 out of 10

Watch Video

Eets:

A lemmings like game with levels editor. My daughter was really taken with this game. I’d give it 7 out of 10 but my daughter says 10 out of 10, lol

Watch Video

Gravitron 2:
I’ve already bought this a few weeks ago, but the bundle was such a bargain I didn’t mind paying for it again. It’s a gorgeous space shooter based on gravity. The game play is quite hard, but very rewarding. 8 out of 10

Watch Video

Trials 2 Second Edition

This is a rag doll style game where you have to ride a trials bike over obstacles. The game physics are excellent. You play singleplayer, but your times to complete each level are posted on the internet. I’m not one for internet play anymore, but I was hooked on this as soon as I started to play it. Brilliant. 8 out of 10

Watch Video

I-Fluid

This is an amazing ball rolling game, where the ball is actually a drop of water. You have to be careful where you roll the drop otherwise it will be soaked up. The game physics are amazing, with all objects movable (well all the small ones). The graphics are superb and game play 9 out of 10

Watch Video

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only way to access this bundle deal is to download the steam client and sign up for a free account. Follow the link below to find out about steam and download the client. They accept PayPal. I had my games within minutes of seeing the deal early this morning. :)

Follow this link to Steam
